Road, Chaddert England facts ort casal stat Te BOOAGD We)Winners don't always st Because it takes time to getitright Like the first time you stepped on a skateboard. You werent as good as you are now. But you leamt by your mistakes. To the point where you can go for it with the best, Its the same with making skateboards. For example, skateboard technology leaves much to [Link], trucks and wheels are all manufactured [Link] the hope that some might work together. But no one manufacturer makes all three, deliberately designed to bring out the best in each other. Except for Blaktrax. We have analysed every import- ant innovation. Leaming from both success and failure, Retaining the good and discarding the bad. The result has been Blaktrax boards, Traxion trucks and Surface Sucker wheels. All of which have been designed and manufactured to the highest possible standards to ensure that you can confidently go to the limits, Each represents the optimum. But put all three together and compare them with any other combination. You will notice the difference in [Link] a complete package, Blaktrax is not a compromise Its the solution you've been looking for Because Blaktrax has been built to be better. Nothing has been left to chance. Everything has been exhaustively [Link] by skaters. and by [Link] means that when you go for it, Blaktrax will go with you—all the way. is different Looks alone tell you that But for good reasons. Exhaustive research decided the design, Because the unique shape ofthe deck ensures that flexis not confined merely to the centre. Insteadit spreads fromthe centre through to either end. Thereby absorbing sudden shock. Withinstan- taneous and exact memory characteristics. Giving precise control in radical situations. The camber absorbs the rider's weight-so the deck is near flat in [Link] best position for optimum truck performance. The kicktail is subtle, but sufficient to give all the extra leverage youneed. However the deck is not just technically betterlts also more functional Handstands, nose wheelies, christies, endovers —all come easier Touching Blaktrax confirms the care, expertise and craftsmanship that has gone into its construction and design. The three carefully selected maple veneers are epoxy impregnated and bonded The grain of two run lengthwise for stability. The other is cross-Grained, So the flex is only in one direction to avoid twisting, ‘The deck itself is enclosed in a multi-stranded fibre-glass reinforced envelope before being completely bonded and sealed with high quality epoxy resin The result is so strong that itneeds to be trimmed to its final shape by a diamond cutter ‘And, finally there is a near-overall covering of aluminium oxide friction pad. Giving grip right up tothe edge of the deck where its needed.Surface Sucker wheels offer a startling combination sf speed, resilience and grip. Thanks to acarefully le thane compound, Derived only after siderable research. And selected for elasticity nubberiness and even wear Giving a wheel unquestionably ahead of its competition Because,as with everything we produce, considerable care and thought has gone into the design of Surface Sucker wheels For example, he bearing placement is widerthan in many wheels, A full %" In order to spread the load more effec- ively. And it's positioned nearer to the centre of the heel, which helps to ensure thatiit rolls fast ‘The proof is in the performance. trucks have their axis where it should be. [TRAX ION] ‘through the centre of the pivotand the @ bottom rubber Because, anywhere else, and unnecessary friction is placed on the pivot. Which slows response,as other manufacturers have discovered to their cost _. By getting the geometry right. Traxion trucks tum faster smoother,ai improved control. Cast froma magnesium/aluminium alloy, chosen for its combination of strength, lightness and consistency, the tricks have more metal where its needed, Around the baseplate mounts pivot housing, axle unit, and action bolt retaining wells Fully cured and heat-treated for optimum tensile strength. The axle is a heat-treated carbon-silicon/ manganese alloy But, unlike most designs, its not simply drilled and pressed into the [Link] cast in situ as a continuous unit So the axle housing shrinks onto the axle to create an exceptionally tightly bonded and integral product offering greatly increased strength. Additionally every rubber used in a Traxion truck is individually moulded, burnished, and trimmed by hand. And, because of their very high natural rubber con- tent and resilient formulation, they compress smoothly and evenly, Guaranteeing smooth action, fast