his personal geniality and individual concern for people while functioning as an efficacious
leader.
1. Enumerate all the characteristics and attributes of such person, who has become
exceptional at work with on account of his quality and personality. List out the qualities and
characteristics that triggers his personal efficacy and social adeptness apart from leadership
effectiveness.
Narendra Modi
Narendra Damodardas Modi was born 17 September 1950. He is an Indian politician serving as the 14th and
current prime minister of India since 2014. He was the chief minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014 and is
the Member of Parliament for Varanasi. Modi is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and
its National Democratic Alliance (NDA). He is also a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS),
a Hindu nationalist volunteer organisation. He is the first prime minister born after India's independence in
1947, the second non-Congress one to win two consecutive terms after Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the first
from outside the Congress to win both terms with a majority in the Lok Sabha.
Born and raised in Vadnagar, a small town in northeastern Gujarat, Modi completed his secondary education
there, and is said to have helped his father sell tea at the local railway station. He was introduced to the RSS
at age eight. Modi left home at age 18 soon after his marriage to Jashodaben Chimanlal Modi, whom he
abandoned and publicly acknowledged as his wife many decades later. Modi has asserted that he travelled
around India for two years, visiting a number of religious centres. Upon his return to Gujarat in 1971, he
became a full-time worker for the RSS. During the state of emergency imposed across the country in 1975,
Modi went into hiding. The RSS assigned him to the BJP in 1985 and he held several positions within the
party hierarchy until 2001, rising to the rank of general secretary.
Modi was appointed Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001 due to Keshubhai Patel's failing health and poor
public image following the earthquake in Bhuj. Modi was elected to the legislative assembly soon after. His
administration has been considered complicit in the 2002 Gujarat riots, or otherwise criticised for its
handling of it. A Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team found no evidence to initiate
prosecution proceedings against Modi personally. His policies as chief minister, credited with encouraging
economic growth, have received praise. His administration has been criticised for failing to significantly
improve health, poverty and education indices in the state.
Modi led the BJP in the 2014 general election which gave the party a majority in the Indian lower house of
parliament, the Lok Sabha, the first time for any single party since 1984. Modi's administration has tried to
raise foreign direct investment in the Indian economy and reduced spending on healthcare and social welfare
programmes. Modi has attempted to improve efficiency in the bureaucracy; he has centralised power by
abolishing the Planning Commission. He began a high-profile sanitation campaign, initiated a
controversial demonetisation of high-denomination banknotes and weakened or abolished environmental
and labour laws.
Under Modi's tenure, India has experienced democratic backsliding. Following his party's victory in
the 2019 general election, his administration revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. His
administration also introduced the Citizenship Amendment Act, which resulted in widespread
protests across the country. Described as engineering a political realignment towards right-wing politics,
Modi remains a figure of controversy domestically and internationally over his Hindu nationalist beliefs and
his alleged role during the 2002 Gujarat riots, cited as evidence of an exclusionary social agenda.
Qualities
Act confidently: This quality played a vital role in the leadership, without this the leadership cannot exist,
and the name of the quality is confidence. Narendra Modi unmistakably shows his trust in his political
profession. He is confident that he can win the general political race and spotlight on disposing of
corruption, played on his picture as a government official who made a high GDP development rate in
Gujarat and depicts himself as an individual who could carry improvement to India.
It was Modi’s solid confidence level that won him the political race and turned him into the Prime Minister
of the nation. We can adopt this quality in our daily life by remaining positive in every situation of our life.
It is the best key to attain confidence in your life.
Visionary: Another leadership quality you can gain from Modi is his visionary authority style. Under
Modi’s organization, the Indian GDP developed enormously and making it the world’s quickest developing
huge economy, at a rate higher than China. In monetary terms, Modi has a dream of making India a
worldwide assembling center point by presenting the “Make in India” activity to urge outside organizations
to make items in the nation. Other than that, it is additionally some portion of Modi’s arrangement to
improve the general open neatness in India.
He has propelled the “Perfect India” crusade that expects to wipe out open poop inside five years. A large
number of toilets have been developed in provincial regions to urge individuals to utilize them. The
administration has the arrangement to develop 60 million toilets by 2019. To become the leader of the
organization you should have this quality. You can attain this quality in your day-to-day life by balancing
your vision with the action. You should develop the ability to bring things together and relate them to the
real world.
