Research Paper Assignment: Rough Draft Part 1

Thesis Statement
Eating disorders are complex illnesses that have a heavy influence on mental and physical
health, especially among teenagers

Body of the paper

Most eating disorders are characterized by constant concern and insecurity about weight,
body shape, and food, leading to unsafe eating behaviors. These behaviors have a negative
and important damage on your body's health and ability to obtain adequate nutrition.
According to the American Psychiatry Association, “eating disorders are behaviorally
characterized by severe and persistent disturbance in eating behaviors and associated
distressing thoughts and emotions. They can be very serious conditions affecting physical,
psychological, and social function” Angela Guarda (2023). This type of condition usually
occurs in adolescents and young adults because at these ages is when there are more concerns
regarding the appearance, weight, and shape of the body, most often among women that look
for acceptance in people due to physical stereotypes predisposed to women. Eating disorders
are also phycological disorders that involve disturbances in a person’s behavior, this usually
happens along with other psychiatric disorders like anxiety, stress, depression, substance
abuse, and obsessive-compulsive disorder; this is why the treatments for eating disorders
come along with a nutritionist work and mental health care with therapy to recover from this
illness and avoid heavy consequences that this illness bring. The cause of why eating
disorders happen mostly in teens is not a certainty reason, but a combination of many factors
including psychological issues, genetic predisposition, family and friends relationships, low
self-esteem, and social standards that leads to the stereotypes of the “ideal body” that affects
mostly teens that look for approval in others and the sociocultural issues that are a potential
influence on teenagers who are most susceptible in developing eating disorders and tending
to deal with more detrimental side effects of this illness.
