Give your understanding of job satisfaction and employee engagement, discuss/describe


why each is important in organizational settings? (Note: in addition to your text and class
discussions, additional resources that might be useful are listed following the questions.)

Answer:
The given case is about the Spa and hair salon which provides the services of wide variety of spa
treatments including full body massages, body scrubs and wraps, European facials, specialty
manicures pedicures, skin treatments, waxing, and complete varieties chemical services for the
hair. Bella’s has been a fairly successful enterprise with good turnovers and profit.
Unfortunately, now it is facing a tough time.

As per the question, the importance of job satisfaction and employee engagement in an
organization is further discussed. Job satisfaction is defined as the level of contentment
employees feel with their job. This goes beyond their daily duties to cover satisfaction with team
members/managers, satisfaction with organizational policies, and the impact of their job on
employees’ personal lives. And employee engagement refers to the emotional commitment that
the employee has to the organization and its goal. Employee engagement is the extent to which
employees feel passionate about their jobs, are committed to the organization, and put
discretionary effort into their work.

Job satisfaction and employee engagement in the organizational setting are important because of
the following reasons:
1. Job satisfaction is utmost importance for employees to remain happy and also deliver
their level best. Satisfied employees are the ones who are extremely loyal towards their
organization and stick to it even in the worst scenario. Whereas employee engagement
helps enable the organization to deliver a superior performance and to gain a competitive
advantage.

2. Job satisfaction helps the individuals to hardly think of leaving their current jobs. It in a
way is essential for employee retention. Similarly, engaged employees make additional
effort, learn more, and faster, and are more creative.

3. Satisfied employees tend to adjust more and handle pressure with ease as compared to
frustrated ones. Employees who are not satisfied with their jobs would find a problem in
every small thing and be too rigid. And engaged employees concentrate on the goals of
your organization and on the results that you as an organization expect from them. They
have the feeling that they really can contribute to the success of your organization and
that all their abilities are being utilized.
Question 2:

Discuss/offer insights regarding the results of the employee survey. As you study the
results, what stands out? What conclusions can you draw?

Answer:

On the basis of employee survey, following insights can be drawn from the give case:
1. Managers as well as other employees are not satisfied from the management tactics of the
owner.

2. Employees are satisfied with their co-workers. The case study states the major cause of
employee dissatisfaction was illa’s management. Thus, it can be inferred that the
coordination among the employees is not disturbed and they are working as a team.

3. Illa is not fit for making operational decisions as she is inefficiency in managing the task
and that has been a major factor in employee dissatisfaction.

4. There is a need of decentralization. The managers at various levels must be involved


more in decision making process.

Question 3:

Offer general suggestions/recommendations to Kris Jenkins regarding how to improve


satisfaction and employee engagement of Bella’s workforce. Be sure to distinguish among
jobs when making these suggestions and recommendations.

Answer:

Some of the suggestions and recommendations to Kris Jenkins to improve satisfaction and
employee engagement of Bella’s workforce are as follows:

 Giving promotional opportunities: The case study describes that the employees were
leaving because of lack of motivation. Giving promotional opportunities at workplace
like promotion on the basis of output or experience can motivate the employees.

 Improving incentives: This along with the promotions will help to motivate the
employers as monetary benefits are something that any employees like.

 Timely rewards: The management can decide on providing rewards to those employees
who stand out or who perform well. This will give them a sense of recognition at
workplace which will provide job satisfaction to them.
Question 4:

Evaluate Kris Jenkin's decision to accept the general Managers position. Given the
information available, did she make the right decision? Why or Why not?

Answer:

In my opinion, her decision to accept the GM post was right because of the following reasons:

 This gives her confidence and job satisfaction as the most if the employees’ dream in job
is to make on his/her own decision. In this case, kris getting the GM post at Bella’s with
total authority on the operational task and decisions.

 She will be able to attain valuable experience in making executive decisions which she is
craving for. She can learn on the job and can bring up the company by herself which is a
huge credit for anyone in their resume.

 The current situation calls for employee’s satisfaction. The employees will be more open
to a GM who is good with them and who understands them. As kris is someone who has
valuable experience in dealing with employees.

 Finally, She wants to be the owner of a salon with vision and objectives almost identical
to illa’s views. So, she can learn from the experiences of Illa and Lynn as well which will
ultimately help in future with her salon.
