Device Driver
A device driver is a particular form of software application that is designed
to enable interaction with hardware devices. Without the required device driver,
the corresponding hardware device fails to work.
A device driver usually communicates with the hardware by means of the
communications subsystem or computer bus to which the hardware is
connected. Device drivers are operating system-specific and hardware-
dependent. A device driver acts as a translator between the hardware device and
the programs or operating systems that use it.
A device driver may also be called a software driver.
Manually update drivers in Windows 7
Follow these steps to manually update Windows 7 drivers:
Step 1: Go to the ‘Start’ button and open the Menu option.

Step 2: Right-click ‘This PC’ (name of the computer) and select ‘Properties.
Step 3: Select ‘Device Manager’ .

Step 4: Click the > button to update some drivers.

Step 5: Right Click Update Driver Software > you will get dual options to select
from in order to update your drivers.
Step 6: Select ‘Search automatically for updated driver software’.

The action will re-direct Windows to explore the latest available driver
software for the chosen device in your system and online.
If the Windows is not able to come up with a solution, you will have to
search for the driver software online on the device manufacturer’s website.

However, in case none of the above methods work, you will have to reinstall
the driver.
Manually updating the drivers is a tedious and time-consuming process,
as it requires you to be present for each step, so as to carry forward the
procedure. There are even high chances that you might end up wasting time on
updating the drivers and yet attain no significant results. Another alternative
could be, to download driver update software windows 7.

Installing software on your Windows PC

Your computer allows you to do some really amazing things. Digital photo
editing, sophisticated computer gaming, video streaming—all of these things are
possible because of different types of software. Developers are always creating
new software applications, which allow you to do even more with your computer.

Installing from a CD-ROM

From the mid-1990s through the late 2000s, the most common way to get
new software was to purchase a CD-ROM. You could then insert the disc, and
the computer would walk you through the installation.
Now, almost all software has moved away from this model. Many new
computers no longer include a CD-ROM for this reason. However, if you do need
to install software from a CD-ROM, simply insert the disc into your computer,
then follow the instructions.

Installing software from the Web

Today, the most common way to get new software is to download it from
the Internet. Applications like Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop can now
be purchased and downloaded right to your computer. You can also install free
software this way. For example, if you wanted to install the Google Chrome web
browser, you can visit this page and click the Download button.
The installation file will be saved to your computer in .exe format.
Pronounced dot e-x-e, this is the standard extension for installation files on
Windows computers. You can follow the steps below to install an application
from an .exe file.
Locate and download an .exe file.

Locate and double-click the .exe file. (It will usually be in your Downloads folder.)

A dialog box will appear. Follow the instructions to install the software.
The software will be installed. You can now open the application from the Start menu
(Windows 7) or the Start Screen (Windows 8).

Tips for finding software

In our experience, the easiest way to find new software is to search the Web. For
example, if you were looking for a way to edit some personal photos on your computer, you
could run a Google search for free photo-editing software. If you're not exactly sure what kind
of software you're looking for, try describing the tasks you want to complete. For example, if
you wanted a way to create to-do lists and organize your appointments, you might search for
something like free calendar organizer software.
The Windows Store
If you're using Windows 8, you can download and install software from the Windows
Store. The Windows Store is meant to simplify the process of locating and installing software
from third-party developers—when you find an app in the Windows store, you won't have to
do any extra work to install it.
Uninstalling software from your Windows PC
If you find that you no longer use an application, you can uninstall the software to remove
it from your computer. This is a good way to clear up space on your hard drive and keep your
computer free of clutter.

1. Open the Control Panel.

2. Select Uninstall a program (in the Programs category).

3. Select the desired application, then click Uninstall.

4. Confirm the uninstallation.

That's it! The program will be removed from your computer

Lesson Update Software and Antivirus
2 Software

You’re probably no stranger to those little pop-up windows. They tell you
software updates are available for your computer, laptop, tablet, or mobile
device.
You might be tempted to click on that “Remind me later” button. Don’t do
it. Or, at least don’t put off updating your software for long. Software updates
are important to your digital safety and cyber security. The sooner you update,
the sooner you’ll feel confident your device is more secure — until the next
update reminder.
Why are software updates so important? There are a lot of reasons. Here
are 5 that show why it’s important to update software regularly.