rebound and long life. In fact, the trucks themselves are guaranteed, unconditionally for if. [tried out the Carlsbad Bowl while I was there, which w and round. As goes, Skate City is pr. good — anything else so heavy is more likely to be pool. The first time I went, there was hardly anyone ling the deepest bowl, we were practically the only ones re, just carving around going up to the lip and down ‘gtin. Now I go to Meanwhile Gardens or a couple of secret pools I know of which are drained in winter.” ‘Adam likes bowlriding and dowshill speed riding best, id doesn't see much future for freestyle. “You ean only 0 so far with it — although have to be good at it at ‘the moment to stand chance in a competition, “England is well behind Casper Peacock, . , abra America, and as soon as we've caught up they'll be way ahead again, But we are the hottest in Europe. How did Ben Howard of Benjyboards get hold of so many of the best skaters for his team? ‘He was in the right place Controlled, carving agression from Adam Peacock at Meanwhile Gardens, lip grinding on the summit, at the right time, guess. But it's a great team, we're all good friends with spirit Adam is also a keen photographer, and is preciag he aeinlaue fo ome really hot pictures of his friends in action ober Ve 28 Skateboard!DANNY ACTON-BOND. Danny is 15 and can usually be found skating down the sweeping road through Ashton Park in Bristol. He's been skating since last Christmas, in which time he’s had four boards — his latest being a Rocker deck with Mid and Powerfle It’s the best freestyle and bank board I could find, The deck is curved to lower the centre of gravity, and give better turning ability. It's like the flex has been frozen into it. My main interests are bank riding and igh just recently I've got into freestyle, I rode Skitel Hitchcock’ abit when Bristol. 1 bank riding didn’t impress me all that much, although Mike Weed’s freestyle did, His tictac h lot of style. Now I'm do Samoan squats and kickflips. I like riding skateparks such as Skate City, but I get bored with them quickly. I particularly like doing lip and wood slides. Danny came third in the speed event in his age group at Crystal Palace, and he’s been practicing every night for the local heat of the Nationwide contest, He Jeremy Henderson, making th rides in Ashton Park speed runs, but fave secret place known as the dam for some hairy bank riding. “The dam has got very steep banks and 6ft high speed bumps on it, but there's water at the bottom, like to lip slide around the top. About ten of us ride there, don’t worry about style while I'm riding, and I don't try to copy anyone else, 1 40 admire Simon Napper, though. JEREMY HENDERSON The number one jetsetting skateboarder in Britain has to be London's Jeremy Henderson! He pops back and forth to America quite regularly to see relations (he lived there for ten yeats) 30 Who better to assess the relative progress of the UK/ USA scenes. He sees many differences. To start with he els that skateboarding in States just happened and en kept going on its merry way. Over here everything has been much more organised In America, too, Jeremy finds a certain freedom in just being ‘one of the crowd, In Britain, those same skate- decisions at Skate City’s Black Bowl Danny board skills stamp him out as the skaters skater. He's 14 years old and has only been Fiding for a year and a half Six months of that time was tracing wet lines in Ashtop Park spent in the USA — and th experience certainly shows! Jere Tracke: ucks and whe either Powerflex or Tun Rocks. Rocks are something of a rarety in Britain, both Jeremy and his close friend, John Sablosky will testify tot aet that, when it comes to bowl riding, the wheels a speedy and grip like limpets He likes ramp-iding — in par- ticular the Hobie and Benji dels. — and he makes no bones about being a real fan the Skate City Black Bowl Fora while he also rode the Jengendary Dust Bow! in Croydon — till the owners decided things were getting out of hand? In America, like many other skaters, Jeremy searches out pools and pipes for the real thrills. But when he's heading for a bow! there's only one that really offers what he wants Uplands. And judging by the performance he put in at the World Championships at Long Beach, California, he's {thot contender for the World Title, as well. The top American skaters seem to think so. They showed their appreciation and liking for hhim with a great display of clapping and whistling when hhismame was announced. But then Aki is an old friend and a highly respected one after he took tenth place at the San Diego World Championship