Choosing a gym
How much does it cost?
Find out exactly what the membership includes. Be careful, because some gyms charge a joining fee as" well as the
membership fee. When you know how much you have to pay, ask yourself, "Am I going to find the time to come to
the gym regularly?" If the answer is "Yes", then read on....
Try it first
It may be possible to get a free trial - perhaps a couple of visits in order to get the 'feel' of a gym, and see if
it's really suitable for you. Some gyms offer a two or three month membership for first- timers-they hope that
people will like the gym enough to want to continue, and next time will pay for an annual membership.
What if there's a problem? Sometimes, something like an injury or illness or a job move means you can't use
your gym membership. A good club will be sympathetic and should, at the very least, allow you to freeze
your membership and then use it again when you're ready, or give you back your money. Who are the
members?
Try and find out how many active members the gym has. If a club has 10,000 members but only 1,000 are
active ones, it doesn't give you very much confidence. A club with 2,000 members and 700 active ones
shows that its members must be happy and satisfied with the service they are getting. What about the
equipment?
You walk in and see 40-50 pieces of equipment and you think "That's great - I'll never have to queue for
equipment". But remember, some clubs have really big memberships. Surprisingly, Monday evenings
between 6.00 and 8.00 are the busiest time of the week, so this is a good time to go along and check out the
worst possible situation!
And the staff?
It's the instructors and trainers that make a great gym. Some gyms try to attract members through their luxury
facilities and high-tech equipment. So don't just think what an amazing swimming pool, check that the staff are
qualified for their jobs. Do they seem happy in their work? Are there enough of them around at busy times? Do they
look interested in the members or are they more interested in showing off their own bodies?
Are you welcome?
Many gyms do wonderful things for new members on their first visit, for example one-to-one instruction with
a personal fitness programme, as well as perhaps advice on eating and diets. But in many cases, that's it. It
seems that when you've given them your money for the year, they suddenly lose interest in you. The best
thing you can do is find someone who has already joined the gym and ask them what their experiences are
of the service that is offered.
