Torque and Force Calculations in Statics

1. The sum of all the torques at point D is 0 Nm. 2. The force the pivot exerts on the beam is 49.05 N located 0.13 m from the center of the beam. 3. The reaction forces at the supports of the bridge are 750 kg at the left end and 1750 kg at the right end.

2. A uniform beam of length, L =1.0 m and mass, m = 5.0 kg is balanced on a pivot point, placed
directly beneath the center of the beam. Body 1 with mass m1 = 2 kg with distance 0.2 m to the
right of the pivot point, and a second body 2 with m2 = 3 kg with distance m to the left of the pivot
point, such that the beam neither translates nor rotates.
a) Find force Fpivot that the pivot exerts on the beam
b) Find the location of pivot point that maintains static equilibrium
(49.05 N, 0.13 m)
3. A car is parked on a bridge as shown in Figure 2. The car weighs 1000 kg which is acting through its
center of gravity (CG). The bridge weighs 500 kg, which is uniformly distributed. Assume the bridge
is rigid. Find the reaction forces at the supports of the bridge at the two ends.

4. A 0.75 kg bird stands on a uniform 1.0 kg stick as shown in Figure 3. The stick is attached to a wall
with a hinge and to the ceiling with a rope of negligible mass. Find is the tension in the rope.
(T = 1.042 N)
5. A 70 kg man is horizontal in a push-up position as in Figure 4. Find the vertical forces acting on his
hands and his feet.
