The question What is the question that you are being asked to solve?
This
should highlight what the output of your model needs to be.
Known What information do you have that is known? This is a starting
point for the inputs to your model
Assumptions The assumptions constrain your model, what assumptions are
you introducing? Note you will often identify more assumptions
when you check and explore your solution
Diagram Draw a diagram of how the different components of your model
interact. Start to introduce notation (don’t forget to identify the
dimensions)
Model Write your mathematical model. Identify any additional notation
you have introduced.
Dimensions Confirm that your model is dimensionally consistent.
consistent?
Plan How will you approach solving this model? Is it similar to other
models? Will you look at analytical or numerical approaches?
Solution Solve the model.
Check Is your answer sensible? Does it answer the question you
identified? If not – what changes do you need to make?
Conclusions What inferences can you draw from your solution? Explore the
results and write an answer to the question you identified.
