Unit Load Method for Joint Displacements

The document contains 14 questions regarding the use of virtual work principles to calculate displacements and rotations in truss structures. Various trusses are shown under different loading conditions, and questions ask to determine displacements of specific joints by considering internal forces and member distortions. Parameters like member areas, moduli of elasticity, applied loads, and temperature changes are provided.

Demonstration 3 Questions

Question 1:

For the truss shown below (all dimensions in meter), use the principle of virtual work to calculate the
horizontal displacement of B and the vertical displacement of C.
E = 2 00 GPa
A = 500 mm2

The internal forces due to the loading are:

NAB= 10 kN (T)
NBC= 0
NAC= 10 2 kN (C)
NDC= 10 2 kN (T)
NDE= 20 kN (T)
NCE= 20 2 kN (C)

Question 2:

Apply the principle of virtual work to calculate the horizontal displacement at C. Ignore the effect of
internal axial actions when calculating the work.

D

Question 3:

How much are points F and C getting closer to each other under the applied load? Consider the effect of
axial loads only in the diagonal members.

Question 4:
In the truss the bars undergo distortions of
e1 = ‐0.25 mm
e2 = +5.20 mm
e3 = ‐3.25 mm
e4 = ‐1.0 mm
e5 = +3.25 mm
By the method of virtual forces find
(i) The horizontal displacement of point C
(ii) The horizontal displacement of point B.
Question 5:
Using the principle of virtual forces, for the truss shown below:
a) Calculate horizontal displacement of joint B;
b) Calculate horizontal displacement of support D.

E = 2 ×105 MPa
A1-4 = 3000 mm2
A5 = 4000 mm2

Question 6:
(i) For the truss shown calculate horizontal and vertical displacement of point D by using The Method of
Virtual Work.
(ii) If the member CD is initially 5 mm short, find the horizontal and vertical displacement of joint D.

E = 2 ×105 MPa
A1,3,4 = 100 mm2
A2,5 = 150 mm2
Question 7:
(i) Calculate horizontal displacement of joint A;
(ii) Calculate horizontal displacement of support B.
(iii) If the temperature of bar CD is increased by 70oC, calculate by how much this would change the
displacement obtained in (i). Assume α = 12e‐6.

E = 2 ×108 kPa
A1-9 = 300×10-6 m2

Question 8:
Determine the vertical displacement of joint B. Use the method of virtual work.

E = 2 ×108 kPa
A = 400×10-6 m2

E = 2 ×105 MPa
A1-8 = 100×10-6 m2
Question 9:
Determine the vertical displacement of joint C of the truss. Use the method of virtual work.

E = 2 ×108 kPa
A = 300×10-6 m2
