Peer influence can affect students’ decisions by providing social pressure or support towards particular educational paths or interests. This can manifest in emulation of peers’ choices or seeking acceptance and validation, which may either positively encourage good decision-making aligned with personal interests or negatively lead to choices that don’t align with individual aspirations .

Family occupation influences track preference by shaping students' perception of career possibilities and stability. Students often aspire to emulate successful professionals within the family or are directed towards careers believed to offer economic stability and similar lifestyle benefits. This familial guidance, whether explicit or implicit, affects their educational and career decisions .

Counseling is crucial for Grade 10 students as it helps them feel supported and taken seriously in their decision-making process. It provides them with the necessary guidance to understand the significance of their choice, addresses their concerns about future implications, and builds self-confidence which is vital for pursuing their ambitions and making informed decisions .

Draven (2022) identifies that Grade 10 students' choice of a senior high school strand is influenced by factors such as the benefits the students perceive the strand will provide in college life, and how well it aligns with their professional aspirations and personal strengths. The decision also hinges on the preparedness it offers in enhancing students' professional skills and addressing their weaknesses .

There is a direct relationship where higher academic performance increases career choice readiness by enhancing students’ self-efficacy and providing them more options for further education and career opportunities. Conversely, lower academic performance may limit these options and affect confidence in pursuing desired career paths .

Emotional stability plays a significant role by enabling students to manage stress and uncertainty associated with decision-making. Students with high emotional stability are more likely to make decisions aligned with their long-term goals, resist external pressures, and remain committed to their chosen path even when facing challenges .

Socio-economic status influences a student's decision by shaping their access to educational resources and information, affecting their confidence and expectations about potential career paths. Students from higher socio-economic backgrounds may have more exposure to diverse professional role models and thus different aspirations compared to those from lower socio-economic backgrounds .

Poorly informed choices can lead to long-term consequences such as mismatched career paths and dissatisfaction in professional pursuits, potentially resulting in frequent career changes, reduced job satisfaction, and lower earnings. These outcomes not only affect an individual's professional trajectory but also their overall well-being and socio-economic status .

High self-confidence levels empower students to pursue paths that align with their true interests and abilities, leading to more fulfilling and successful careers. Conversely, low self-confidence can result in conservative or misguided choices, where students opt for safer, less challenging paths that they believe are within their reach, potentially limiting their career satisfaction and growth .

The literature indicates that poor career choices at a young age can lead to negative psychological impacts such as reduced self-esteem, increased anxiety, and dissatisfaction with one’s career path. These consequences can persist into adulthood and affect not only psychological well-being but also socio-economic status and physical health .