two years ago and he'd only been skating for six months! ‘Skateboarding took a hold in Japan about three years ago, and they already have three skateparks. Unfortunately, the builders didn’t really have a clue about the sport, and so they built super huge pools, with walls over 4 metres high and with such steep verticals they are virtually impossible to ride successfully. The Japanese Skateboarding Association petered out through lack of support, and as of now they have no publications on the subject. But they do have 30,000 skaters, and an annual contest which Aki has won every “if I could stay in the States longer," Aki told us, teckon I could soon beat them all, especially in freestyle.” ‘AKI certainly turned out a good performance in the Long Beach freestyle event, even though he'd only learnt 4 routine two days before hand! It turns when the truck turns, motor drives one of the ack wheels by means of a chain. ‘Down in Bristol the notorboard industry is also aking off. John White has produced a slightly different Wehiele which has a motos mounted underneath the deck, This isa much neater design, enabling the back foot toreach the kicktail for tricks. Unfortunately this arrangement also makes the air intake rather vulnerable 10 dirt intake, but John hopes to iron this problem out. In fact he expects to have a Mark Two version available for sale in the next few months, Price to be decided. Cast your skate to the wind Take a wide open tarmac like a disused airfield, a brisk wind and a sailing skate board and you have the perfect ingredients for one of skateboarding’s more exciting spinoffs. Pete Christopherson, ‘whose skateboarding history includes three knockouts and many another hairy experiences, recently intro- duced us to this new diversion at an airfield on the outskirts of Bristol. ‘The beauty of the equipment is its simplicity. A normal skateboard deck is converted to take a sal by simply serewing a plastic socket cup near the front truck. Insert the mast with its wishbone boom and sail and you're off. Even with a Telatively smal sail area the power of the wind is pretty formidable and the board accelerates very rapidly. Controlling the machine is largely a question of the rider’s strength apainst the sail and even a five minute ride is back breaking feat But the thrill is huge and if the land being used is limited in size, its possible to “tack the eraft so as to sal in & cite Bristol Skateboard Centre, along with theie sister company, the Winderaft Co., 42 Skateboard? are developing the technology Of the sailing skateboard with their knowledge of wind. surfing, the new sport which is exploding on the seas almost as fast 2s skate boarding on dry land. They have already built a “and- board! which fits the same sail and rides over rough terrain, Fireball wheels road test A fair amount of excitement ‘was whipped up by our tion of these new, spherical ‘wheels two issues back The first interesting ‘measurement one comes up with is the sheer size of this wheel. It's diameter is a full 75mm — a real monst height which one doesn’t really appreciate when viewing the wheel from its side, The second point worth ‘ting is that, in spite of overall width of 30mm, the ‘width actually used in i skating amounts to just abe 20mm. The remaining 30mm Only really comes into play ‘when the board is slammed into a powerslide, The most stunning Property of the Fireball, and ‘One which one doesn’t normally refer to when describing a wheel's performance, i its turning response, I slotted my set on toa pair of Bennett Pro Ads ‘which had previously housed four Yoyos. The Bennetts ‘weren't very well run in the rubbers weee stil a little ‘on the stiff side, Suddenly 1 felt as if | was skating on different trucks, The Fireballs ‘seem just to roll into the direction of the turn without ‘any effort. With this par- ticular design, the answer is no. I was using a half inch riser with the Yoyos (60mm diameter) but there was no need for a the wheel measures only 59mm, diameter, and even in tight tums there is no rub-out Looner Landskates, who make the Fireball, tell me that a new 80 durometer formula is being developed. They are also working on a 60mm diameter version to be launehed soon Rad Pads diminish circles Ever thought of making your trucks tuen smaller circles? Not a bad idea if you lke tackling impossible slalom courses or doing rapid U- tums in busy skateparks, ‘There are two ways OF making your trucks turn more tightly. One method is to shift your trucks closer together. This has one draw. back — if you take it too far you'llend up with a see-saw. Alternatively how