 What I Need to Know
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes in the performance of Dressmaking task. The
scope of this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The
language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are
arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course.

The module is divided into two lessons, namely:

● Lesson 1 – Preparing and Straightening the Material Before Cutting.
● Lesson 2 – Layout and Mark Pattern Pieces on the Fabric

After going through this module, you are expected to

1. prepare the material for ladies short;
2. straighten the grain of the material; and
3. layout pattern pieces on material.

What is It
After drafting all the patterns, you can start preparing the material for ladies’ short
pants. Recall the pointers in preparing the material discussed in our previous
lessons. It is the dressmaker’s responsibility to prepare the material before cutting
to ensure that the material will not shrink or get damaged.

2 Markings for Ladies Short

Laying out Pattern Pieces

Laying out the patterns pieces on the cloth helps you determine if the material is
enough for all the pattern pieces. Always start with the trial layout to avoid
mistakes and wasting of material. Lay all major pattern pieces first then place
small pattern pieces in between the big patterns. You can finish the final layout by
pinning the pattern to the fabric.

How to layout ladies’ short pants with garter and patch pocket

2. In a folded 45 -60 width fabric make a trial layout by placing all the patterns on
top of material.

3. Layout patterns by placing both sides of ladies’ short pattern at the center
together.

 4. For the final layout pin all the patterns as shown in the illustration.

Pinning Pattern Pieces on Cloth

To prevent the pattern and material from shifting when cutting and transferring marks we can
secure it with a pin. Always keep the material flat on the table, do not lift the material use
your one hand on the cloth to keep the material in place and the other hand to guide the pin
to the fabric.
