Honorata “Atang” de la Rama
(January 11, 1902 – July 11, 1991),
Honorata de la Rama-Hernandez commonly
known as “Atang de la rama”
She was a singer and bodabil performer who
became the first Filipina film actress.
she fought for the dominance of the kundiman,
an important Philippine folk song, and the
sarsuela, which is a musical play that focused on
contemporary Filipino

(January 11, 1902 – July 11, 1991),
Filipino artists and audiences consider Atang de
la Rama's vocal and acting talents as responsible
for much of the success of original Filipino
sarsuelas like Dalagang Bukid, and dramas
Veronidia.
For her achievements and contributions to the
art form, she was hailed Queen of the Kundiman
and of the Sarsuela in 1979, at the age of 74.
De la Rama died on July 11, 1991. She was married to National Artist for
Literature, Amado V. Hernandez.
Daisy Avellana ( January 26, 1917 – May 12, 2013 )
Daisy Avallana was a Filipino stage actress and
theater director.
President Joseph Ejercito Estrada honored Daisy
Avellana, as a National Artist of the Philippines
for Theater and Film in 1999.
Her husband was Lamberto Avellana, a film and
stage director who was also named a National
Artist in 1976.

In 1965, she directed a film adaptation of the
play. She also directed the films “Diego Silang”
(1965) and “Walang Sugat” (1971) and she was a
writer and actress, known for A Portrait of the
Artist as Filipino (1965), Pag-asa (1951) and
Sakay (1939)
She was conferred National Artist for Theater in
1999 in recognition of her contribution to
Philippine theater and drama.
Lamberto V. Avallena
( February 12, 1915 – April 25, 1991 )
Lamberto V. Avallena was a prominent Filipino
film and stage director. Despite considerable
budgetary limitations that hampered the post-
war Filipino film industry.
Avellana's films such as Anak Dalita and Badjao
attained international acclaim.
In 1976, Avellana was named by President
Ferdinand Marcos as the first National Artist of
the Philippines for Film.
Lamberto V. Avallena
( February 12, 1915 – April 25, 1991 )
Avellana made his film debut with Sakay in
1939.
Avellana directed more than 70 films in a career
that spanned six decades.
On March 27, 1976 Lamberto Vera Avellana was
conferred the National Artist Award for Film
and Theater.
Severino Montano
( January 3, 1915 – December 12, 1980 )
Born in Laoag, Ilocos Norte.
Was a playwright, director, actor and theater
organizer with an output of one novel, 150
poems and 50 plays in his 65-year lifetime.
Through the foundation of the Arena Theater,
Montano institutionalized “legitimate theater”
in the Philippines. Considered one of the Titans
of Philippine Theater.
Montano organized the Arena Theater “to bring
drama to the masses”.
Severino Montano
( January 3, 1915 – December 12, 1980 )
His awards include the Kalinangan Award
from the city of Manila (1968), the Presidential
Award for Merit in Drama and Theater (1961),
the Citizen's Committee for Mass Media Award
(1967 and 1968), the Pamulinawen Award
(1981), and the National Artist Award (2001).
The last two awards were given posthumously.
He was awarded the title National Artist of the
Philippines for theatre posthumously in 2001.
Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero
( January 22, 1910 – April 28, 1995 )
Guerrero was born in Ermita, Manila.
Was a Filipino playwright, director, teacher
and theater artist.
He wrote over 100 plays, 41 of which have been
published. His unpublished plays have either
been broadcast on the radio or staged in
various parts of the Philippines.
He wrote his first play at the age of 14 in Spanish, entitled No Todo Es
Risa. This play was produced at the Ateneo de Manila University when
he was 15.
Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero
( January 22, 1910 – April 28, 1995 )
He is the first Filipino to have a theater named
after him within his lifetime, the Wilfrido Ma.

Philippine
Guerrero wrote some of his most popular
comedies, "Movie Artists," "Basketball Fight,"
and "Wanted: A Chaperone."
In 1997, Guerrero was posthumously distinguished as a National Artist
for Philippine Theatre and received three national awards: the Rizal
Pro-Patria Award in 1961, the Araw ng Maynila Award in 1969, and
the Republic Cultural Heritage Award in 1972.
