LESSON NOTE – MATHEMATICS, JUNE – 2023
UNIT – 3, SUBTRACTION
THEME - PLANTS
Taking away some number or objects from a group is called subtraction.

The number that is subtracted is called subtrahend and the number from which we
subtract is called minuend. The result of subtraction is called difference.

Eg: 1258 – 1200 = 58

minuend – subtrahend = difference

Properties of subtraction:
1. When zero (0) is subtracted from a number, the difference is the number itself.

Eg: 1345 – 0 = 1345

2. When a number is subtracted from itself, the difference is zero.

Eg: 6532 – 6532 = 0

3. When one (1) is subtracted from a number,

the difference is the predecessor of the given number.

Eg: 4000 – 1 = 3999

Note: Always subtract the smaller number

from the bigger number.
