I. INTRODUCTION
Academic performance is the measurement of student achievement across various
academic subjects. Teachers and education officials typically measure achievement using
classroom performance, graduation rates, and results from standardized tests and projects.
However, due to the extreme heat that we are experiencing now because of climate change, the
academic performance of the students seemed to be lacking. In recent decades, concern over
climate change has spread to every country. These climatic changes also have a variety of impacts
on Earth's life. The ecosystem is being impacted by climate change in different ways. It is the
gradual change in all the interconnected weather elements on our planet over approximately 30
years.

Climate change is occurring now as a result of human activity, and thus as a result of the
observed increase in greenhouse gas concentrations caused by human activities such as the use of
fossil fuels and land use change. Greenhouse gases are trapping more heat in the Earth's
atmosphere, causing global average temperatures to rise. Extreme heat waves are more likely to
occur more often and last longer as temperatures increase. Heat waves can be dangerous, causing
illnesses including heat cramps and heat stroke, and sometimes death. Warmer temperatures may
lead to other global changes. This is because higher temperatures in the atmosphere have had an
effect on the oceans, weather patterns, snow, and ice, as well as plants and animals. The greater
the warming, the more severe the effects on people and the environment. The extreme heat in the
Philippines is having an effect on our health. In 2020, an estimated 1.1 million children in the
Philippines was affected by high heat frequency (4.5 or more heat waves per year). Meanwhile,
heatwaves lasting 4.7 days or more affected at least 1.9 million children. Furthermore, these figures
are expected to rise by 2050. The resulting effects will be severe for health, safety, nutrition,
education, access to water, and future livelihoods.

The accustomed way of Filipino schoolyear usually ends in March, wherein the vacation
typically starts in April and May, the summer season in the Philippines. But due to the pandemic,
some things have changed which led us to the creation of the new normal society. Two years have
passed since students were in modular learning where they studied inside their houses which was
caused by the new normal. On October 2022, senior high school students at Nabua National High
School started to have their face-to-face classes. The Philippines experienced high-temperature
heat in April, the reason behind this is because summer is nearly approaching. Summer in the
Philippines usually begins in the middle of June and lasts until September, but due to climate
change, the frequency was changed. The extreme heat affected many people, such as only workers,
people inside their homes, children, the elderly, and especially students. Because of the extreme
heat, different school heads across the country ordered to implement blended learning for the
remaining week of the school year. This is soon followed by Nabua National High School. This is
done to ensure the safety of all students. In any case, it is impossible to avoid being affected by
the heat because we can feel it even in our homes. This study aims to determine the arious effects
of extreme heat temperature on the academic performance of senior high school students in Nabua
National High School. It aims to raise awareness regarding the significant effects of high heat
temperatures on students and how it may possibly affect their learning.

II. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to understand how the extreme heat weather condition affects senior high school
students’ academic performance at Nabua National High School.

Specifically, this seeks answers to the following:

1. What are the respondents' profiles in terms of their:

1.1 Age
1.2 Sex
1.3 General Weighted Average:
1.3.1 S.Y. 2022-2023 (Fourth Quarter Grade)
2. To what extent does exposure to extreme heat weather conditions influence the functioning and
cognitive concentration levels of senior high school students?

3. What are the perceived effects of extreme heat weather conditions on the physical and mental
well-being of senior high school students?

4. How does the duration and intensity of extreme heat weather conditions correlate with changes
in academic performance indicators such as test scores, grades, and overall academic achievement?

5. What coping strategies or adaptive measures do senior high school students employ to mitigate
the negative impact of extreme heat weather conditions on their academic performance?

6. Are there any significant differences in the impact of extreme heat weather conditions on the
academic performance of senior high school students at Nabua National High School?

III. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The results of this study will be highly beneficial to the following:
Students. To raise awareness regarding the significant effects of high-temperature heat on their
academic performance, and well-being.
School heads. Well aware of the situation the students are in, in this kind of climate.
Future Researchers. Added Related Literatures to studies that are similar to this topic.

IV. SCOPE AND LIMITATION

The focus of this study revolves around a specific external factor in academic performance
which is heat. Therefore, the study intends to figure out how high heat temperatures have an effect
on senior high school students’ academic performance. A maximum of thirty (30) respondents will
be acquired randomly with the same characteristics; a senior Highschool student that studies at
Nabua National High School. The study will be conducted at Nabua National Highschool during
the school year 2022-2023.

The study limits its focus to the effect of heat on the academic performance of Senior
Highschool Students in terms of their: attendance rate, concentration, mental and physical well-
being, coping strategies, and overall academic performance. The Investigation will focus on the
student’s academic work during the 4th quarter of the school year of 2022-2023. The researchers
will only limit one method in gathering the data: conducting an interview with the respondents to
be studied.

Senior high school students may experience more severe impacts due to developmental factors requiring higher cognitive processing and prolonged concentration, both of which are significantly hampered by high temperatures, thus affecting their academic performance more than other groups .

There is a negative correlation between the duration/intensity of heat waves and academic performance indicators; prolonged exposure to high temperatures results in drops in cognitive functions, reflected in decreased grades and test scores .

Extreme heat affects students' academic performance by reducing cognitive concentration levels, leading to lower test scores and grades. It also negatively impacts their physical and mental well-being, causing symptoms such as heat cramps or fatigue, which further hinder learning and performance .

The Philippines' climate, characterized by frequent and intense heat waves, affects students' concentration and cognitive abilities by causing heat-related stress that impacts their focus and ability to absorb information. This environmental stress can lead to diminished academic achievements, such as lower test scores and grades .

Studying the effects of extreme heat is significant as it raises awareness among students and school administrators about the direct correlation between high temperatures and decreased academic performance and well-being, further informing policy decisions and educational practices .

Students employ various coping strategies including staying hydrated, using fans or air-conditioning where available, and taking frequent breaks during study sessions to combat the effects of extreme heat on their cognitive performance .

The study highlights the need for integrating climate-resilient strategies in educational planning, such as developing infrastructure capable of mitigating heat stress, incorporating climate-adaptive curricula, and expanding blended learning models to improve resilience against environmental challenges in heat-affected regions .

Greenhouse gases are increasing global temperatures, leading to more frequent and severe heat waves that affect educational environments by making learning spaces uncomfortable and reducing students’ cognitive performance .

In response to extreme heat, Nabua National High School implemented blended learning to ensure student safety. This approach allows for a mix of face-to-face and remote classes, minimizing students' exposure to outdoor heat while maintaining academic progress .

Climate change has altered traditional educational schedules, such as extending the academic year into hotter months, leading to an increased need for adaptive learning methods like blended learning to accommodate extreme weather conditions and ensure student safety .
