ME2121 Tutorial #4
Q1. A reversible heat engine as shown below operates on a Carnot Cycle between a heat source (at initial
temperature, TA) and a heat sink (at initial temperature, TB). Unlike the infinite thermal reservoirs, the
heat source and the heat sink in this case contain ideal gases with the same finite masses. After a certain
period of time, the temperatures of both the thermal reservoirs will be equalized to T2. Assuming that all
processes are ideal, prove: (a) the final temperature of both the thermal reservoirs is T2 = TATB , and (b)
=
the work output of the heat engine ( )
is W mC p TA + TB - 2 TATB . For the surroundings, assume that
there is no heat transfer and no temperature change. The pressures of both the thermal reservoirs remain
constant.

Q2. Using the Carnot cycle that operates with an ideal gas, show that the ratio of the heat transfer to
the absolute temperature for any process within a reversible cycle is a constant, i.e.,
Hence, demonstrate that for such a reversible cycle, the efficiency of the Carnot cycle is given by
Q3. (a). A reversible heat engine (E) operating between a heat source at temperature TH and a heat sink
at temperature TL, receives heat transfer QH from the heat source, rejects QL to the sink while delivering
work of the amount W to the surroundings. Show that the relation between these temperatures and
the work and heat transfers of the engine is given by
(b) Figure below shows the schematic diagram of a heat source at a temperature of T1 supplying heat
to two reversible heat engines EA and EB, which rejects an equal amount of heat to heat sinks at 60oC
and 0oC. The thermal efficiency of the combined system is 40%, and total work delivered is 3000 kJ.
Determine:
(i) the total heat transfer from the reservoir at T1,
(ii) the ratio of heat supplied to EA and EB,
(iii) the source temperature T1
(iv) the value of Q2.
[Ans: QA+QB=7500 kJ, QA/QB=273/333, T1 = 500 K, Q2 = 2250 kJ]

Q4. Two kg of saturated steam at 600 kPa are contained in a piston-cylinder device. The saturated steam
expands adiabatically until the pressure is 100 kPa and produces 700 kJ of work output. (a) Determine the
entropy change of the steam [kJ/kg·K]. (b) Is this process realistic? Support your answer by using both the
T-s diagram and the concepts of 2nd law.
[Ans: -0.238 kJ/kg·K, not realistic]