What’s In

In the past lesson you learn about Install application by CD-ROM, Web and
Store. In this lesson you will learn about updating software and importance of
antivirus.
What’s New

What is It

Importance in Updating Operating Systems

1. Software updates do a lot of things

Software updates offer plenty of benefits. It’s all about revisions. These
might include repairing security holes that have been discovered and fixing or
removing computer bugs. Updates can add new features to your devices and
remove outdated ones.
While you’re at it, it’s a good idea to make sure your operating system is
running the latest version.
2. Updates help patch security flaws
Hackers love security flaws, also known as software vulnerabilities. A
software vulnerability is a security hole or weakness found in a software
program or operating system. Hackers can take advantage of the weakness by
writing code to target the vulnerability. The code is packaged into malware —
short for malicious software.
An exploit sometimes can infect your computer with no action on your
part other than viewing a rogue website, opening a compromised message, or
playing infected media.
What happens next? The malware can steal data saved on your device or
allow the attacker to gain control over your computer and encrypt your files.
Software updates often include software patches. They cover the security holes
to keep hackers out.

3. Software updates help protect your data

You probably keep a lot of documents and personal information on your
devices. Your personally identifiable information — from emails to bank account
information — is valuable to cybercriminals.
They can use it to commit crimes in your name or sell it on the dark web
to enable others to commit crimes. If it’s a ransomware attack, they might
encrypt your data. You might have to pay a ransom for an encryption key to get
it back. Or, worse, you might pay a ransom and not get it back.
Updating your software and operating systems helps keep hackers out.

4. Stop spreading to another device

OK, cyber security is mostly about you, but you’ve got other people to think
about, too. If your device gets a virus, you could pass it on to your friends,
family, and business associates. That’s why you want to keep your software and
systems updated.
A trusted security program such as Norton 360TM can help keep your
devices secure. And that can potentially help all those people you interact with
online. But it’s also important to know anti-virus protection isn’t enough to
protect your devices against all cyberthreats
5. Add new features and improve existing ones.
Updates not only patch security holes, they can also add new features and
improve existing ones. You don’t want to fall behind the times, right?
In that way, software updates really are all about you. Your software
program may get a new shot of stability — no more crashing. Or an update
might boost program performance — more speed. You deserve no less.
You could ignore those reminders to update your software, but you might
be missing out on a lot, starting with your cyber security.

To update your Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 Operating System:

1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button in the lower-left
corner. In the search box, type Update, and then, in the list of results,
click either Windows Update or Check for updates
2. Click the Check for updates button and then wait while Windows looks
for the latest updates for your computer
3. If you see a message telling you that important updates are available, or
telling you to review important updates, click the message to view and
select the important updates to download or install
4. In the list, click the important updates for more information. Select the
checkboxes for any updates that you want to install, and then click OK
5. Click Install updates

Note: It is important that you do not shut your computer off or allow it to run out
of battery during the update process. Doing so can cause a corruption of the
operating system, which can often only be fixed by reformatting the computer.
If you are experiencing issues updating your computer, please review this
Windows update troubleshooting guide from Microsoft.
For information on Microsoft Windows Automatic Updates, visit Microsoft's
Update site.
What is Antivirus Software?
Antivirus software is a program or set of programs that are designed to
prevent, search for, detect, and remove software viruses, and other malicious
software like worms, trojans, adware, and more.

Why Do I Need Antivirus Software?

These antivirus tools are critical for users to have installed and up-
todate because a computer without antivirus software protection will be
infected within minutes of connecting to the internet. The bombardment is
constant, which means antivirus companies have to update their detection
tools regularly to deal with the more than 60,000 new pieces of malware
created daily.
Hackers are targeting remote workers. Learn how to stay safe while out
of the office in our Work from Home Playbook.
Today's malware (an umbrella term that encompasses computer
viruses) changes appearance quickly to avoid detection by older,
definitionbased antivirus software. Viruses can be programmed to cause
damage to your device, prevent a user from accessing data, or to take control
of your computer.

