Media formats, the physical forms in which content is incorporated and displayed,

facilitate the learning process. Visual media is a type of media used for language learning. It can

be diagrams on a computer screen, whiteboard drawings, photographs, book graphics,

cartoons, etc. (Smaldino, Lowther, Mims, & Russell, 2015). This media provides a learning

experience that is consistent with students’ character as digital native. The visual media also

supports the creation of EFL students, expressing themselves to communicate with others.

Canva, a graphic-design tool website, is a visual technology media with a drag-and-drop

format and provides access to over a million photographs, graphics, and fonts. It has millions of

images, photo filters, free icons and shapes, and hundreds of fonts (Canva, n.d.). Canva as a

website is a source of visual media that can be used as a window into the wider world outside

the language class and is, of course, a collection of authentic material that is easily accessible.

Canva can be integrated to promote learning. Smaldino et al., (2015) stated that visuals

in the classroom, including Canva, can serve multiple purposes, such as; 1) to make abstract

ideas concrete; 2) to motivate students; 3) to give direct attention; 4) to repeat the information;

5) to recall previous knowledge; and 6) to reduce learning effort. Canva is believed to be a tool

for moving in just a few clicks from an abstract idea to a concrete site map. In addition, it can

create a positive learning environment through any provided facilities, thus affecting the

concentration, memory and attitude of the students. If students feel positive about their
situation, they will also feel more positive about what they are doing and will be more willing to

participate through direct attention in the learning process. The best way in learning is when

the students get experience through the meaningful learning process and it becomes easier to

recall. Canva provides moment experience for students to engage in creative process, so they

can repeat the information through recalling their previous knowledge.

All in all, most research studies in technology media conducted in EFL classes rarely take

the application of Canva specifically to the writing process into consideration. We can refer to

Wahyuni and Thohiriyah (2018), who reviewed Canva as the infographic tool in presenting the

teaching materials, among the existing research studies in this field. The study results showed

that Canva offers different themes and professional layouts to create the compelling

infographic for presenting the teaching materials. It is also a simple tool that is extremely

userfriendly. It should be noted that their research only focused on infographics and they did

not incorporate the use of Canva as a language learning media.

Therefore, this study intends to find out whether there were any statistically significant

differences between the use of Canva and non-Canva on the students’ writing performance.

Besides, this study also tries to find out the students’ voices towards the implementation of

Canva in teaching writing.

Several researchers (Hernandez, 2017; Wiyaka, Mujiyanto, & Rukmini, 2018) point out

that technology is an important language teaching tool in this sense since the use of technology

can increase students’ motivation.

The changing dynamics of today’s curriculum changes necessitates the need for teachers to

have multiple roles; duties, competencies, and responsibilities in order to create interactive teaching

learning environments that are active, creative, effective, and enjoyable. Regarding teaching learning,

teachers are expected to be able to increase learning opportunities for their students while also

significantly improving the quality of their instruction in order to have the greatest possible impact on

the development of students’ competencies (Darmadi, 2015). The goal is for technology to make it

easier to explore skills, particularly when it comes to improving the abilities of students who are learning

a foreign language. Students will be more creative in their use of media if ICT is used as a teaching tool

because it provides opportunities for them to analyze and obtain information (Nilsen, 2016).

One of the newest media is ‘Canva for Education’. Canva is a graphic design tool website; visual

technology media with drag-and-drop formats and provides access to over a million photos, graphics,

and fonts. It provides millions free images, photo filters, icons and shapes, and hundreds of fonts (Canva,

n.d.). Canva as the website is one source of visual media that can used as a window to the wider outside

world language classes and, of course, a collection of authentic material that is easily accessible

(Yundayani et al., 2019). Meanwhile, other researcher stated that Canva is an online design program

that provides a variety of equipment such as presentations, resumes, posters, pamphlets, brochures,

graphics, infographics, banners, bookmarks, bulletins, etc. and in Canva, we can also make a

presentation. The types of presentations available in Canva, such as creative presentations, education,

business, advertising, technology, and so on (Garris Pelangi, 2020).

