NURSING INFORMATICS (NuCM 110)
Activity No. 3
The American Nurses Association describes nursing informatics as “the specialty
that integrates nursing science with multiple information and analytical sciences to
identify, define, manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in
nursing practice.” In the field of education, nursing informatics supports virtual teaching
and learning, assessment, and analytics associated with educational outcomes. The
connection between educators and learners is greatly aided by NI, which embraces the
gaps created by every technology exposure and works with the educational system to
improve students' learning outcomes. Students may benefit from using informatics
technology in the classroom by being able to undertake research projects, analyze data,
find solutions to issues, design products, and evaluate their own work. Also, it can
motivate students to engage in active learning and express high expectations.
In the field of nursing research, nursing informatics uses evidence-based clinical
best practices by researching clinical nursing practices outside of their own
experiences, finding evidence to prove which clinical practices are best, influencing the
design of clinical systems to support and promote the best evidence-based practices
and workflows, and training other nurses to use clinical IT systems. Nursing research
helps nurses combine their analytical and medical expertise to provide their patients
with the highest quality care through clinical studies.
Nursing informatics has bigger implications in our society today. For example, in
education, the new Filipino-friendly LMS in our country will help the students have
access to education through a virtual setting, engage in data analysis and research
projects, and assess their own work. In the healthcare system, nursing informatics helps
the patient-nurse interaction through a TeleNurse or TeleHealth Nurse system. With
this, both the patient and nurse can send information through apps or websites, and the
nurses can regularly monitor specific patient conditions through remote monitoring.
Also, e-health educational programs can be done, which will make people aware of
disease management and increase coordination with the health care professional team.
Lastly, another example is the Patient E-Portals, wherein this will secure online
websites that give patients 24-hour access to their test results, medication records, and
other personal health information. These examples generally have bigger implications
for a patient’s self-efficacy to improve, maintain, and control their personal health. And
also cost-effective in terms of both resources and time.
