ACT Employability Statement

Event Management is a dynamic industry in Australia as events make employment opportunities


while creating a vibrant platform for the people to network with the community. However, the
Covid-19 pandemic had impacted the industry, and with the preventive measures taken, it started
to recover from 2021.
Covid safe event guidance materials provided by the ACT Government could be considered as a
positive movement for the event industry in Canberra.
I have researched the job opportunities available in this field and the future of the event
management industry. The Event Management industry is a challenging industry that requires
experienced professionals with strategic planning ability. Hence, I believe my experience in the
event management industry for over 6 years together with my professional qualifications will be a
strong factor in securing employment in Canberra.
An analysis done by me on the event industry in Canberra shows a positive trend in the industry:

• Approximately 85 events were listed on the [Link] website for


February 2022 in different formats including workshops, exhibitions, concerts, etc.
• The ACT government has taken an effort to encourage event planners to organize a
higher number of events each year which could contribute towards economic and social
benefits
• The ACT Government is committed to building and nurturing Canberra’s events calendar
through event delivery, event funding, event attraction, and ongoing event development
• There are many companies in Canberra which are dedicated to event planning and
organizing
The ‘2025 Major Events Strategy for the ACT’ outlines the importance of major events and the
key role they could play in making the city a great place to live, work, and visit. The strategic vision
of this initiative is to ‘To have Canberra recognized as a world-class events destination. One
whose events reflect the city’s essence and personality. Hence, ACT Government is committed
to promoting Canberra as a major event destination in the world.
In addition, the major universities in Canberra - Australian National University, University of
Canberra – also conduct a multitude of events in different formats such as conferences, webinars,
orientation programs, etc.

This indicates a high potential to seek a job opportunity in the Event Management field, as I do
have experience in the relevant field in an academic institution.

ACT Law Society is a professional body for the Legal Practitioners in the ACT. The
advertised job requires managing and handling annual events for professional
development of the association, planning and delivering member-focused events which
contribute towards Continuous Professional Development (CPD) of members.

As the job description indicated, I have hands-on experience working with a professional
body dedicated to Chartered Accountants, where I was engaged in organizing CPD
events, Executive programs focusing on the institute members. I have experience from
the planning stage of the events to the execution stage while focusing on attention to
detail, clear communication, professionalism. This helped enormously to complete the
institutional events handled by me successfully.

Furthermore, I have carried out both administrative and logistical tasks to deliver smooth,
high-quality events. My Project management skills, time management, and high level of
motivation were key factors to be a high performer at CA Sri Lanka.

Therefore, I believe I am a competent candidate for this employment opportunity.

This is a professional body committed to supporting Architects of the country. This role is
responsible for coordination, delivery, and evaluation of programs including events and
award ceremonies.
Experience gained at CA Sri Lanka would help to work in a role like this as I have handled
the overall coordination of programs, which includes communication with members and
other related external and internal parties. Furthermore, I have experience in doing
logistical arrangements coordinating with relevant teams. I was also responsible for
collecting feedback from event participants, analyzing collected data, post-event
evaluation, and reporting to senior management.

I have been a part of the organizing team of the largest event conducted by CA Sri Lanka
– ‘CA Sri Lanka National Conference’ for three consecutive years (2016, 2017, and 2018)
which happens for three days with the participation of approximately 1,500 professionals
in the field of Accounting and Finance (Both Chartered Accountants and Non-members).
Clear communication with professionalism, smooth handling of inquiries, attention to
details, and networking skills were key to being a high performer.

Moreover, as a part of my job role, I was responsible for reporting for 2 committees and
have worked closely with them for the event approval processes and related matters.

3. Event Coordinator at Institute of Public Administration Australia (IPAA), ACT

The event coordinator at IPAA is expected to support the Event Manager in delivering
physical and virtual events. As mentioned earlier, my experience is directly related to the
overall coordination of events, and have hands-on experience in planning, organizing, and
handling events. In addition, my document preparation skills (reports, proposals, etc) could
be well utilized in similar capacity job roles.
Skills in handling email communications, the Microsoft Office package, and the G-Suite
will be an added advantage. Willingness to learn new things, experimental thinking, and
problem-solving skills practiced at previous employments at CA and SLIIT will make me a
competent candidate for this type of job role.
Moreover, hybrid event management which was practiced at SLIIT during the Covid-19
pandemic will be useful in the future as the ACT Government has given guidelines on
Event management with the ‘New-normal’.
The above factors are a brief outline of the employment opportunities relevant to my occupation.
However, there are a plethora of other event management opportunities available in Canberra.
Detailed research shows that my experience in the Event Management field coupled with
educational qualifications will enable me to be a competent applicant for Event Management/
Coordination jobs. Based on the research that I have done, I believe there are a lot of opportunities
for experienced professionals in the ‘Event Industry’ in the ACT.