Express intense Enthusiasm: one of the most significant leadership characteristics one can gain from
Modi is his extreme energy and eagerness for his work. He adores serving his nation so much that he goes
through 18 hours consistently busy working. This is no doubt a significant quality that is generally shared by
all the leaders on the planet. Bill Gates was otherwise called an extremely dedicated man when he was
youthful. He said this during a meeting, “I never took a vacation day in my twenties. The best way to attain
enthusiasm in day-to-day life by surrounding yourself with enthusiastic peoples and perform random acts of
kindness.
A Powerful Public Speaker: Since the time he was youthful, Modi has demonstrated his splendid ability
out in the open talking. Modi had an early present for a talk in discussions, and this was noted by his
educators and students. He is an incredible open speaker who can address the colossal group confidently.
Obviously, being the leader of a nation, Modi needs to have a remarkable aptitude out in the open talking.
Also, the equivalent goes for you. If you need to be an innovator in your association, you should have the
option to talk with confidence and act as a leader.
Open talking ability is significant because the correspondence is the foundation of our general public.
What’s more, as a leader, the capacity to talk with appeal permits you to prevail upon the group, to inspire
and impact individuals, and to show your ability as a leader. To become a good speaker, you should not
memorize your own lines. You should have your full focus on serving your audience.
Understand the people: If you need to be an extraordinary leader, you have to comprehend the
individuals. In business, you have to comprehend your group and your client. It’s absolutely impossible for
you can fabricate an effective business without realizing what your group and your clients need. Modi
consistently knows this. Also, this is how he figured out how to win the trust of the individuals of India and
subsequently, was chosen as the Prime Minister of the nation.
During his residency as a boss priest in the territory of Gujarat, the GDP development pace of the state took
off to an incentive over that of the nation overall. What’s more, during Modi’s organization, Gujarat beat the
World Bank’s “simplicity of working together” rankings among all other Indian states. Modi comprehends
what individuals need.
He realizes that the best way to win the political race is to win the individuals’ hearts. What’s more, to do
that, he needs to figure out how to be an extraordinary leader and to serve his nation in a superior manner,
which he did. To get this quality of understanding in your daily life you should not make assumptions about
the person. You should develop the quality of empathy in your life to understand people in a better way.
Lead with courage: In Modi’s initial political profession when India experienced a highly sensitive
situation, he had to go underground in Gujarat and frequently traveled in disguise to avoid being caught. He
was also involved in distributing pamphlets opposing the government and organizing demonstrations. He
was even compelled to move in camouflage when dressing as a priest, and once as a Sikh. This is the
fortitude you need to have concerning being a genuine leader. There will be a ton of times when you should
remove dangers or run because of a predicament, yet to be a genuine leader, you should figure out how to be
valiant in dealing with these conditions.
Helen Keller has an incredible statement, “Nothing wandered, nothing picked up.” You should set out to be
the first to make the move and be eager to be called. Being a leader isn’t simple. You should have the
fortitude when everything else is self-destructing. What’s more, more significantly, you have to relinquish
your customary range of familiarity to go further. Recollect this, “You can’t find new seas except if you
have the mental fortitude to dismiss the shore”.
You can attain this quality in your daily life by reminding yourself regularly that fear can harm you, they are
just like chemicals. The best trick to increase your courage is to embrace your fear and let it go.
2. Assume that you would be appraised and rated by your associates or colleagues on the same
qualities and attributes that are discerned and determined above. Estimate the degree to
which you would be rated in comparison on the same parameters, i.e., how close do you stand
in relation to the person you identified.
Comparison
Act Confidently: I was the captain of my college football team and every time I have made decision for the
team, I have made them with full confidence on myself. Even pursuing MBA has also given and boosted
more confidence in me as we have to present our ideas regarding cases and assignments on daily basis in
class.
Visionary: I can say that I hold this quality because I have plans for my future and I am continuously
working on that, as one of my plans was to pursue MBA from IIM and now, I am successfully pursuing that
and hopefully with this quality and determinacy I will continue executing my plans.
Understand The People: I am very much open with people and love interacting and understanding
people, I try to understand the situation that someone is facing and then try to help him or try to resolve
his/her problem if I can. This is also because I love helping others. Example: Yesterday we were supposed
to edit and update our CV and I completely edited the resume of my 2 friends working till 4:30 am.
Q2. The practice of revisiting a past distressing event and reliving the emotions enables us
to discover and understand the pattern of our emotional reactions. It is a revelation to observe
that our emotional reaction was disproportionately intense in relation to the severity of a
distressing event. Usually, we are unwilling to reconnect with grievous or painful emotions,
but such experiences offer highly valuable insights for our personal development.
