Grade 11 Physics: Potential & Capacitance

This document contains a physics assignment on potential and capacitance for grade 11 students. It includes multiple choice questions testing concepts of electric potential and field as well as short answer questions about capacitors. Students are asked to calculate capacitances of different capacitor configurations, determine electric fields and potentials, compare risks of parallel and series connections, and solve problems involving energy stored in capacitors connected to batteries. Diagrams of capacitor networks are provided to help students solve equivalent capacitance and energy storage problems.

(d) 𝐸⃗ = 𝚤̂(2𝑥𝑦 + 𝑧 ) + 𝚥̂(𝑥 ) + 𝑘 3𝑧 𝑥

II. Answer the following questions in 30-40 words.

Q:1 Two capacitors C1 and C2 are connected to a voltage source in a parallel connection. Another
arrangement of these capacitors is connected to the same voltage source but now in series. In which
case the risk of handling the capacitors is more? Give reason in support of your answer.

Q:2 How is the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor affected on heating the dielectric material filled
between its plates? (Ignore thermal expansion and assume that dipole orientations are temperature
independent). Give reasons.

Q:3 Show that the magnitude of the polarization of dielectric medium is equal to the surface density of
bound charges induced on its surface?

Q:4 Draw equipotential surfaces corresponding to a field that uniformly increases in magnitude but
remains constant along z direction. How are these surfaces different from that of a constant electric field
along Z-direction?

Q:5 Show that the capacitance of a spherical conductor is 4𝜋𝜀 times the radius of the spherical
conductor.

Q:6 A spherical capacitor has an inner sphere of radius 12 cm and an outer sphere of radius 13 cm. The
outer sphere is earthed and the inner sphere is given a charge of 2.5 μC. The space between the concentric
spheres is filled with a liquid of dielectric constant 32.
(a) Determine the capacitance of the capacitor.
(b) What is the potential of the inner sphere?
(c) Compare the capacitance of this capacitor with that of an isolated sphere of radius 12 cm. Explain
why the latter is much smaller.

Q:7 Show that the capacitance of a spherical conductor is 4𝜋𝜀 times the radius of the spherical
conductor.

Q:8 A capacitor of unknown capacitance is connected across a battery of V volts. The charge stored in
it is 360 μC. When potential across the capacitor is reduced by 120μF, the charge stored in it becomes
120 μC.
Calculate:
(i) The potential V and the unknown capacitance C.
(ii) What will be the charge stored in the capacitor, if the voltage applied had increased by 120 V?

Q:9 a) Find the eqwuivalent capacitance between A and B in the combination given below. Each
capacitor is of 2μF capacitance.
b) If a dc source of 7V is connected across AB, how much charge is drawn from the source and what is
the energy stored in the network?

Q:10 The figure shows a network of capacitors where the numbers indicate capacitances in microfarad.
Find the value of capacitance C, if the equivalent capacitance between point A and B is to be one
microfarad.

Q:11 In the following arrangement of capacitors, the energy stored in 6µF capactitor is E. Find the
value of the following: a) energy stored in 12µF capacitor b) energy stored in 3µF capacitor c) total
energy drawn from the battery.
