Question/Answer
Q1. What is a mountain? How are mountains useful to us?
Ans. A mountain is a landform which rises more than 900 metres above the mean sea level.
Importance of mountains
1. Mountains act as a barrier against cold and hot winds.
2. Rivers originating from mountains provide water for irrigation and for other needs.
3. The slopes of mountains have rich pasture lands and valuable forests.
4. Some mountains are rich in minerals.
Q2. What are plateaus? What is the importance of plateaus?
Ans. Plateaus are highlands rising from the surrounding areas. They have flat tops.
Importance of plateaus
1. Plateaus have grasslands on which cattle and sheep are reared.
2. Some plateaus are rich in mineral deposits.
Q3. What are plains? Why are plains thickly populated?
Ans. Flat and low-lying land surfaces are called plains. They are also called lowlands.
Importance of plains
1. Plains have fertile soil which is suitable for agriculture. Most ancient civilizations came up
on the banks of rivers on the plains.
2. Most big cities and towns are located in the plains.
3. It is easier to construct roads, railways, aerodromes and canals in the plains.
Q4. What are deserts? What are the main features of a desert?
Ans. Deserts are large areas covered with sand. They receive very little rainfall. These areas
have a dry climate. Deserts have-
1. Very hot days and cold nights.
2. Frequent dust storms.
3. Hills of sand called sand dunes.
4. Little vegetation due to less rainfall.
Q5. How is a delta formed?
Ans. In its lower course, the river joins a bigger water body such as a sea. In this course, the
speed of river is very slow. The river deposits the silt it carries near the mouth, forming a
triangular shaped land called delta.
Think and answer
Q. Jammu and Kashmir is a thinly populated state. Why?
Ans. Jammu and Kashmir is a thinly populated state due to an unsuitable climate, shortage of
flat land and difficulty in transportation.
Extra Question
Q. A river passes through three stages before reaching the sea. Explain it.
Ans. A river passes through three stages- upper, middle and lower- before reaching the sea.
1. The upper stage- In this stage, rivers originate from the mountains. The speed of the river
is very high. Some features of this stage are canyons, waterfalls and rapids.
2. The middle stage- In this stage, rivers enters the plains. The speed of water decreases and
the river develops loops, which are called meanders.
3. The lower stage- In its lower stage, the river joins a bigger water body such as a sea. In this
stage, the speed of the river is very slow. The river deposits the silt it carries near the
mouth, forming a triangular shaped land called delta.
