Universal Gearbox Design Project

A 30 kW electric motor drives a universal gearbox through a 95% efficient flat belt. The motor spins at 300 rpm, transmitting 70% of its power through spur gears inside the gearbox to an output shaft. The gearbox contains pulleys of 300mm and 100mm diameters, gears A and B of 100mm and 200mm diameters, and experiences tension forces of T1 and 4T2 in the belt. The problem is to determine shaft diameters and draw a construction drawing of the gearbox, assuming no power losses.

Machine Design Project

A medium-sized universal gearbox with spur gears is driven by an electrical motor

through a flat belt drive. The motor power is 30 𝐾𝑊, and the efficiency of the belt
drive is 95%. The input shaft rotates at 300 𝑟𝑝𝑚. The power transmitted through
the gear is 70% of the input power, while the remaining power is transmitted
though a rigid coupling mounted on the input shaft end as shown in figure. The
diameter of pulley, gear A and gear B are 300𝑚𝑚, 100𝑚𝑚, and 200𝑚𝑚,
respectively. The tension forces in the belt are 𝑇1 and 𝑇2 (𝑇1 = 4𝑇2 ). For the spur
gears, the pressure angle is 20° . The weight of pulley and coupling are 50 kg and
40 kg, respectively. Assume no power losses through the gearbox, determine the
followings: -

1) The input and output shaft diameters at each section (𝜏𝑎𝑙𝑙 = 60𝑀𝑝𝑎, 𝐾𝑚 =
1.5, 𝐾𝑡 = 1.2).
2) Draw a complete construction drawing for the gear box.
