Air Pollution Reduction Model Project

The student has designed a working model to reduce air pollution by collecting exhaust from vehicles. Sensors attached to streetlights detect pollution and power fans to draw exhaust through filters that collect carbon particles. The filtered air and carbon are captured and can be used to help plant growth or make ink. The design aims to reuse pollution on a large scale across India to improve air quality and the environment over time.

Science project

As we all know Delhi is the most polluted city in the world.

Pollution makes it so. No matter what kind of pollution it is. It
may be noise pollution, water pollution, air pollution or land
pollution. Air pollution is the major cause. This causes poor
visibility on the roads, causing accidents, respiratory problems
such as asthama, and lung cancer.

According to me todays transportation is causing it. According

to the daily statistics, around 1.446 billion cars and vehicles
are running on the roads daily. So we can imagine how much
pollution this creates in our environment.

So today I have made a working model, which will demonstrate

you how to reduce air pollution, or rather how to reuse it.

Total cost to develop it was around 200 – 300 RUPEES

Materials required :

 Cardboard, glue, scissors,

 Wires, batteries, clip connectors
 Smoke sensor
 DC motor
 Fan
 Led bulbs.

How this works ?

So basically in we will have streetlights on the road with a

smoke sensor attached to it. This smoke sensor is attached to
a exhaust fan. Then some pipes will lead from the exhaust to a
container. Before reaching here, the pollution will be passed
from a filter paper also, so that the unburnt carbon particles
can get collected on it for further use. So when the smoke
sensor will detect the pollution from cars, it will turn on the
machinery. One container or tank will be connected to 5-6
sensors.

Here the fan ( acts like an exhaust) starts working and takes
in all the smoke from the vehicles. Then this smoke is passed
through filter paper where all the carbon get deposited.

The rest of the smoke is stored in a container, through which

it is released in such an green environment, that too
nonresidential. As that air only has carbon dioxide, and carbon
monoxide (carbon dioxide is absorbed by plants during
photosynthesis and carbon monoxide helps in seed germination
and development of roots of plants.)

The container part and the filter paper all will be under the
ground, as in countries like India with a lot of population, we
cannot utilize the footpaths or the land for building such
things.

Use of the unburnt carbon deposits in the pollution:

1) In making ink- the carbon particles gives us a rich black

color. So why not use it to make the black inks. As we all
know the ink we use today has a lot of dyes, chemicals,
wax, resins, additives, etc.
This is also affects our environment. So why not to
replace it with 100% natural thing. Yes we can make black
paints, ink, kajal, and even eyeliner from this carbon.
In making ink we need to mix egg yolk, gum Arabic, and
honey and a drops of water. That’s it !.
This ink can be dyed with natural colors to make vivid
outcomes.
The carbon made ink is widely used in printers now a
days.
2) This carbon has many other uses such as in making
pencils, and a combustible substance.
But today I making only the carbon ink.

What happens to the stored pollution in the container ??

1) The smoke or pollution stored in the container
(through pipelines) can be released into a green (with a
lot of trees) nonresidential area. As these gases in the
smoke (MAINLY OF CO, CO2, ) helps the plant to
develop at a better pace.
2) This smoke can be compressed in the cylinders, and
made to react with vinegar and baking soda ( which also
releases a large amount of CO2) can be used as a good
fire extinguisher.)
3) As this is made from waste pollution so we can make it
available in each of the houses of the country including
the slum areas and that too at a very cheap rates.
This thing will also add to the economy of our country,
and keep our country safe from fires.

Future plans:

In future when the pollution + population + and vehicles all will

increase this thing will be very useful. As with the modern
technology we make certain advancement in it.

We can make it sound proof, so that it does not creates

problem for the residents who have their home on the roads.

We bring in mobility in this. As with the future there would be

less space, so the fan can be made compact. It can come out
of the surface of the road. (that part of road can be made
foldable with a different material such as marble and hinges.

In future the smoke sensors can be more efficient, so better

sensors will lead to the better working of the machinery.

This idea is to make this project on a large scale in the

country with better efficiency and less space.

