Research Design
The present study is quantitative in nature and used the descriptive
research design. The study that the researcher would like to know is the
effects of modular learning to the academic performance of Buting Senior High
School ALS students. It is descriptive because the researcher would like to
describe and to give details to the research problems only and not offer a
conclusive solution to an existing problem. According to Sirsilla (2023),
descriptive research design is a powerful tool used by scientists and
researchers to gather information about a particular group or phenomenon.
This type of research provides a detailed and accurate picture of the
characteristics and behaviors of a particular population or subject.
Sampling Technique
This study shall also employ the use of purposive sampling because
only the Grade 12 Alternative Learning System (ALS) students will be used as
respondents in the study whom the researcher handles. Also, the modular
learning and self-learning modules is only offered to the Alternative Learning
System (ALS) students of Buting Senior High School. Purposive sampling,
also known as judgmental, selective, or subjective sampling, is a form of non-
probability sampling in which researchers rely on their own judgment when
choosing members of the population to participate in their surveys. (Alchemer,
2021).

Respondents
The respondents in the present study are 38 G12 Alternative Learning
System (ALS) senior high school students. There are 9 female students and 7
male students in Alternative Learning System (ALS) Information
Communication and Technology (ICT) strand. There are 2 female students
and 20 male students in Alternative Learning System (ALS) Home Economics
(HE) strand. Both the ages of the students are approximately between 15
years old to 30 years old. Respondents were taken from their General
Weighted Average (GWA). The General Average of the students are
considered as a criterion in getting the respondents. In addition, the General
Weighted Average (GWA) of the respondents that will be taken will be the
result of their academic performance.
Research Locale
The study will be conducted at Buting Senior High School. The
researcher choose this for it is the biggest stand-alone senior high school in
Pasig City. Buting Senior High School is an independent public senior high
school located in Buting, Pasig City recognized by the Department of
Education (DepEd). (BSHS, n.d.) The school had approximately 1300 students
and has 45 employees including the teaching and non-teaching staff. This
SHS IN BUTING, PASIG CITY PR2-MONES 6
Senior High School offers Academic and Tech-Voc tracks with 28 sections
both from the said tracks.
Instrument
Effectiveness of Modular Distance Learning Modality to the students of
Buenavista National High School form was used in the study. (Cabradilla,
2021). The researcher utilized the mentioned test to assess the levels and
experiences of the ALS students in terms of their utilization of modular
learning.
The Questionnaire consists of seven (7) items. With 3 choices which
consist of YES, NO, and UNABLE TO DECIDE the following are to be scored
as 1, 2, 3 with 3 being the negative and 1 as the positive.
A higher score that is acquired from the test indicated a higher level of
dissatisfaction on modular learning as a mode of education. While a student
who got a lower total score indicates that the respondent is satisfied with the
utilization of modular learning.
Data Analysis Procedure
The qualitative data that was collected in the study were analyzed using
the deductive thematic analysis approach as the research would like to verify
SHS IN BUTING, PASIG CITY PR2-MONES 6
the truthfulness of the Self-Determined Learning Theory. A five-level coding
process was done to increase the integrity of the analyzed data. The
researcher familiarized first herself with the transcript, then she created and
collated codes out of it. The codes were then grouped into themes and were
reviewed and revised accordingly. The researcher also sought three validators
who verified the themes developed by the researcher.
As explained by [Link] (2022), thematic analysis means analyzing
the patterns of themes in data where the patterns can be analyzed by
repetitive data reading, data coding, and theme creation.