1. Identify and focus an agonizing and distressful event or experience (eg: getting fired, not
cracking any exam, or may be breakup etc). For this purpose, you need to confine yourself to a
calm and peaceful place where you will not be disturbed and recall the distressful event that
engulfed you in sorrow or hurt you deeply. List down the kind of emotions you experienced in
the original episode.
Event
In the initials days after my schooling, I took admission in Jiwaji University for my Bachelors and after
spending a span of 3 months in the college I was supposed to provide them the original migration certificate
to apply for the semester exams but due to my negligence I lost my migration certificate and all other
documents while travelling. So that situation was very much stressfull to me as, if was unable to provide
them the documents than I would have not been allowed to apply for exams resulting in wasting my
complete year.
So, during that time I was under great sorrow, fear, anger, hopelessness and stress but still I tried and came
up with an alternative resulting in successfully applying for the exam and saving my year.
2. Scrutinize yourself by questioning whether your emotions that you experienced in the
original episode, were apt and congruous to the entire situation.
I think the emotions I faced during that situation was apt and congruous and anyone instead of me would
also have faced the same emotions as that situation was really hectic and there was negligence from my part
which could have serious repercussions for my future.
3. Elaborate on how that emotion has affected your decision making.
In real time Emotions strongly helps and effect the decision making of particular situations. The emotions
that I holded during that time had somehow helped me in critically thinking for the situation and coming up
with a solution for that. That situation gave me courage and confidence to face serious situations and also
helped me understand that we should not panic and feel hopeless for the issues and situations, rather than we
should calmly think and take decision for the same.
Q3. Gestures often small and momentary in nature but have a profound impact on others.
These gestures are behaviour/acts, which are dependent on one’s sets of assumptions and
values. Assumptions and values are both inherited and learned. Kindly elaborate on how big
lessons in leadership can come from small gesture with the help of 2-3 relevant examples.
Examples
1. example is Ready to Care, an initiative from Home Instead Senior Care that challenges people to
complete weekly care missions. Each activity guides members through various ways to give to senior-
related causes, learn about the aging crisis and issues impacting seniors, and serve seniors through small
actions of kindness.
Most care missions are simple acts, such as opening a door, learning about Alzheimer’s or helping with a
chore. Each week, a new mission is delivered to participants’ phones via text message. Small gestures, like
these simple acts of kindness, can go a long way toward improving a senior’s day.
2. Adam Grant and Francesca Gino looked at what happened to the productivity of university
fundraisers when a senior manager engaged in the small gesture of showing gratitude for their work. The
researchers had the Director of Annual Giving visit the university and perform a seemingly minor deed—he
personally thanked the telephone fundraisers for their efforts. Although perhaps a nice gesture, most people
wouldn’t consider this an example of particularly great or effective leadership. But when the researchers
looked at the number of phone calls the fundraisers placed the following week they found that compared to
those who had not received a thank you, those who had received the Director’s thanks ended up placing a lot
more calls. The simple act of demonstrating gratefulness for people’s work had a major impact on the
employees’ work output.
3. Anna Rice and her colleagues at Western Michigan University ran a study to see what effect a
manager’s praise would have on improving the customer service of employees at a grocery store.
Specifically, they wanted to see if the frequency with which employees smiled at customers, make eye
contact with them, and offered customers appropriate greetings and closings, such as saying “Good
morning” and “Have a nice day,” would change if the manager offered praise for such behavior.
As a first step, the researchers noted that the level of customer service the employees provided was not very
high. Employees offered appropriate greetings only 12 percent of the time and appropriate closings only 8
percent of the time. They then had the store manager clarify the customer service behavior that was expected
of employees and offer them praise by saying things like “Great job on your greeting” or “That was great
customer service” when he caught them performing an appropriate act.
The results were pretty dramatic. Correct greetings rose to 66 percent and correct closing rose to 70 percent.
Even more striking was that when the researchers followed up 48 weeks later, employees were still
performing correct greetings 70 percent of the time, and proper closings 77 percent of the time. The lesson
seems clear: Small acts of recognition can have a big impact on important work outcomes.
Imagine that you happen to know that one of your direct reports likes to play guitar as a hobby. She has
various types of guitars at home and will occasionally regale her closest friends with an impromptu
performance. Now imagine that this employee goes the extra mile at work one week. Maybe she comes in
on Saturday to help meet an important deadline, or volunteers to sit on a committee nobody else wants to get
involved with. It goes without saying that she would undoubtedly be pleased if you thanked her and showed
recognition for her effort and dedication.
