5.2 CRITICAL ANALYSIS REPORT
Why do we need this “exercise”?

• To evaluate competency in looking at options and

alternative solutions
• To evaluate experience and underlying knowledge
• To evaluate clarity of thoughts
• To evaluate involvement, roles and contribution to a
project
• To enable panel to ask further in-depth questions
during the professional interview
39
5.2 CRITICAL ANALYSIS REPORT
The Critical Analysis shall be the basis for the Panel to test
candidate’s “Competencies” to the following levels:-

Level 1: Knowledge and understanding

Level 2: Practical Application of knowledge and understanding

Level 3: Reasoned advice

40
5.2 CRITICAL ANALYSIS REPORT
So what is a Critical Analysis Report?

Most candidates write:-

• A commentary
• A piece of course work
• A story
• A thesis
• A report

41
5.2 CRITICAL ANALYSIS REPORT

Definition of a Critical Analysis:-

• It is a detailed analysis of a project with which the
candidate has been extensively involved during your
training period,
• with a conclusion giving a critical appraisal of the
project,
• together with a reflective analysis of the experience
gained
“John Wilkinson”

42
5.2 CRITICAL ANALYSIS REPORT

Definitions based on dictionary

“Critical”

Competent to criticise

“Analysis”

Separate into constituent elements

43
5.2 CRITICAL ANALYSIS REPORT

“Critical”

Examine and judge carefully, NOT to find fault with

“Analysis”

▪ Highlight the shortcomings of the projects, its processess, what

went wrong and why, have lessons learnt

▪ Highlight the success of the projects, its processes, how the

decisions and actions made it succeed

44
5.2 CRITICAL ANALYSIS REPORT
The Critical Analysis must reflect candidates’ abilities and
competency in:-
• Written and graphical communication

of the project
• Colourful descriptions of Employers
• Long story of what happened during the project
• Story of what happened to candidates
• Thick padded up report

46
5.2 CRITICAL ANALYSIS REPORT

A short concise
submission is
better than a
thick padded up
submission

47
5.2 CRITICAL ANALYSIS REPORT

OF THICK REPORT
WITH ATTACHMENTS
WHICH ARE NOT
NECESSARY

48
5.2 CRITICAL ANALYSIS REPORT
No need hard

But care taken to
submit a
presentable report
which is easy to
read, is a plus point

49
5.2 CRITICAL ANALYSIS REPORT
What the Panel (2 persons) is looking for:-
• Candidates’ perspective why key issues arise and what
are the alternatives
• Examples of candidates’ abilities
• Candidates’ competencies
• How candidates made decisions
• Why candidates made certain decisions
• Candidates’ personal involvement or working as a team
• Awareness of other current issues

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
ON WORK DIARY AND LOG BOOK
Q1 : Do I need to submit 2 years work diary? Or can I submit a work diary
based on a period that deemed sufficient by the Board?
You are required to submit minimum 2 years (416 days) of Work Diary.
If the Board finds your training is deficient in coverage or depth, you
might need to extend the period of training from 6 to 12 months.

Q2 : As I am currently working in Singapore, is it acceptable to get my

manager (Registered QS in Singapore) to supervise and sign my Work
Diary?
No, only for Local Malaysian Experience.

ON WORK DIARY AND LOG BOOK
Q3 : May I use the previous JTPC work diary and logbook to fill up Year 2 work
experience for assessment even though the new ruling APC has commenced?
YES, you can. Currently we accept both formats either the previous ones or
the current ones.

Q4 : For Work Diary and Log Book, when does the 2 years start, is it from the
date of BQSM membership approval?
The 2 years of recording the professional training for work diary can start from
the date of your registration as PVQS with the Board provided you have
received approval on your APC form submission or 6 months prior to your
registration with RISM as Graduate QS, whichever is later.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
ON WORK DIARY AND LOG BOOK
Q5 : Can I submit Work Diary and Log Book for 2 years together?
No. Do submit 1 year at a time so we can ensure that your Professional Training meets with the
requirement of the Professional Competence

Q6 : After submission of the first year Work Diary and Log Book, how soon can I submit for the
second year?
▪ Your first year diary will be assessed upon submission. If all are okay such as the training is
sufficient, you have acquired the necessary experience and meet the criteria of Section 4.5.2
and 4.5.3 of the Guideline, you can submit the 2nd year diary once you get the result of the first
year.
▪ Section 4.5.2 & 4.5.3 - Candidates are required to attain minimum 50% from three areas and
also attain Level 1 to 3 from three areas of Professional Experience and reasonably balanced
working knowledge preferably in as many other areas as practicable. Level 1 refers to your
knowledge and understanding, Level 2 refers to your practical application of the knowledge and
Level 3 refers to reasoned analytical advice and depth of the knowledge.

ON WORK DIARY AND LOG BOOK

Q7 : I have applied through JTPC in 2015. So what is the procedure now?

Please advise.
▪ The Board has no problem to accept candidates that came through JTPC
route. You can proceed to fill in your Work Diary, and we allow for you
to backdate your professional training up to the date of your
registration as PVQS with the Board and 6 months prior to your
registration with RISM as Graduate QS, whichever is later.
▪ However, if you are quite close to having 5 years experience, you can
opt to Experience Route and just submit the Critical Analysis report
without having to fill in the Work Diary and Log Book. However, do
inform if you intend to change your APC route from Graduate to
Experience.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
ON WORK DIARY AND LOG BOOK
Q8 : I am filling in my work diary and currently backdating it with the work experience which will
start from Dec 2015 until Dec 2016. Is this acceptable? If yes, shall I submit first year diary for
approval, then second year diary from Dec 2016 to Dec 2017, followed by critical analysis report
and professional interview?

Yes, your statement is correct. Submit the Work Diary for the 1st year first, and others
subsequently after. Provided you can pass all the stages, it should be proceeding as such.

Q9 : Can I submit the Work Diary & Log Book with experience from firm A who is a consultant (say
from October 2016 till April 2017) and combine with experience gained in firm B who is a
contractor (say from September 2017 till May 2018) for part of Year 1 assessment?

▪ YES, as long as you meet the number of days of 208 days for each 12 months and you are under
single supervisor with continuous 6 months of working at one time.

▪ However, do note that under the contractor’s firm, if you do not have supervision internally as
there is no registered QS in the company, then you would require to fill in additional of 1 more
year Work Diary and Log Book (ie. total 3 years) for using External Supervisor.
