Relativity and Reference Frames Notes

(1) Time dilation refers to the difference in elapsed time measured by observers in different reference frames in relative motion. An observer in a moving reference frame will measure a longer time interval between two events than an observer in a stationary reference frame. (2) Length contraction refers to the phenomenon where objects appear shorter when measured in the direction of motion. The actual length of an object decreases as its velocity increases relative to the observer's frame of reference. (3) Galilean and Lorentz transformations relate space and time coordinates between two inertial frames in relative motion. The Lorentz transformations incorporate the constant speed of light and reduce to the Galilean transformations in the limit of low velocities compared