creativity of teachers and students in designing learning media, besides that this application greatly

saves time in designing learning media. In line with other researchers which stated the benefit of

implementation the Canva application, for example, (1) Has a variety of attractive designs; (2) Ready to

develop the imagination of educators and students in designing learning media considering the many

elements that have been given; (3) Does not need much time or time in the design process; and (4) In

designing, it is not necessary to use a PC, but it can be done through a gadget (Mudinillah & Rizaldi,

With the prominence and breadth of social media, exploring how these tools are used in the

classroom and their impact on student learning warrants exploration. Student familiarity with social

media applications like Instagram, LinkedIn and TikTok enable young designers to share ideas, questions,

and concepts with like-minded people outside the classroom, school and country. As social media gains

popularity in educational settings, it is important to investigate the methods and technologies that
effectively support meaningful learning experiences in design education. Specifically, the practices for

implementing social media sharing should be assessed beyond the current research. Adobe suite

products are prevalent in design education settings and reflect contemporary industry standards.

Unfortunately, these tools are challenging to learn. New online software tools like Canva have emerged

in response to these pains. Canva is a growing online application bridging the gap between creative

presentation creation and a thoughtful interface, thus impacting how students formulate and

disseminate class assignments. Canva's advantages over Adobe Suite products include a shorter learning

curve, spell-checking, video integration and built-in compatibility with social media products. Instagram

provides a comfortable avenue for expressing and connecting with design information for students who

grew up with social media. Students commonly engage with Instagram and TikTok for contemporary

cultural information and often follow established designers' accounts to gather design insights.

The content expectations for study two were identical to those in study one. Most design

students are immersed in Adobe's ecosystem and are unaware of Canva as a simple-to-use presentation

tool. Canva's interface is optimized for presentation and social media use, helping students easily

organize and disseminate their information. To introduce Canva to the class, instructors demonstrated

two of its key benefits: 1- Canva includes video and GIF capabilities that are not available in InDesign,

and 2- Canva is significantly easier to load and manipulate photos and type. Utilizing Canva to create

student presentations should save time and aid in audience engagement and learning.

There are many effective ways to use Canva in the classroom to build creativity, reinforce key

concepts, breakdown and synthesis complicated ideas, or spice up presentations. Because it is so easy to

learn and use, instructors could incorporate exercises designs to enhance student’s creativity. Educators

could also reinforce key concepts by asking students to review material and then visually represent the

information they have learned. Students could further be tasked with synthesizing complicated concepts

into easily understood visuals. Below are just a few ideas to get you started:

1. Social Media: Given the proliferation of social media in both personal and professional capacities,

communication students need to understand how to effectively create messaging on diverse social

media platforms. Canva is a great tool to integrate into a social media messaging assignment. Students

could learn best practices for each platform and then design a communication campaign utilizing that

knowledge. Additionally, instructors could utilize social media channels as part of their classroom

experience and implement a social media post assignment to help students master these critical skills. 4

2. Infographics: Research shows that infographics help students quickly comprehend and retain complex

information. Instructors could utilize Canva to create infographics highlighting key aspects of

complicated learning outcomes. Instructors could also flip this concept and ask students to tackle a

particularly complex subject matter by creating an infographic that would help their colleagues

understand the material. For example, students might be asked to create an infographic featuring the

best practices for posting on each major social media platform.

brand, determine key messaging, and design a look and feel that embodies those brand characteristics.

To help students accomplish this task, Canva features a specific area called “Your Brand” that allows

users to establish brand colors, fonts, logos and uploaded fonts. Students could use this area to record

key aspects of their brand for future use across different channels. Instructors could demonstrate how

to do this across print, online and social media platforms and then task students with an important

challenge to define and design banners for each social media platform that are representative of their

own personal brand.

4. Website design: The process of determining how an organization should communicate to their key

publics online is a great learning experience for students. Instructors could utilize Canva to have

students design a website for a specific organization. Through identifying different audience segments,

personas, navigation, and messaging, students must think deeply about their end users, understand how

and why they would visit the website, and anticipate potential issues an intuitive design might solve.

Thinking through the brand elements, messaging, organizational voice, and navigation would be a

helpful exercise for students who plan to pursue a career in communication, public relations, journalism,

advertising, marketing, and social media.
