Family Celebrations
in Costa Rica
In Costa Rica, distances are very short
and families can get together easily on
weekends, special occasions,
and holidays.
Costa Rican families often meet on
weekends to spend quality time. It is
also common to see entire families
together on holidays, weddings, baby
showers, graduations, or Mothers’ and
Fathers’ day.
At these celebrations, Ticos usually en-
joy traditional food like rice and chicken,
picadillo, tamales, and other delicious
dishes. People usually sit together and
chat, dance, exchange presents, con-
duct raffles, or play games.
Living in a small paradise like Costa
Rica has many advantages. People
can go from one place to another very
quickly and families can keep in touch
and meet frequently.
Look up the meaning of the new words in

your notebook.

Turnos
The attractions and activities for
visitors at tumnos are varied, color
ful, and entertaining. There, people
can enjoy amusement rides, mask
dances, marimba music, games,
and fireworks
Costa Rica is small in territory but
ich in gastronomy, One of the
most popular attractions at turnos
is typical food, which may vary de-
pending on the region. For example,
pork tamales are very popular in |_|
the Central Valley, arroz de maizis
one of the most famous dishes in
Guanacaste, and rice and beans is
everyone's favorite in Limén.
In Costa Rica, turnos are small,
popular festivals that started during
the colonial period for religious pur
poses. Turnos are still celebrated
all over the country, mostly in small,
rural communities.
The main objective of turnos is to
collect money for community devel-
opment. Building schools, churches,
and community buildings, and help-
ing the poor are just a few exam-
ples of how the organizers use the
funds raised at each festival.
