MAP Sensor
See Figure 4-24. The manifold absolute pressure sensor
(MAP sensor) is supplied 5 volts from the ignition control
module and sends a signal back to the ignition control mod-
ule. This signal varies in accordance with engine vacuum and
atmospheric barometric pressure. Changes in barometric
pressure are influenced by weather and altitude.
● DTC P0106 will set if the MAP sensor signal fluctuates 1. Connect BREAKOUT BOX (Part No. HD-42682)

Ignition Coil
Ignition coil codes will set if the ignition coil primary voltage is
out of range. This could occur if there is an open coil or loss of
power to the coil. If front and rear codes are set simulta-
neously, it is likely a coil power failure or a coil failure.
The coil receives power from the engine run/stop switch. The
ignition control module is responsible for turning on the coils
by providing the ground to activate the coils, which in turn
powers the coils.

Does DTC U1097
return?
A diagnostic trouble code, such as P0373 or P0374, can be set for the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) if the signal from the sensor is weak or absent . Using a Breakout Box enables connection to the ignition control module wire harness to diagnose this issue . A weak signal might not provide the necessary voltage and continuity levels required for proper engine timing and sequence detection, often resulting in such error codes.
The vehicle may not start if the TSM/TSSM is not connected to the wiring harness due to the lack of a critical serial data connection . To resolve this, ensure the proper reconnection of the TSM/TSSM to the harness, following the correct password assignment procedure as detailed under PASSWORD LEARN . This involves using the appropriate tools like the Harness Connector Test Kit and ensuring all wires and connections are intact and correctly interfaced with the Breakout Box .
The diagnostic process for the TSM/TSSM involves a password learning procedure crucial for assigning a correct password to components like the ICM, ensuring that the serial communication remains intact for vehicle starting . This ensures that a diagnostic trouble code such as P1009 (incorrect password) or P1010 (missing password) does not prevent operational integrity . Proper password learning involves following detailed instructions for component replacements and facilitating learning mode via diagnostics tools like harness connector kits, maintaining security and preventing unauthorized starts .
A loss of TSM/TSSM serial data, indicated by DTC U1064, can disrupt vehicle functions relying on the security system, such as ignition and speed monitoring . To diagnose, inspect the related connections and ensure that serial data connectors are secure and free of damage. The Breakout Box aids in verifying continuity and detect shorts or disruptions in the wiring harness. Ensuring the electrical integrity of terminal connections, especially grounds, is crucial for resolving this communication issue .
If the ICM's battery voltage is outside the normal operating range of 8-16 volts while the engine is running, first check for related diagnostic trouble codes such as P0562 or P0563 . These codes indicate issues with low or high voltage, respectively. Investigate the battery and charging system to ensure proper functionality. Measurements of voltage using a multimeter can confirm circuit or battery integrity. Addressing connectivity and electrical supply concerns, such as corroded or loose terminals, may be necessary .
Upon detecting DTC P1351 to P1355, indicating ignition coil failure, proceeds with the following steps: Disconnect connector [83] to measure the voltage at Terminal B of the coil; it should equal battery voltage after the key is turned ON . Then, check the resistance between specific terminals: Front coil codes between coil Terminal B and Terminal C; Rear coil codes between Terminal B and Terminal A, ensuring the resistance falls within the 0.5-0.7 ohm range . Perform a wiggle test to check for intermittents if resistances pass initial tests .
The 5V reference voltage at the MAP sensor connector is crucial for its accurate operation, as it provides a stable supply for sensor measurements. To verify this voltage, measure the voltage between terminal C (R/W) and terminal A (BK/W) with the ignition ON to ensure it is approximately 5.0 volts . If the voltage reading deviates below 4.5V or exceeds 6V, it indicates a possible wiring error or sensor fault, necessitating repair or replacement of components .
When the check engine lamp illuminates and sets diagnostic codes P0106 or P0107 related to the MAP sensor, the procedure begins with checking resistance between MAP connector [80B] Terminal B and Breakout Box connector [10] terminal 11, ensuring it is less than 1 ohm . If there is an open or short, locate and repair the respective wire issues. If resistance checks out but voltage is incorrect (less than 4.5V or greater than 6V), replace the MAP sensor . Clear codes using speedometer self-diagnostics and confirm proper operation .
Within the engine management system, the vehicle speed sensor is monitored by the Ignition Control Module (ICM), which processes the vehicle speed signal and transmits it to the Turn Signal/Security Module (TSM/TSSM) and speedometer through a serial data connection . Any deviation from expected signal parameters, such as VSS sensor low or high (DTC P0501, P0502), is diagnosed by inspecting, cleaning, and testing continuity across relevant connectors and circuits to resolve issues .
The breakout box is a diagnostic tool that facilitates electrical testing of the ignition control module and associated wiring harnesses without direct disconnection of components . It should be installed between the harness and the component, such as the ICM, allowing for testing of voltage, resistance, and continuity within the circuit . The breakout box aids in pinpointing specific circuit issues by providing easier access to probe and measure signals, thereby ensuring that the electrical pathways maintain proper operation .
