Fluid Mechanics for Chemical Engineers

This document contains information for a fluid mechanics course. It lists Muhammad Afifizuddin Bin Rosli and his student ID and group for the CHE413 Fluid Mechanic for Chemical Engineers course taught by Dr. Atikah Bt Kadri. It includes 4 assumptions that describe the fluid system and asks to determine the volumetric flow rate of water in a pipe. It also lists the advantages and disadvantages of different flow measurement devices including Venturimeter, Orifice meter, and Pitot tube.

a) 4 assumptions that describe the system.

1) Fluid is ideal,frictionless flow
2) Fluid is steady flow :d/dt =0
3) No shaft work :Wpump = Wturbine = 0
4) No heat transfer

b) Determine the volumetric flow rate of water in pipe

c) Advantage and disadvantage for each flow measurement devices

Devices Advantages Disadvantages

 High pressure recovery, low  Size,as well as cost is high
Venturimeter permanent pressure drop  Difficult to inspection due to its
 High coefficient of discharge construction
 Can be installed in any direction  Nonlinear
horizontal, vertical and inclined  Maintenance is not easy
 Cannot use in pipe that has small
diameter(70mm)
 Small plates and easy to install or  Requires homogeneous fluid
Orifice meter remove  Requires the flow of axial velocity
 Easily maintained vectors
 Simple construction  Cause a pressure drop in the fluid
 Suitable for most gases and liquids  Accuracy affected by
density,pressure and the viscosity of
the fluid
 Causes very less pressure loss  Any foreign material in flow can
Pitot tube  No moving part which helps in change the accurate reading
minimizing frictional loses  Not very accurate
 Small in size and low in cost  Has low sensitivity
 Easy to install and remove  Cannot be used with dirty fluid