What Does AntiVirus Software Do?

Several different companies build antivirus software and what each offer
can vary but all perform some essential functions:

• Scan specific files or directories for any malware or known malicious

patterns
• Allow you to schedule scans to automatically run for you
• Allow you to initiate a scan of a particular file or your entire computer, or
of a CD or flash drive at any time.
• Remove any malicious code detected –sometimes you will be notified of
an infection and asked if you want to clean the file, other programs will
automatically do this behind the scenes.
• Show you the ‘health’ of your computer
Always be sure you have the best, up-to-date security software installed to
protect your computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones.

What Are the Benefits of Antivirus Software?

Antivirus solutions protect more than just laptops, office computers,
smartphones and tablets. They protect precious memories, music and photo
libraries, and important documents from destruction by malware. Make sure
your protection is up to the challenge of defending against the latest threats.
Modern antivirus solutions are capable of:

• Detecting, blocking, and removing viruses, malware, and ransomware

• Preventing identity theft and block phishing and fraud
• Warning about dangerous websites and links before you click
• Scanning the Dark Web to find if an email address has been
compromised
• Keeping online accounts protected with secure password encryption
• Providing simple training to teach you and your family how to be even
safer online
• Tuning up your computer to keep it running smoothly, just like new

How Does Antivirus Software Work?

Many antivirus software programs still download malware definitions
straight to your device and scan your files in search of matches. But since,
as we mentioned, most malware regularly morphs in appearance to avoid
detection, Webroot works differently. Instead of storing examples of
recognized malware on your device, it stores malware definitions in the
cloud. This allows us to take up less space, scan faster, and maintain a
more robust threat library.
Free vs Paid Antivirus Software
From banking to baby photos, so much of our business and personal
data live on our devices. If it were stored physically, paying for a security
solution would be a no-brainer. Unfortunately, we often expect our online
data to remain secure without lifting a finger or spending a cent. Companies
claiming to do it for free are partly responsible for the confusion, to be sure.
But consumers should insist on features like identity theft protection, mobile
security, and support options when it comes to their data security, too—
features usually lacking with free solutions.

What is It

TESTING INSTALLED EQUIPMENT / DEVICES (COMPONENTS)

As a computer technician, you may need a decent understanding of the
health and safety regulations from ahead of time in your career, in order that
you understand the great practices demanded by law. Specifically, you need to:
✓ report any accidents
✓ take charge of your own health and safety when moving heavy
components
✓ not cause any electrical hazards
✓ ensure that workstations meet safety requirements.

You need to stick to health and safety regulations as they're going to help
to protect you and others and can avoid any unnecessary proceeding for
reckless and unsafe working practices. If you identify any health and safety
problems, you ought to tell your line manager or the health and safety
representative immediately.
Diagnostic tools are used to test and diagnose equipment.
Diagnostic tools include the following:

Digital multimeter is a device that can take many types of

measurements. It tests the integrity of circuits and the quality
of electricity in computer components. A digital multimeter
displays the information on an LCD or LED.

A loopback adapter, also called a loopback plug, tests the

basic functionality of computer ports. The adapter is specific to
the port that you want to test.

A toner probe is a two-part tool. The toner part is connected to a

cable at one end using specific adapters, such as an RJ-45,
coaxial, or metal clips. The toner generates a tone that travels the
length of the cable. The probe part traces the cable. When the
probe is in near proximity to the cable to which the toner is
attached, the tone can be heard through a speaker in the probe.

Software Tools
Like hardware tools, there are a variety of software tools that can be used
to help technicians pinpoint and troubleshoot problems. Many of these tools
are free and several come with the Windows operating system.

Disk Management Tools

Software tools help diagnose computer and network problems
and determine which computer device is not functioning correctly. A
technician must be able to use a range of software tools to diagnose
problems, maintain hardware, and protect the data stored on a
computer.
You must be able to identify which software to use in different situations.
Disk management tools help detect and correct disk errors, prepare a disk for
data storage, and remove unwanted files.

