(5) EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

A keyline is a boundary line in graphic design that separates color and monochrome areas, or
different colored portions of printing, on a given page or printed work. The line itself, which is commonly a
black (or other dark colored) border, creates a space where lighter colors can be printed with minor
registration variations. Keylines for cropping were often simply specified on original artwork, and then
photos were manually stripped into the area, with the keylines themselves being applied as part of the
process in classic paste-up graphics workflows. When printing something that will be cut out with a die
form, folded, or has perforation lines, keylines are frequently used.
This led the researchers to conduct a study about the Key lime as a Disinfectant that can be used for
Cleaning

(7) REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Disinfectant(Key-lime)
Citrus × aurantiifolia commonly knowns as Key lime is a citrus hybrid (C. hystrix × C. medica)
native to tropical Southeast Asia. It has a spherical fruit, 25–50 mm (1–2 in) in diameter. The
Key lime is usually picked while it is still green, but it becomes yellow when ripe. The Key lime
is smaller, seedier, has higher acidity, stronger aroma, and thinner rind than the Persian
lime (Citrus × latifolia). It is valued for its characteristic flavor. The name comes from its
association with the Florida Keys, where it is best known as the flavoring ingredient in Key lime
pie. It is also known as West Indian lime, bartender's lime, Omani lime, or Mexican lime, the
last classified as a distinct race with a thicker skin and darker green colour. Philippine varieties
have various names, including dayap and bilolo. Wanted to see how Citrus aurantifolia (key
lime) juice and aqueous extracts of Cinnamomum iners (cinnamon) bark and Citrus hystrix
(kaffir lime) leaves affected Pseudomonas aeruginosa and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus
aureus' kinetic growth (MRSA). Spectrophotometry and viable cell counts versus bacterial
growth time were used to quantify antimicrobial action.

(8) METHODOLOGY

Experimental Research Design

The study employs an experimental research design that examines the effect of Key lime as an independent variable on its disinfecting capability, the dependent variable. By using materials such as vinegar, baking soda, and water combined with Key lime, the study aims to determine the cleaning efficacy through qualitative analysis of stains and dirt removal. However, potential limitations include the subjective nature of assessments, lack of control over external variables such as temperature, humidity, and potential bias in evaluating the cleaning effectiveness .

Challenges include variability in natural product composition, which can affect consistency and reliability of cleaning performance. Natural solutions like Key lime may have shorter shelf lives due to microbial degradation and lack standardized efficacy compared to manufactured chemical disinfectants that often have stabilized formulations and broader antimicrobial spectra. Additionally, public perception of natural products as less effective, potential residue issues related to high acidity, and safety concerns regarding material compatibility pose further obstacles to widespread adoption .

The study's findings can contribute to environmental conservation efforts by offering a natural and possibly biodegradable alternative to chemical disinfectants, reducing chemical pollution and packaging waste. Moreover, if the Key lime disinfectant proves effective, it may encourage the use of locally sourced, renewable agricultural products, thus promoting sustainable practices. Additionally, the study mentions recycling waste paper into useful items, demonstrating a holistic approach to environmental sustainability .

The study raises concerns about potential side effects by questioning whether the disinfectant causes any damage or wear to sink surfaces. Although not deeply explored, it hints at examining the long-term impact of acidic substances like Key lime on materials commonly used in sinks, such as stainless steel or ceramic. However, more rigorous testing and material compatibility tests would be necessary to fully understand any adverse effects and ensure the practicality of daily use .

The study innovates by proposing the use of Key lime in a homemade cleaning solution, highlighting the integration of readily available household items like vinegar and baking soda. Practical implementation could involve creating standardized formulations and instructions for safe and effective home use. By promoting do-it-yourself cleaning solutions, this innovation encourages sustainable practices and reduces reliance on chemical products, potentially paving the way for community workshops or instructional materials that support self-made cleaning agents .

Key lime has a higher acidity, stronger aroma, and thinner rind compared to other citrus fruits like the Persian lime. These attributes might enhance its disinfecting potential compared to lemons, which share similar uses but differ slightly in chemical composition and essential oil profiles. While both lemons and Key limes have antifungal and antibacterial properties, the unique flavor profile and size of Key lime may provide distinct benefits and drawbacks, such as potentially quicker efficacy but also faster degradation .

Key lime, scientifically known as Citrus × aurantiifolia, is characterized by its high acidity, strong aroma, and higher seed content compared to other limes, which could contribute to its use as a disinfectant. The acidity of Key lime can disrupt the microbial cell membranes, providing cleaning properties. Its essential oils have antimicrobial properties, potentially making it effective against bacteria like Pseudomonas aeruginosa and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus .

The study leverages the principles of acidity and essential oil antimicrobial activity. The Key lime's high acidity can potentially disrupt microbial cell structures, and its essential oils might have organic compounds that offer antibacterial properties. The study's framework also identifies variables like vinegar and baking soda to enhance cleaning efficacy, employing a basic scientific approach to test hypotheses about natural cleaning agents. The integration of these elements into an experimental design forms the scientific basis for the disinfectant's potential .

The study employed qualitative observation methods to evaluate the cleaning effectiveness of the Key lime disinfectant. This involved applying the solution to both stains and dirt on surfaces, followed by visual inspection of the areas before and after application. While this provides some insight, the reliance on subjective observation without precise measurement devices or quantitative microbial analysis limits the accuracy and repeatability of the results. Improvement could be achieved by incorporating microbial growth assays or spectroscopy methods .

Commercializing Key lime-based disinfectants would require consideration of factors such as cost-benefit analysis, supply chain logistics, consumer acceptance, and market competition with established brands. Scalability of production is vital, as are stability tests to ensure long shelf life. Regulatory compliance with health and safety standards is crucial, along with addressing labeling requirements for allergens or safety warnings. Moreover, the environmental impact of packaging should be assessed to align with eco-friendly branding .
