Location Tracker App for BSU Students

This document presents a problem set for an engineering data analysis course at Batangas State University - Alangilan Campus. The problem set involves developing a location tracker app for mechanical engineering students at the university. The objectives are to provide safety by tracking student locations when entering and exiting campus, give assurance to the school, and allow guardians to know their safety amid rising kidnapping cases. A survey will gather data on whether the app is feasible and solves safety issues. The target population is 50 mechanical engineering students who will be randomly sampled. The survey questions will assess student comfort with location tracking and perceptions of safety and usefulness of such an app.

Topic: Developing Location Tracker App for Mechanical Engineering Students in Batangas
State University - Alangilan Campus

Objectives
● To provide safety for students who enter and exit the school premises by tracking
their location. .
● To give assurance to the school administration, professors, faculty staff, and
employees inside the school.
● To guarantee the student’s guardians, relatives, and loved ones about their safety
knowing that kidnapping is prominent nowadays.

Introduction
More kidnapping cases were enlightened in 2022, and it became extremely alarming with
the fact that face-to-face classes had just begun. The threat among college students has increased
rapidly, which has caused authorities to take action and people to panic. According to reports,
acquaintances are more likely to kidnap women than men. Notably, it also shows that teenagers
are the most common victims of non-family abductions. A person is kidnapped when they are
taken by force, threat, or deception with the intention of keeping them captive against their will.
It might be carried out for political, ransom, or other reasons. Meanwhile, abduction is when a
criminal takes someone away using open force, fraud, coercion, or persuasion. Both pose the
greatest threat to teenagers, particularly students.
That being said, this survey questionnaire aims to study whether the launch of the app is
feasible or not. The questions will provide the researchers with data that is needed in developing
the app or if it clearly solves the problem of the increasing threat of kidnapping cases. The app is
simply made to provide security and safety for the students by tracking their location. Every
student is expected to log in and a code will be sent to them. The code should only be given to
the people they trust or the people that are responsible for them. The feature has two options: one
is for the student device, and they should log in using their respective ID number; the second is
for their teachers, parents, guardians, and friends, to whom they will send the code. Notably, this
location tracker app is still in the development phase; therefore, data gathered is essential to its
full development and innovation.

Discussion of Target Population and Sample

Students’ security and safety are the main focus of this study. Therefore, the target
population that will be used for the study will be the fifty (50) Mechanical Engineering students
of Batangas State University-Alangilan Campus. The sampling method that will be used is
simple random sampling as it is the most convenient for this experiment. Furthermore, an online
survey would be very ideal for the experiment where students can easily and quickly access the
questionnaire through Google Forms.
Construction of Survey Questionnaire

Dear Respondents,

We, Group IX, Mechanical Engineering students of Batangas State University- Alangilan
Campus-The National Engineering University, are conducting a Research Project entitled
“Developing Location Tracker App for Mechanical Engineering Students in Batangas State
University - Alangilan Campus”.

Kindly accomplish this survey questionnaire about the related information to our study by filling
up the spaces provided. Thank you! Please take your time in answering the questionnaire as
honestly as you can. Rest assured that the responses will not be used aside. The success of this
study greatly depends on the accuracy of the information that you will entrust. This will be
treated with the utmost confidentiality and will be used for academic purposes only.

Requiring students to disclose their locations raises ethical concerns related to privacy invasion, autonomy, and consent. While the intention is to enhance safety, mandating such disclosure could infringe on individual rights if not properly managed with clear, informed consent and effective data protection measures. The app's design must balance security with respect for personal freedom .

Expanding the app's target audience involves considering factors such as scalability of the app's infrastructure, potential wider acceptance among other student groups, and additional resources for managing increased data loads. The feasibility is marked by potential benefits of enhanced security for the entire campus, but necessitates evaluations of varying privacy expectations and differing levels of technological accessibility among students from diverse disciplines .

Simple random sampling was chosen for the survey to ensure every Mechanical Engineering student at Batangas State University-Alangilan Campus had an equal chance of being selected. This method is considered appropriate due to its simplicity and ability to avoid bias, making the collected data reliable for examining the app's feasibility .

Potential limitations affecting the effectiveness of the location tracker app include technical issues such as GPS accuracy, privacy concerns, user compliance in keeping devices with them, and possible reluctance to share location data. Additionally, logistical challenges in ensuring all students have compatible technology and maintaining server reliability for continuous tracking may hinder the app's performance .

The app ensures student safety by allowing only trusted individuals—such as teachers, parents, and guardians—access to the user's location, safeguarding their privacy by restricting access to a unique code given by the student. This dual-option system allows students and their trusted contacts to log into the system, ensuring that location data remains secure and shared only with designated people .

The demographic data helps categorize students based on their living conditions, proximity to the university, and travel habits, providing insights into different safety needs and concerns. This enables researchers to tailor the app's functionality to better address the specific security requirements of diverse student groups, aligning with the study's objectives of enhancing student safety .

Implementing a location tracker at BSU could offer numerous benefits such as enhanced personal safety, increased parental reassurance, and improved emergency response. It also promotes a culture of accountability and awareness within educational environments, while simultaneously serving as a tool for academic institutions to monitor and manage student attendance and movements efficiently .

A location tracker application could enhance student safety by enabling immediate tracking of individuals' whereabouts, thereby reducing response times in emergencies such as attempted abductions. It acts as a deterrent to potential kidnappers aware of its functionality and provides peace of mind to families by ensuring their loved ones' safety .

Researchers plan to collect data through an online survey distributed to 50 Mechanical Engineering students at the Batangas State University-Alangilan Campus using Google Forms. This approach is practical due to its convenience and accessibility, allowing for quick data collection and informed participation from students .

The development of the location tracker app was prompted by an increase in kidnapping cases when face-to-face classes resumed in 2022. This posed a significant threat, especially to college students, causing authorities and communities to seek preventive measures. The app aims to alleviate fears by providing reassurance regarding student safety through real-time location tracking .
