 PROGRESSIVISM PHILOSOPHY

Progressivism is a student-centered philosophy that argues that theories can be

evaluated by experimentation, and learning comes from seeking answers to questions.
This philosophy values the empirical method of education, enabling individuals to have
their own opinions and encourages student engagement to be valuable to the learning
process. Progressivists believe that education should focus on the whole child, rather than
on the content or the teacher. This educational philosophy stresses that students should
test ideas by active experimentation. Learning is rooted in the questions of learners that
arise through experiencing the world.
Progressivism is an educational movement started by John Dewey that says that students
learn through their own experiences. Progressivism revolves around the students' needs,
including teaching students to be good citizens as well as good learners, a concept known
as focusing on the whole child.

Additionally, why is progressivism important in education? Progressivism.

Progressivists believe that individuality, progress, and change are fundamental to
one's education. Believing that people learn best from what they consider
most relevant to their lives, progressivists center their curricula on the needs,
experiences, interests, and abilities of students.

Hereof, what is the philosophy of education?

An educational philosophy refers to a teacher's vision of the grander purpose

of education and its role in society. Educational philosophy questions involve such
issues as a teacher's vision of their role as a teacher, their view of how students learn best,
and their basic goals for their students.

 Progressivism is the educational philosophy which is grounded in the “pure”

philosophy of pragmatism. Pragmatic ontology holds that reality is in the area of
everyday life, personal experience. Its view is that ideas should be tested for their
utility. Progressivism focuses on real-world problem solving and individual
development.
 Progressivism is a very student-centered philosophy of education. Rooted in
pragmatism, the educational focus of progressivism is on engaging students in
real-world problem- solving activities in a democratic and cooperative learning
environment (Webb et. al., 2010).

 John Dewey (1859-1952) -An American philosopher, psychologist and
educational reformer. His philosophy based on pragmatism. He established
“Laboratory School” in 1896. He was the father of educational psychology.
 He introduces progressive method of teaching. he believed that book
learning was no substitute for actually doing things.
 CHARACTERISTICS OF PROGRESSIVISM

Educational PROGRESSIVISM

 To develop the personality of an individual through providing a democratic

emotional, social and intellectual aspects of the individual.

Progressivism and curriculum

 It should be based on the actual giving environment to the child. It must reflect
his daily life.
 The curriculum is interdisciplinary in nature.
 Books and subject matter were part of the learning process rather than sources
of ultimate knowledge.
 Curriculum is based on students' interests, involves the application of human
problems and affairs.
 It uses the life experience approach to fit the student for future social action.
 Curriculum is based on a specific group of students.

Curriculum includes; Political; moral; social; vocational; intellectual;

mathematics; general science, languages; integration of experiences.
Progressivism and method of teaching
Project method- active participation of the pupils in learning. 
Socialized method- to bring all the individual into a group system of interaction.
Conferences, Demonstration, Group work, Role play, Debates, Inquiry,
Discussion, Planning and participation in the activities.
Progressivists believe that the education should focus on the child rather than the
subject matter. The student’s interests are important, as is integration of thinking,
feeling, and doing. Learners should be active and learn to solve problems by
experimenting and reflecting on their experience. School should help the students
develop personal and social values so that they can become thoughtful, productive,
citizen. because society is always changing, new ideas are important to make the
future better than the past.
