BEST CLASSHOME PROGRAM: Boost Awareness, Attitude and Practice of Students towards solid waste management problem . 2

I. CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

We are born from the earth; we return to the earth and we sustain by the earth.  As

a result, the environment in which we live is crucial and has a direct impact on our

lives. Man is supposedly a product of his surroundings. Since then, environmental

issues have become a global concern, and now a pandemic has struck. The Covid-19

Pandemic has significantly changed people's lives globally. It has an impact on the

learner's lifestyle and values toward nature in addition to their academic environment.

In Fact, online or distance learning has chosen to use in delivery of instructions and

learning.

In the midst of a pandemic, nature cannot be ignored. It is quite challenging for

teachers to integrate the value they desire to impart to students. As result, Learners

must monitor their understanding of and appreciation for nature as they return to face-

to-face classes in SY 2022–2023.

In many countries, controlling solid waste is one of the challenges. Poor solid

waste management will result in a multitude of problems that have effects on society,

the environment, and human health. Since educational institutions are agents of

transformation and R.A. Solid waste, No. 9003, DO s2014 05 and division of Iligan

WOW (War on Drugs), Maria Cristina National High School still has trouble with the

problem of plastics and solid rubbish on campus despite the fact that management

concepts are being incorporated into science teaching. In this situation, Maria Cristina

National High School's Science Department devised an innovation program to teach

students how to preserve a green environment and to give them a boost in their efforts

to clean up and maintain their surroundings and that program named BEST Class

home award.

There is no permanent solution of this problem the only thing we can do to

decrease and regulate trash generation is to be properly informed of the issue and to

take appropriate action. The most crucial factor in this situation is proper waste

management. The logistics, environmental impact, social responsibility, and financial

aspects of an organization's garbage disposal are all addressed by the science of waste

management. The three fundamental elements of solid waste management (SWM) are

collection, transportation, and disposal.

Each is driven by needs, wants, and desires. The basic norm is that needs,

desires, and wants come before actions or behaviors, incentives, and motivation.

The reward for work and success comes after, even though they are typically

linked to one another. In order to support students in the classroom and at school,

teachers commonly use rewards and reward schemes. Rewarding good behavior,

learning, and achievement in children.

Improper solid waste management particularly paper, food waste, and plastics

which are frequently generated wastes in school. This proposal is to achieve

protection of the public health, safety, and environmental quality conducive learning,

which aims to strengthen the solid waste management of high school students.

Students, faculty and staff, and the community are obliged to participate the

program. The high school students, in particular, will be trained to become disciplined

individuals in protecting the environment and maintaining its cleanliness. The

participation of the program will help participants to obtain minimization of pollution

which causes health and environmental risks in our community. This practice invites

individuals in promoting ideas on how to improve and enhance the programs by citing

potential modern problems with comprehensive solution.

Proper solid waste management helps young individuals to prove the

community that they are competent to promote cleanliness and maintenance of the

environment such as embracing modernity by collaborating technologies and new

principles in partaking the mission to save mother earth. The said program argues

traditional practices by social engagement through class competition, such as cleaning

and earning class points. This develops new model in integrating learning and

competition.

Student motivation has an impact on all aspects of school life, including

attendance, academic standing and attitude. As a result of these pressures, teachers

bombard students with the promise of rewards; stickers for good behaviour, treats for

completing assignments, lunches for turning in homework. Of all the rewards given,

grades are the most common reward (Seoane and Smink, 1991). These good

intentions, though, are missing the mark. When rewards are given, children don't

perceive themselves in control of learning, they approach and complete tasks

differently than when rewards are not given, and their work is judged as less creative

(Amabile and Gitomer, 1984; Condry, 1977; Ryan and Grolnick, 1986). One of the

outcomes that most teachers hope for from a reward system is better behavior. The

implementation of such a strategy can reduce undesirable behavior, as demonstrated

by PBIS and other reward-based motivating Best class home award systems.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that punishing unwanted actions does not work.

Finding other ways to promote positive conduct becomes all the more crucial for

teachers in light of this.

In general, integrating the reward system into cleanliness of a school is the

answer of the problem of our community and school to solid waste management and

gives motivation and good attitude of students.

II. ACTION RESEARCH QUESTIONS

This study aims to raise students' understanding of solid waste

management and motivate them to keep the school clean.. It specifically

answered the following research questions.

1. Is there a significant difference in the attitude towards cleanliness

in classrooms of students who were implemented Best class home

program?

2. What are the levels of academic performance of the learners after

implementation of Best class home program?

3. What action plan can be proposed to provide sustainability and

efficacy in implementing the Best Class Home Program?

III. PROPOSED INNOVATION, INTERVENTION AND STRATEGY

The proposed program is an innovative program which teaches students to

preserve our environment, and to provide motivation in maintaining cleanliness and

save mother earth by identifying actual and potential risks and problems in their

surroundings such as BEST Class. BEST Class is a school Program that integrates

learning in a form of school activity. Social engagement is the main agenda of the

program, particularly, competition in gaining class points by earning consistent

participation in cleaning activities and enhancing students’ interest towards

cleanliness and solid waste management.

However, students are also encouraged to provide proposal programs and

activities, in return, they gain class points. For every participation, they earn class

points. By this platform, students are learning how to lead, act, and solve problems in

preparation to become young leaders in their community. This act shows that

initiative in integrating knowledge and skills through BEST Class trains students how

to be socially aware of their surroundings.

Every Monday during the flag raising activity, the section with the highest

points based on the criteria the science teachers gave will be declared. This section

will then have the opportunity to win the tarpaulin, which will be put on their

classroom within a week.
