An Observation/Interview Guide for the Home-School Link
Read the following carefully before you begin to observe/interview. Then write your
observation report on the space provided on the next page.

The Learner
1) Make a general observation of the learner. Describe him or her in each of the domains
of development:
 physical-body build and height (thin, chubby, underweight, overweight), level of
physical activity (fast, slow, lethargic, active, etc.) The learner is physically fit
and healthy. He is also very active in school.
 social interaction with teachers and classmates (loner, shy, sociable, friendly,
gets into fights, like by others, etc.) He is very friendly and approachable to
everyone around him.
 emotional moods, temperament, cries easily, loses temper, happy, shows
enthusiasm, excited, indifferent etc. He is a very strong independent man. He
doesn’t show weaknesses in front of others.
 cognitive (appears to understand lessons, copes with the lessons, excels, lags
behind, shows reasoning skills, turn in assignments, and requirements, etc.) He
can easily pick up the lesson in other subjects but find it hard to the
subjects with numbers.
Interview the Teacher
1) What are the most noticeable characteristics of the learner? (emotional disposition,
behavior and discipline, sense of responsibility, study habits, academic performance,
relationship with peers, relationship with adults, social adjustment) He is easy to get
along with and he quickly understand what is being taught in class. There are
times that he is late in passing but he’ll make sure that his activities are
complete.
2) How does the teacher communicate with the parents? how often? what do they
discuss? How do they decide on the best course of action to resolve issues or
problems? They don’t talk much with the learner’s parents because the teacher
doesn’t have trouble with the student either.
3) How does the teacher utilize resources in the community to support the teaching-
learning process? How does the teacher work with the community to meet the
needs of the learners? I'm making an effort to serve the needs of the pupils by
going to them. I frequently approach them for assistance with school
assignments like Brigada Eswkela as well. In order to fully use their abilities and
talents and to holistically encourage the students, I am also setting aside times
for reading and writing sessions (with the assistance and consent of authorities
like the barangay captain and the school administration).

sometimes.

chicken or fried fish.
5) Who took care of him or her as a child? Both parents took care of him, but since the father
is working, the mother and the older siblings took care of the child most of the time.
Learner’s Social Aspect:
1) Describe your child sociability (friendly, outgoing or shy, loner) He is friendly, easy to deal
with peers.
2) Who were the learner’s playmates? He usually plays with his classmates and mostly with
his boys’ neighbors.
3) As a child then, was he or she allowed to play outside? Yes, he is allowed with his parents’
supervision.

5) Do you have rules for him or her to follow regarding going out? Yes, his parents give rules
to him every time he will go outside.
6) What are these rules? Always ask permission before going out, go home early, be careful
when crossing the streets, always check if there is no vehicle coming.
Emotional-Moral
1) What are your expectations of the child? I am expecting that he can handle himself well
and doing good in his studies.
2) How do you provide a nurturing environment for your child? I provide a nurturing
environment for my child through exposing him to circle of his friends whom I can
trust with.

meet her or his emotional needs? Yes, sometimes he asks for some advices and I always
do my best to give him good advices and the comfort he needs.
4) What do you do when he or she is not successful in something? I encourage him not to give
up and support him in all ways to strive harder.
How do you discipline your children? I discipline my children through giving a punishment when
they have done something wrong.
1) Do you have rules in the House? What are they? Yes, I have rules. Help me in doing
household choirs, respect us and other older siblings, always ask for permission if they
will go out with friends.
2) How do you impose the rules? I impose the rules by explaining to them that there is
equivalent punishment once they disobey the rules.
3) What are the consequences of breaking the rules? The consequences of breaking the rules
are I will beat them with slippers and I will not let them go outside for the whole day.
Learners’ Cognitive Aspect:
1) What are the child's interests? The child is very interested in playing volleyball and
basketball.
2) What is he or she good at in school? He is good in English. He is also good in sports
especially in basketball.
3) In what subject/s does he or she have difficulty. He is having difficulty in the subject of
Physics.
4) How do you monitor his or her performance in school? How do you motivate him or her? I
ask the teacher about his progress in school. I motivate him through reviewing his
lessons and supporting him in all activities in school.
5) Do you have rules at home to help him develop good study habits? Yes
6) What are these rules? How are they implemented? He must finish his
homework/assignments/projects before going to bed and he’s not allowed to watch tv
after dinner because he needs to study the lessons.

I found out that the child is friendly, active and he likes to socialize with his peers. He
likes to play basketball that is why most of her friends are boys. He also participates in
school activities. The teacher that makes the child motivated to learn. He is responsible
in carrying and molding the cognitive, affective, psychomotor skills as well as the total
personality of the learner.

Conclusions

I conclude that the school and home contributes a great impact in developing the
cognitive, affective, psychomotor and to the total personality of the pupils. Hence, the
learning of the child begins at home. The child learns values, good attitude and
discipline. However, school plays a vital role in molding the child. Since the school is
made for the purpose of developing physical, social, emotional-moral and cognitive
aspect of the learner. The total development of the child depends in school as well as
from the teacher.

From the home I visited and interviewed, they practice the authoritative style of
parenting. Parents achieve a good blend. They are firm yet loving. They treat
children with respect and warmth; make children understand consequences of
their behavior.
2) Relating your data with what you learned from child development, what family factors do you
think contribute to the development and over-all adjustment of the learner in school?
The family factors that contribute to the development and over-all adjustment of
the learner in school are first, the emotional moral development; on how the
learners are nurtured by his parents, second is the financial setting, and last is the
cultural background of the family.
3) Does the communication between the homes-school have an effect on the learner? If yes,
what are these effects?
Learner can absorb the way they communicate in their home, they can bring in this
in school which reflects how the learner nurtured and raised by his parents at
home because I believe that “education begins at home”.
4) How can the teacher partner with the community to contribute to the development and
learning of the students? Who are the people or which institutions can the teacher tap to seek
advice regarding the development and learning of students?
I think the child's family and the barangay can provide the teacher with guidance
on the child's development. the Chairman of the barangay as well as the clinic. This
group of individuals and institution may support a child's learning as well as
growth. While the clinic concentrates on health development, family is the perfect
people to seek guidance regarding to your child.

In my own experiences, the type of parenting style is authoritative style. They
have a clear and reasonable expectations and limitations for us. For instance, my mother
would let me play and go with my friends outside but never too far from our house so that
she can see us easily and to make sure we are safe. She also encourages us to participate in
any school activities that depends on our skills and interests. She always told us the
golden rule saying “Do not do to others what you do not want them to do to you”.

2) As a future teacher, how would you establish good home-school collaboration? How can you
work well with the parents? How can you help them? How can they help you?
As a future teacher, I will build a good working relationship to the parents of my
students. Their collaboration would be a great help regards to home-school link. I will
make sure that they will do their job in providing the needs of their children. I can work
well with the parents through consulting the behavior of the child in their house. I can
help them through reporting the child’s progress and performance in school. A positive
relationship between parents and me as a teacher will be a stepping stone toward our
success. In turn, I will become a better teacher and second parent as parents are becoming
more skilled at nurturing and raising their children.