Format: Prepares a hard drive to store information.

ScanDisk or CHKDSK: Checks the integrity of files and folders on a hard

drive by scanning the file system. These tools might also check the disk
surface for physical errors.

Defragmentation: Optimizes space on a hard drive to allow faster access to

programs and data.

Disk Cleanup: Clears space on a hard drive by searching for files that can
be safely deleted.

System File Checker (SFC): A command-line tool that scans the operating
system critical files and replaces files that are corrupted.

Testing Computer System

The best way to find out what's wrong is to take a proactive approach:
Check under your PC's hood with the following mostly free diagnostic tools, and
see if anything is amiss--before disaster strikes.

Three Major Components of Computer System:

• Hardware- physical parts or components of a computer.

• Software- instructions that tell a computer what to do.
Software comprises the entire set of programs, procedures, and routines
associated with the operation of a computer system,
• Firmware- permanent software programmed into a read-only memory.
Test Your Hardware
Checking your computer hardware and its peripherals
1. Computer Monitor and its peripherals

How to run a Monitor Self-Test.

1. Power off both your computer and the monitor.
2. Disconnect the signal cable from the back of the computer.
3. Power on the monitor.
Note:
Depending on your monitor, While in the Self-Test mode, the monitor's LED
power indicator remains on and the Check Signal Cable figure moves around on
the screen.
If your monitor alternate between 2 boxes Analog and Digital that is normal,
as some monitors supports both Digital and analog signal.
Test Results:
a) If you see any of the above check cable signals, that mean the problem is
not related to your monitor, please check your graphics card.
b) If you see the first figure with one of the colors missing, that means your
monitor requires service.
c) If you are unable to see any of the figures. But the light of the monitor is
on, it means your monitor requires service.

2. Keyboard and Mouse

How to Test a Laptop Keyboard
Testing your computer's keyboard involves more than simply seeing if the
keys work. Opening a word processor and typing a few lines won't really tell you
anything; if all the keys work correctly, there could still be an issue with your
keyboard's device driver that isn't obvious. To successfully test your computer's
keyboard, you need to do so in the Microsoft Windows Device Manager
hardware management utility.
Step 1
Click "Start."
Step 2
Click "Control Panel."
Step 3
Click "System."
Step 4
Click "Open Device Manager."
Step 5
Right-click on the listing for your computer's keyboard. Select the "Scan for
Hardware Changes" option from the menu. The Device Manager will now test
your computer's keyboard. If an "error" icon appears next to the listing, there
is a problem with your computer's keyboard. Right-click the listing for the
device again and select "Properties" for more information about the specifics
of the error.
3. Check the RAM
RAM or Random Access Memory is one
of the most important hardware component
of every computer. It is the small piece of
hardware that experts would really
recommend for an upgrade to boost your
computer’s performance. While you can
check the memory size of your RAM from the
System Properties section of the Control
Panel, testing it is a little bit complicated.

Problems in the RAM can cause “Blue Screen of Death” (BSOD) and can
even prevent your machine from booting up. If you want to test your RAM, you
can use Memtest86+ and again, the test itself isn’t that simple. In order to
perform it, you will need to create a bootable USB or CD with the software
loaded into it since the test itself works upon boot up and it will take over 30
minutes to complete. If you want to really test the RAM of your computer or the
one that you want to purchase, you can simply head to the Memtest86+ website
to read the instructions.

4. Check for Hard Disk Drive Or Solid

State Drive Health
The Hard Disk Drive (HDD) or Solid State
Drive (SSD) contains the operating system that
is installed on your computer and once it gets
some problems, you whole machine may hang
and freeze often or even fail in the long run. It
is therefore important to make your HDD/SSD
in 100% health always.
Checking for HDD/SSD health is
important especially if you are planning to
purchase a used computer since you don’t
really know the current condition of the drive
itself. You can find plenty of tools that can be
used to test the Hard Disk Drive or Solid State
Drive in your computer and if you have an SSD installed, you can use SSDLife
to check your Solid State Drive’s health.

