Lesson Objective
• Distinguish between Lyric poems and narrative poems.
WHAT IS POETRY?
Poetry is the collection of words that express
emotion, ideas ,feelings and thoughts.

Poetry has a beat, or rhythm, and sometimes it


rhymes.

It is often written in stanzas and uses imagery


and figurative language to express emotions or
ideas to the reader.
Poetry is the form of writing that uses:

Sound devices

literary devices
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES
OF POETRY?
This term we will focus only on 2 types of
poems:

Lyric poems

Narrative poems
Lyric Poems
Lyric poems are non-narrative, short poems that reveal the speaker’s personal feeling, emotion, mode, state
of mind, expression, thought, attitude and perception.

Characteristics of lyric poems


• Short
• Usually written in 1st person point of view
• Expresses emotion
• These emotions tend to lean toward love, death or loss,
frustration, family and friendship…
• Do NOT tell a story
This is an example of a Lyric poem "I Felt a Funeral in my Brain."
by EMILY DICKINSON I felt a Funeral, in my Brain,
And Mourners to and fro
Kept treading - treading - till it seemed
That Sense was breaking through -
it describes a person who is going And when they all were seated,
insane. A Service, like a

Let’s identify some features of lyric poems And creak across my Soul

• Include sequence of events and characters
• Told by the narrator
• Sometimes include a dialogue
• Can rhyme but don’t have to

He could smell the forest around him.

"Do you think it's time?"
