Product FAQs- MPLS VPN
Service Offerings
1. What is MPLS VPN?
MPLS stands for Multi-Protocol Label Switching. It is a mechanism for routing traffic within a
telecommunications network, as data travels from one network node to the next. MPLS can
provide applications including VPNs (Virtual Private Networks), traffic engineering (TE) and Quality
of Service (QoS).
It is a type of data-carrying technique for a high-performance telecommunications network. It
directs data from one network node to the next based on short path labels rather than long network
addresses, avoiding time consumption in complex lookups in routing table. Jio offers Layer 2 and
Layer 3 MPLS VPN variants.
2. What are the business benefits of MPLS VPN services?
Jio MPLS services create a highly secure network that connects geographically dispersed
establishments over a highly resilient, scalable and secure enterprise-grade network to ensure
seamless end-user experience. Some of the business benefits are as follows:
Access to private & secured network with no exposure to the Internet
Enhancement of productivity with reliable end user experience
Ability to integrate the Extended Enterprise viz. Dealers, Distributors and C&F Agents with the
Enterprise’s Management core
Ability to scale as per business requirement
3. How does MPLS VPN prevent mixing traffic from different customers?
Traffic across the service providers’ network is separated by logically isolated VRFs (Virtual Routing
and Forwarding tables), which prevent traffic from one customer getting fused with other
irrespective of using the same physical network infrastructure.
4. Who can opt for MPLS VPN services?
Services can be availed by an organization with multiple office locations with the need to exchange
real-time information between various establishments. MPLS VPN supports business productivity
software like ERP, Core Banking etc. ensuring consistent performance.
5. What kind of bandwidths are supported by MPLS VPN services?
MPLS VPN supports various bandwidths and is a highly scalable solution. You can opt for bandwidth
ranging from 1 Mbps to 10 Gbps.
6. Does MPLS VPN support VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) services?
You can use VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) services between sites connected through MPLS
VPN. But voice calls originating from IP network to and from PSTN (Public Switched Telephone
Network) or mobile network is not permitted as per regulatory norms.
7. Is there any specific IP address policy for User as many of them share a common physical
infrastructure of the service provider?
Each user can use his or her own set of IP address stacks, as each user traffic is restricted to his or
her VRF (Virtual Routing and Forwarding) only. Multiple users can use their own IP address schema
as per their policy. The architecture of the service provider network is built-in with the capability to
handle overlapping IP addresses from various users simultaneously at the network element level.
8. What are the VPN variants available?
Layer-3 (L3) and Layer-2 (L2) VPN are the product variants available currently.
9. What is L3 VPN and L2 VPN?
Layer 2: In a Layer 2 VPN, routing is controlled by your switches. The switch connected to a service
provider on a Layer 2 VPN selects the appropriate circuit on which the traffic needs to be sent. The
service provider switch receiving the traffic sends it across the service provider’s network to the
service providers switch connected to the receiving site. The service provider switches do not store
or process your routes; the switches must be configured to send data to the appropriate tunnel.
Layer 3: In a Layer 3 VPN, the routing is controlled by the service provider’s routers. Therefore,
Layer 3 VPNs require more configuration on the part of the service provider, the service provider’s
routers store and process your routes over the network for traffic transition.
10. Does Jio support IP Security or SSL MPLS services?
Jio, at present, does not provide IP Security or SSL MPLS VPN services, but you can create IPSec
tunnels over the enterprise Internet leased line (ILL) service provided by Jio.
11. What CPEs are offered with MPLS VPN?
Currently, Jio provides unmanaged services only. Jio provided managed CPEs (rental model) is
planned for future enhancement.
12. What are the last-mile options that are used to connect sites?
Last-mile MPLS VPN connectivity options include:
Wireline - Fiber Ethernet, Fiber GPON
Wireless - UBR (Unlicensed Band Radio)

For Hub-Spoke MPLS VPN topology:-
Billing will start from the date of commissioning of the Hub site and the first Spoke site,
whichever is later
Thereafter, as and when new Spoke sites are commissioned, billing for those sites would
add up in the composite bill sent to you, from their respective dates of activation
For Full Mesh MPLS VPN topology:-
Billing will start from the date of the commissioning of the second site. After that, as and
when new Spoke sites are commissioned, billing for those sites will add up in the composite
bill sent to you, from their respective dates of activation
