Soil Investigation Method Statement

This document provides a method statement for soil investigation works for the construction of 3 TNB cable bridges in Bayan Lepas, Penang in May 2023. It outlines the plant and equipment used, including a drilling machine, drilling rods, casing, and in-situ testing and sampling equipment. It then describes the sequence of boring work, including setting out drilling locations, drilling operations, in-situ testing such as SPT, undisturbed sampling, rock coring, and termination criteria. Safety measures are also outlined requiring all personnel to wear PPE and comply with OSHA regulations.

3. Occupational Safety and Health 4

1. Plants and Equipment
The plants and machinery include:

a. Drilling Machine
A frame drilling machine to form the borehole with attached drilling accessories
suit for all types of overburden soils or rock.

b. Drilling rod
BW rod is used as a rod for drilling.

c. Casing
NW casing is used as a casing as requested by JKR for preventing collapsing of
borehole during drilling.

d. In-situ Testing and Sampling Equipment

i. SPT Hammer
ii. SPT Split Tube Sampler
iii. NMLC Rock Core Sampler Barrel
iv. Thin Wall Tube Sampler

2. Sequence of Boring Work

a. Setting Out of Drilling Location

Prior commencement of drilling, location of borehole I established by surveyor
with coordinates provided by client/consultant before the drilling machine is set
over the position.

b. Drilling Operation
The drilling machine used is a rotary A frame type with a drilling capabilities of
up to 100m depth.

A water hose is connected from the mud pump to the water swivel of the drilling
machine. BW rod of 3.0m with attached drag bits or roller bits size of 73mm is
then attached to the water swivel.
A recycle tank is prepared prior any drilling works.

When all the above in a place, drilling begins until it reach the required depth for
in-situ testing or sampling.

Sampling or testing depth is normally determined by the S.O on site or otherwise

is determined by the drilling supervisor.

The drilling, sampling and in-situ testing process is repeated until the required
depth or refusal is encountered.

c. In-situ Testing
SPT is carried out at whenever required at any depth (commonly at 1.5m
intervals) by using a standard free drop hammer weighing 63.5kg. The free drop
distance is 760mm. Blow count is recorded at every 75mm over a length of
450mm.

The spoon is connected to the NW rods and is lowered down using a rod holder
until the required depth. An adapter is plug onto top of the rod and the SPY
hammer is placed on top adapter and the test is ready to start. The hammer will
automatically trip when it is lifted up to 760mm.

The first 150mm is recorded as seating drive and N value is recorded after the
150mm to the total penetration length of 450mm.

However, if the sitting drive is more than 25 blows and less than 150mm
penetration, the N value is measure from after 25 blows and if 50 blows, N is
achieved, the SPT is considered completed.

Sample recovered from the SPT spoon is collected into plastic bags, sealed,
labeled, and store under a cool area. Sample collected is sent to laboratory within
a soonest possible time with care.

d. Undisturbed Sampling
Undisturbed samples shall be taken with the thin-walled tube sampler described
in MS 2038:2006:Clause [Link]. Minimum outside diameter of the tube shall be
compatible with size of borehole or casing adopted or the size approved by the
S.O. Wall thickness shall be between 1.5mm and 2.0mm with an inside clearance
of 0.5% to 1.0%. Inside of the tube shall be 10% nominally. The tube shall be
pushed into the base of the borehole by continuous thrust and steady motion
without driving, impact or twisting. The drilling rig or boring plant used shall be
capable of exerting a static thrust 25kN on the sampler.

e. Rock Coring
When rock is encountered, a NMLC triple tube core barrel of rock with every size
of 54mm is used to core into rock.

Rock sample recovered is placed in a standard wooden core box of length 1.0m x
55mm x 5 rows and properly labeled.

f. Termination Criteria
The termination criteria should be as follows following whichever encounter first:

i. Soils
Boreholes should be terminated when 7x hard layer, SPT,N=50 blows is achieved
repetitively.

ii. Rocks
Rock Min. Core
Igneous rocks (granite) & bore depth <24m or 4.5m
Recovery ratio R/r <50%
Igneous rocks, bore depth > 24m 3.0m
Shale/schist/slate/sandstone 6.0m
Recovery ratio R/r >50%
Shale/schist/slate/sandstone 3.0m
Recovery ratio R/r <50%
Limestone R/r >50% and no cavity 6.0m
Limestone R/r <50% or with cavity 9.0m-21.0m
Other rocks R/r > 50% 4.5m
Other rocks R/r < 50% 6.0m
Min. Core size should be 52mm diameter
(NMLC or HMLC or equivalent)
3. Occupational Safety and Health
a. All the personnel at site, irrespective visitor or staff must wear personnel
equipment as far as reasonable.
b. Operations to be undertaken by skilled experienced personnel only.
c. All safety aspects will be fulfilled based on OSHA 1994.
