Lesson 13- Entrepreneurship: Its Historical Background and Role in the Economy

INTRODUCTION:
Good Day Everyone! Entrepreneurship involves money. Money is something
that is generally accepted by the people in exchange for the articles they sell or
the service they perform. Entrepreneurship is generally referred to as “the ability
of individuals to perceive the kind of products or services that others need and to
deliver these at the right time, at the right place, to the right people at the right
price.

SUBJECT DESCRIPTION:
This unit on Entrepreneurship consists of five lessons. The first lesson, is on the
concept of entrepreneurship, its historical background, and its role in the
economy. Second lesson, is identifying business opportunities and the remaining
lessons are on the type of entrepreneurial activities namely: retailing,
manufacturing and services. All these lessons aim to give the students an
adequate basic knowledge that can develop their interest and their inclination
to become entrepreneurs.

Lesson 13: Entrepreneurship: Its Historical Background and Role in the Economy
Time Frame: 1 Week
The Development of the circulation of Money:
Money- is one of the most important inventions of the human kind.
Paper currency was invented in China as early as the 11th century.
Ancient Babylon has a highly developed monetary system as did Ancient Greece
and Rome.

THE FUNCTION OF MONEY IS THREE-FOLD:


1. It acts as a medium of exchange. It makes it easy to trade.
2. It serves as a standard of value so that economic values can be measured
as when one buys a piece of chocolate etc.
3. It serves as a store of wealth. Keeping one’s wealth in the form of money
allows one to buy other wealth like house and lot. Etc.

Philippine money, both paper bills and coins, are issued by the Central Bank of
the Philippines.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BARTER ECONOMY AND MONEY ECONOMY:


Barter Economy is the exchange of good with another good.
Money Economy. When the person wants a particular goods he only has to
exchange it with money.

ROLE OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN THE GROWTH OF ECONOMY
Entrepreneurship is a catalyst for economic growth. Peter Drucker, the father of
modern management, suggested that the work of entrepreneurs drives free-
market economy. Entrepreneurs drive the economy because they create wealth
through innovation.
In the Philippines, the growth of the local version of Mc Donald. Jollibee, is
unprecedented. Jollibee is in American Style fast-food restaurant with Filipino
influenced dishes.
SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES
The Magna Carta for Small Enterprises defines small and medium enterprises as
any business activity or enterprise engage in industry, agribusiness, and or services,
whether single proprietorship, cooperative, partnership or corporation whose
total assets, inclusive of those arising from loans but exclusive of the land on which
the particular business entity’s office, plant and equipment are situated, must
have value under the following revised categories:

1. Micro Enterprises-engage in small business like ambulant store, peddlers,


repairmen or service contractor.

2. Cottage Industries- these includes handicrafts, furniture, garments, food


processing, ceramics, metalcrafts and complementation crafts.

3. Small Enterprise- this kind of enterprise provides big production of goods


and services and requires a number of manpower.

4. Medium Enterprise- it is an enterprise that needs specialized workers in order
to operate the business since it provides larger number of production.

5. Large enterprise-this is a multi-company that requires a large number of


employees in order to operate.

CONTRIBUTIONS OF ENTREPRENEURS TO ECONOMIC GROWTH


1. They develop new markets. Entrepreneurs are naturally creative and
resourceful.

2. They discover new sources of materials. Entrepreneurs are not satisfied with
the resources they find within traditional sources.

INTRODUCTION:
Good Day Everyone! Try to observe the economic activities around you, so
that you will have the idea at a young age on what business you can try with a
small capital. With this you can help your parents have additional income for the
family. Try to do the business venture. There are plenty of business opportunities
ahead.

SUBJECT DESCRIPTION:
This lesson will give you more knowledge on the basics on how to come up
with the right business idea and come up with the requirements in setting up a
business. You can also get ideas from the stories of successful entrepreneurs.

Identifying Business Opportunity;
By now, you must already have an idea about the type of enterprise you
are interested in. you also learned that, to become a successful entrepreneur,

INTRODUCTION:
Good Day Everyone! Some people in the urban areas have seen selling
cigarettes and candies on the streets. Some are selling fruits and vegetables in
the market. Some students are selling cookies in school. With these forms of
activities, we hope you will be motivated to start thinking of your future business
plan. Some people are manufactured goods in their own factories. Rendering
specific type of work or activity for a person or entity is a kind of business using
their skills, expertise or profession. Service business could range from a small
enterprise of providing house service or repair work in a community.

SUBJECT DESCRIPTION:
This unit includes the retailing and its related activities, the manufacturing
and its related activities and rendering service and its related activities. All the
lessons aim to give the students an adequate basic knowledge that can
develop your interest and inclination to become entrepreneurs. It hopes to give
you an ideas and information on how to become a building entrepreneur and
how you can embide that entrepreneurial spirit by actually immersing yourself in
any entrepreneurial activity in your home, your school and your neighborhood.

Aims and Importance of Retailing:
Retailing-refers to all forms of selling directly to the consumer.
Selling –is a marketing transaction in which the merchant sells the product for
the purpose of providing service in securing profit.

CONTRIBUTION OF RETAILING IN THE COUNTRY

a. The retailing business generates a substantial amount of employment


compared to some industry sector in the country.
b. It serves as the connecting link from the manufacturer/wholesaler to the
ultimate consumers.
c. It supports other industries like transport, refrigeration, warehousing, and
storage.
d. It generates value-added revenues that contributes a major portion to the
country’s gross domestic product.
e. It promotes wealth generation for the many independent and wholly owned
small retail business, thus, improving quality of life and boosting spending and

manufacturing industries, products manufacture in the country, activities related
to manufacturing and the value of creativity in manufacturing products. All the
lessons aim to give the students an adequate basic knowledge that can
