KTT 112: Inorganic Chemistry I
Semester II 2022/2023
Assignment 4: Chapter 7 and 8
Section A
Chapter 7
1. Rank these photons in terms of decreasing energy:
(a) IR (v = 6.5 x 1013 s-1); (b) microwave (v = 9.8 x 1011 s-1); (c) UV (v = 8.0 x 1015 s-1)
2. The electron in a ground-state H atom absorbs a photon of wavelength 97.20 nm. To
what energy level does it move?
3. A ground-state H atom absorbs a photon of wavelength 94.91 nm, and its electron
attains a higher energy level. The atom then emits two photons: one of wavelength 1281
nm to reach an intermediate energy level, and a second to return to the ground state.
(a) What higher level did the electron reach?
(b) What intermediate level did the electron reach?
(c) What was the wavelength of the second photon emitted?
Chapter 8
1. Write a full set of quantum numbers for the following:
(a) The outermost electron in an Li atom.
(b) The electron gained when a Br atom becomes a Br- ion.
(c) Th electron lost when a Cs atom ionizes
(d) The highest energy electron in the ground-state B atom.
2. Define shielding and effective nuclear charge. What is the connection between the
two?
3. Does the reaction of a main-group metal oxide in water produce an acidic or a basic
solution? Write a balanced equation for the reaction of a Group 2A(2) oxide with water.
1
Section B
Chapter 7
1. Use the Rydberg equation to find the wavelength (in nm) of the photon emitted when
an electron in an H atom undergoes a transition from n = 5 to n = 2.
2. Are the following combinations allowed? If not, show two ways to correct them:
(a) n = 1; l = 0; ml = 0 (b) n = 2; l = 2; ml = +1
(c) n = 7; l = 1; ml = +2 (d) n = 3; l = 1; ml = -2
3. In addition to continuous radiation, fluorescent lamps emit some visible lines from
mercury. A prominent line has a wavelength of 436 nm. What is the energy (in J) of one
photon of it?
Chapter 8
1. Given the following partial electron configurations,
I [Ne] 3s23p2 II [He] 2s22p5 III [Kr] 5s2 IV [Ne] 3s23p4
(a) Identify each element.
(b) Rank the four elements in order of increasing atomic size.
(c) Rank them in order of increasing ionization energy.
2. Write the full electron configuration of the Period 3 element with the following
successive IEs (in kJ/mol):
IE1 = 738; IE2 = 1450; IE3 = 7732; IE4 = 10539; IE5 = 13628
3. How the measurements of paramagnetism used to support electron configurations
derived spectroscopically? Use Cu(I) and Cu(II) as examples.
