This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
master the Dressmaking course. The scope of this module permits it to be used in
many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse
vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard
sequence of the course.

The module is divided into three lessons, namely:

• Lesson 1 – Styles of Ladies’ Shorts
• Lesson 2 – Parts of Ladies’ Shorts
• Lesson 3 – Types of Pockets

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. identify the different types of ladies shorts;
2. discuss the parts of shorts; and
3. name the different types of pockets.

Shorts are a garment worn over the pelvic area, from the waist and splitting
to cover the upper part of the legs, sometimes extending down to the knees but not
covering the entire length of the leg.
The study says that shorts are used for a short version of ordinary trousers.
Shorts are typically worn in warm weather or in an environment where comfort and
airflow are more important than the protection of the legs.
There are different styles of shorts, ranging from knee-length short trousers
that can be worn as formal clothes to beachwear and athletic shorts.

Styles of Ladies’ Shorts

1. Denim Shorts – Shorts that can be Back

worn by both genders. It is also known as “jorts”
– combined words of jeans and shorts. It is made
from Denim fabric, with a waist band and a zipper. Front

2. Bermuda Shorts – is a short trouser

from 3-4 inches above the knee. It is
designed specifically for the British military
around 1900 in tropical climates. In the 1930s
and up to now, it is a wide option for fashionable
sportswear by men and women.

3. Skorts – A combined word of skirts and

shorts. It is made with a flap of fabric in the front
that makes the illusion of it being a skirt from
the front.

4. Scalloped Shorts – a short where the hemline
is a series of convex curves or looks like a scallop
shell when repeated.

5. Dolphin Shorts – also known as Dolfin,

a brand name for a specific style of unisex
shorts for athletics – a style popular in1980s.
It is common made from nylon with contrasting
binding and rounded corners.

6. Running Shorts – an athletic short designed

specifically for running – made from lightweight
materials, very short and split on the side for
easily movement.

Lesson 2 Parts of Ladies’ Shorts

Like in other garments, shorts can be in a different form. Its unique design
has its purpose based on what occasion to be worn but basically, it has a common
denominator – to make you comfortable and protect your legs. Below are the basic
parts of shorts that sometimes you can be seen in most kinds of shorts.

1. Waistband – A strip of material that can be gartered or not that encircles the
waist.
2. Seam – A joining of two edges or two pieces of material.
3. Crotch Point – it is seen at the bottom of the pelvis wherein joining two parts of
the material.
4. Pocket – a small bag sewn-in garment optionally. There are different types of
pockets depending on the design or purpose.
5. Hemline – It is a line formed at the lower edge of a garment.

Lesson 3 Types of Pockets
A pocket is a small bag sewn into or on a garment and it can be optionally
added design. Below are the different types of a pocket suitable for shorts.
