There is a Latin saying: Unicuique suum, non praevalebunt”. “Every man for himself: That’s the formula for disaster.”
When Ninoy spoke of “the quest for that elusive national unity which is imperative for the nation’s survival”-he said
“survival”. He meant “survival”. How can we survive, as a nation and as a people, if we have made the name of our
national game as anarchaic free-for-all in a “basket of crabs?”

I am sure this will be increasingly done by our president, by consistent personal example she has set a pattern for others
to follow. I know she is bent on pursuing the battle against corruption with ever more forceful and energetic action. But
we know, we know that she and those around her cannot do this all by themselves. As citizens, we must go “into an
action mode ourselves.” The task cannot be done without us.

K.K.K also means, we are told, Kanya Kanya Kabig, Kanya-Kanyang Kurakot. Surely I don’t need to dwell on this theme
this morning. For weeks, the papers, radios, TV, have shouted nothing else. It is talk of the marketplace. I myself have
spoken, Selecting particular chapters or themes for evaluation. Critiquing the argument of the book 4. Evaluate the book
by: Commenting on aspects of the content. Indicating how it meets the readers’ needs. Remarking on its format, price,
and value for money. Making recommendation for purchase or otherwise. 5 often enough, of the 40 big thieves left
behind in our midst, and many smaller ones which might include... even ourselves? Who among us did not re-echo the
sentiments and the work of the beloved Chino Roces when he asked for a renewed moral order in the government and
society? It is a problem which must be addressed, and addressed vigorously and unrelentingly.

If everyone in this church this morning, in Ninoy’s memory, pledge before the Lord that one year, “Bayan Muna, Bago
and Sarili”, would really be made an operative guideline, could it not mark at least a beginning? If for one year, just not
going, we would make the principle govern our deeds, our conduct in society, would that not be smart already? How can
we have become too calloused to do even this?

I. About the Book

A. Title: Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption
Author: Stephen King
B. Publication: 1982
C. Summary: Andy Dufresne, a banker, was suspected for the murder of his wife and his wife’s lover. He was
then sentenced for life imprisonment in Shawshank. He met a guy Red, who is the narrator of the story, and
they became friends. First, it was tough for Andy because he was physically abused and was raped by a
gang. Because of his intelligence in banking, he became a financial adviser for corrections officers in their
prison. Andy was also used by the warden to launder money under a fake identity. Afterwards, there came a
new prisoner, Tommy, who can prove Andy’s innocence pertaining the murder. Tommy was transferred into
another prison to prevent the release of Andy because Andy might expose the warden’s crimes. Andy told
Red his plans of escaping and going to Mexico under the fake identity used in the laundering. Years after,
Andy suddenly disappeared in his cell. Little did they know, Andy had already escaped the prison though a
wall hole made by himself. He then lived his life under a fake identity and went to Mexico. Later on, Red
received his parole and followed Andy to Mexico.
II. Pertinent Details about the Book
A. No, it is not. However, it is a part of a collection.
B. Stephen King is known as the “king of horror”, and the genre of this book is very different from what he is
known for. Nevertheless, he still managed to write a wholesome dramatic story. This book proves that he is
capable in writing any kinds of stories, not just horror.
III. About the Story
A. What was the story all about? : The story is all about the prison life of a wrongly convicted man, named
Andy Dufresne.
B. Who are the main characters in the story? What did they do in the story?
Andy Dufresne – the main character of the story. He was wrongly convicted for his wife’s death.
Red – He is the friend of Andy. He helped Andy to get smuggled things. He lived with Andy in Mexico.
Warden Norton – the warden of the prison who launders money and kills prisoners.
Tommy – The new prisoner that was immediately transferred. He told the warden that Andy is innocent.
Brooks – He was the old man who facilitates the prison library. He received a parole but was depressed
because he was institutionalized in the prison.
C. Andy was wrongly sentenced for the death of his wife and wife’s lover.
IV. Other Interesting Details about the Book (historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy, some other genre)
- The Shawshank Prison is not a real prison.
V. Author’s Goal
A. Why did the author write the book?
- King was inspired by the story of Tolstoy “God sees the truth but waits”, and made his own story out of it.
B. Is the title parallel to what the book means?
- Yes, Rita Hayworth was like the inspiration of Andy to go out of prison, and when he escaped from the
prison, he brought redemption to himself and to his fellow prisoners by exposing the warden’s crimes.
C. What devices did the author use to achieve his or her goal/s?
- King used the warden as the symbol of hypocrisy. The warden shows the corrupt system of penitentiary.
VI. Characterization in the Book
A. Distinct ways the author establishes for characterization, and for each instance noted. Support your
observation with a reference (not a quotation) from the book.
- The writer built up the character of Andy as a fine and clever looking guy, which is what he really is. The
narrator in the book described Andy as a man that looked as if he should have been wearing a tie and that
on the outside he had been a vice-president in the trust department of a large Portland bank
VII. Reader’s Personal Experiences
A. Could you relate to any of the characters in the story? In what way?
- Andy. I relate to him because I also went through experiences I don’t want to go through, but I patiently
waited and achieved my plan just like what he did.
B. Have you ever done some of the things or felt some of the same things that the characters did?
- Red felt sad when Andy was already gone in the prison. I also felt sad when my friend left the country and
studied abroad.
VIII. Reader’s Opinion
A. Did you like the book? Why? Why not?
- I liked the book because it shows the longsuffering and success of Andy and the great bonds between the
prisoners.
B. What is your favorite part of the book?
- My favorite part is when Andy finally escaped the prison. It was so satisfying. Also, I love the part when Red
already received his parole and followed Andy to Mexico.
C. If you could change any part of the book, what would it be?
- Maybe I would change the part where Tommy was transferred to another prison. If I were the writer, I
would also let Tommy be killed by the warden like what they did in the movie because it shows more the
evil nature of the warden.
D. Would you recommend the book for other people to read?
- Yes, I would absolutely recommend it because of its inspiring story.