For HDD, you will need to use a separate tool called HDSentinel. This tool
is designed for Hard Disk Drives and helps to identify problems, diagnoses
troubles and repairs disk drive problems before they get worst. To download
this software, you can simply visit the official Hard Disk Sentinel website.
5. Test CPU and GPU
The CPU and GPU are two
very important hardware
components in every computer
that is involved in the main
processing of data, commands
and everything else in between. It
is because of these two hardware
components that you are able to
use Microsoft Office, PowerPoint,
Excel and even open your favorite
browser. You are also able to play
games because of them so it is
therefore necessary to make sure
that both of these hardware
components are in perfect
condition. To test them, you can
use Furmark.

If you are trying to test a low-end PC that has no dedicated GPU to support
high definition resolutions, you will need
to select 1280 x 720 and if you are testing
a medium to high-end PC with a
GPU/graphics card, choose the
resolutions 1280 x 720 to 1920 x 1080
full HD graphics resolution. If your
screen flickers or is distorted while the
test is running, it is a sign that there is a
problem in the GPU.
To test your machine’s CPU, all you
need to do is open “CPU Burner” the hit
the “Start” button to initiate the test. If
your computer hangs or freezes during
the test, it means that there is problem in
hardware or there is not enough cooling
system for the CPU to work smoothly.

Test Hardware to Prevent Serious Problems

As you can see, there are both online and offline ways in testing your
computer’s hardware and both methods help ensure that your machine is in
good condition. These tests will also help you decide if a pre-loved computer
is worthy to be purchased on not

6. I/O port and devices

• Connection between the I/O port and the peripheral device
• A faulty cable between the I/O port and the peripheral device
• A faulty peripheral device
• Incorrect settings in the System Setup program
• Incorrect settings in the system's configuration files
• Faulty I/O port logic on the system board

7. Power supply Test

USE CAUTION HERE (Though you’d only be shocked with a max of 24 volts)
Plug the power supply into the wall.
Find the big 24-ish pin connector that connects to the motherboard.
Connect the GREEN wire with the adjacent BLACK wire.
The power supply’s fan should start up. If it doesn’t then it’s dead.
If the fan starts up, then it could be the motherboard that’s dead. You can
use a multimeter to check if there is power output from the power supply

Testing Your Software

Check the different software installed in the computer.
1. Operating system

Run live updates for your operating systems to get the latest patches and
protection for your OS.
Run registry scanners to check the OS registry configuration
2. Application Software

Check for live updates

3. Anti-virus software

Run anti-virus program

Check for virus signature updates
Check for spyware updates

Firmware Testing
Firmware is a computer program that is embedded in a hardware device
that provides control, monitoring and data manipulation of engineered products
and systems. The firmware contained devices provides the low-level control
program for the device. Examples of devices containing firmware are embedded
systems, computers, computer peripherals, mobile phones, etc.
Importance of Firmware testing is the certification of firmware system
meets its requirements with respect to functional correctness as well as
performance, operational, and implementational properties. Then to reduce the
risk and improve the performance.
To test the firmware
Check for the correct configuration can accomplish this by configuring the
BIOS in the computer

Error Beep codes

When a PC is first switched on or reset it performs a special diagnostic
test called a POST (Power-On Self Test), to check all components in the PC, the
POST program sends out a signal to each device initializing each device's built-
in self test procedure.

The POST test is a two stage process:

1. First, it will check all the basic components including among other things
the system clock, the processor, RAM, the keyboard controller and the Video
2. After the video has been tested the BIOS will then indicate any errors
encountered by displaying either a numeric code or a text message on the
screen.
When a device fails the first part of the POST, the BIOS will send a series
of beeps from the PC's speaker (internal) to inform the PC user that there is a
problem these beeps are coded allowing the user to diagnose the troublesome
component. When the POST has been completed successfully, the PC will make
a short beep to let the user know everything is as it should be.