The area where this mechanism will be installed will require

many trees or plants around it as the exhaust will attract all
the pollution towards itself, creating a polluted environment
there FOR A WHILE. To reduce the chances of health
hazards over that place, we can make that place more and
more greener.

Requirements :

For keeping this machinery intact we need to :

 Maintain the sensor
 Make sure no paint is done over them
 They are checked regularly
 The batteries or the power generating source should
give the required amount of energy.

In conditions such as heavy rain , these sensors may not

differentiate between the moisture particles and the smoke
particles.

So for this there is one single solution, that we need to use

good quality of sensors, because those sensors wont have this
problem.

NOTE- being good quality of sensors DOES NOT mean they

are expensive.

Currently this can be used in specific developed cities of india.

But in near future it should cover almost all parts of india.

For making india clean not only this mechanism but also we
would need to stop bursting crackers, extra vehicles, etc and
do everything that we can do to keep our world clean, safe and
non hazardous.

I see a clean india in future with zero pollution and green

environment.

Common questions

In densely populated cities, space constraints may challenge installation. Ensuring sufficient vegetation near exhaust sites for CO2 absorption may be difficult. Also, cost pressures from regular maintenance and potential technical malfunctions can complicate implementation. Despite these, the innovative design attempts to mitigate space use and costs, but its large-scale adoption would necessitate overcoming infrastructural and financial barriers .

Plants in the to-be-released areas absorb the CO2 from the stored pollution, facilitating photosynthesis, while CO assists in seed germination and root development. This natural process is essential as it offsets potential pollution damage caused by releasing treated air, thus promoting a balanced ecological environment .

The collected carbon particles can be used to produce items such as black ink, paint, and kajal by mixing with natural substances like egg yolk, gum Arabic, and honey. This process simplifies ink production and decreases reliance on harmful dyes and additives. Additionally, the carbon can be used in making pencils and as a combustible material, presenting both economic and environmental advantages by turning waste into usable products .

The collected smoke can be compressed in cylinders and reacted with vinegar and baking soda, which releases CO2, an effective fire suppressant. This approach helps utilize waste pollution to produce a low-cost, accessible fire extinguisher, benefiting economic and safety measures, especially in areas with limited resources .

The proposed mechanism involves installing streetlights equipped with smoke sensors and exhaust fans. When smoke is detected, the fan activates, drawing in smoke through filters that collect unburnt carbon particles. The filtered air is then stored in containers and released in nonresidential, green areas where CO and CO2 can aid in plant growth. Carbon collected can be used for making ink and other products, offering an environmentally friendly recycling method .

Good sensor quality is crucial for accurately identifying pollutants, especially separating smoke from moisture during adverse weather conditions. This precision ensures the system's effective response to pollution levels and its operational reliability. Poor sensor performance could lead to mismanagement, elevated costs, and failure to meet environmental goals, hence the emphasis on maintaining standards without excessive expenditure .

By reducing airborne pollutants and repurposing carbon waste into useful products, this model supports urban greening and facilitates ecological balance. It curtails harmful emissions, promoting plant growth which improves air quality. The proposed mechanism encourages adopting eco-friendly practices in urban planning and personal habits, driving comprehensive environmental improvements .

Challenges include distinguishing smoke particles from moisture during heavy rains, which can be mitigated by using high-quality sensors that are not necessarily expensive. Regular maintenance and non-obstruction of sensors via paint are also essential to ensure uninterrupted operations. Moreover, organizing resources such as the power supply are necessary for consistent performance .

Economically, the mechanism can generate revenue through the sale of carbon-based products, alleviate public expense on commercial inks and fire extinguishers, and create jobs for managing and maintaining the system. Societally, it promotes awareness of environmental care, providing tools to communities, including underprivileged areas, to combat pollution and fire hazards cost-effectively. This can lead to a comprehensive cultural shift toward sustainability .

The document suggests future enhancements such as making the mechanism soundproof, compact, and mobile to suit space-constrained environments. Additionally, advancements in smoke sensor technology could improve efficiency. The concept includes installing the system on a larger scale with requisite greenery to mitigate potential pollution hazards temporarily concentrated in the area .