about ing wedge-shaped riser is? It may sound a strange idea if you haven't seen them before but the thinking behind them is quite simple and sensible, A truck is normally serewed an to a deck so that the deck and base plate are parallel, But if You tilt the trucks forwards dr backwards itis possible to alter their turning Fadius Try this simple experiment and you'll see what I mean. Grab your skateboard and tip iton to its front wheels (a manual nose-whecli!). Tilt the deck from side to side and you should find thatthe tek turns with much les effort than when all four wheels are on the ground The feason is that you are applying extra leverage to the truck The same effect is obtained if wedge risers are Fitted so that their t face inwards under If they are fitted in opposite way (with the thin Below: Rad Pads fitted in these Doutions produce ner thtsides facing inwards) the turning cirele of the trucks is increased and the board is stabilised, Rad Pads are the only wedge risers you can bu they're pretty pricey, b they do work, Basically they come in three different ‘Systems”, There are wedges of different angles and two different materials for alternative ltardness (rubber or urethane), The most popular use of Rad Pads is as we've shown in the photo to increase the turning power of a slalom board, but either pad can be fitted th ‘other way around to suit your preferences. Another popular use is as an erative to normal riser for eliminating rub-outs A Rad Pad cures tub Remove the rubbers and clean them with detergent. Once | dry, leave them off the trucks until you next use the board. | & To some extent this will allow the rubbers to expand and | reaume their original state. ‘Skateboard! 513, When re-assembling your trucks there are three important points to remember. Firstly beware the danger of stripping the thread of the baseplate by over tightening. Secondly. ‘your skateboard, the king pin lock mut must Screw the king pin lock nut Foasely on to the king pin so that | always be tight against the base plate. Carving the lip on three wheels is not to be recommended! These nuts have a strictly limited life so those prone to frequent wheel changing would be well advised to check nuts regulary, Make sure, t00, they are always fully screwed om the ale, I the nylon fails o reach the thread, she mus will not Tock 4. When screwing the king pin into the baseplate, make sure 's hard to turn, check | The good news is that Skateboard! is currently developing a it has jammed against | test programme for skateboard trucks. An unlucky fall ‘ean shake your confidence for weeks, apart from to live with the paia of {njuries. With a full set of pads selling at anything up to £15.00, s0 far your precious elbows and knees will probably have had to do ‘without some much needed protection. All is not lost though, because Skateboard! is going to show you how to make a set of pads which are tough and long-lasting, and ‘will stay looking smart even after a few dozen falls. They ost a fraction of what you'd pay in a shop (that’s if you can actually find any, of course!), The really good thing ‘about these pads is that, because you'te maki yourself, you ean bui Sort of design into th making them personal and The end result ~ healthy protection the inexpensive way something to be proud of. What you will need to make them is a heavy vinyl (or something similar); a metre length should be easily nough. The stuff [use is quilted with a thin layer of foam, which is ideal, but that cost me about £2.00, you sould probably get an off-cut for half that price. Large hardware shops keep this sort of material because its usual use is for covering chairs. The other thing you'll need is some foam rubber, preferably the firmest you cam get. Get this from a hardware shop 190, although it pays to have look round the dustbins as it's a common packing material. With a needfe and thread and some glue suitable for sticking foam rubber, that’s all you need With luck, the whole lot shouldn't come to more than £3.00. Okay, if you've got the | tight against your arm. Mark | the vinyl where it overlaps materials together, then we'll start, First measure around cone arm (1) just above and just below your elbow. This will be the width of your pad. Now decide how much of your arm you want the pad to cover — about halfway down your forearm is as long 4s you need make them. With these two measurements, mark out a square (2) on the back of the vinyl, adding two inches tothe width measure trent. Cut this shape out, and hold it atound your ar this stage it should overap by about two inches, ‘Now turn under the edges of the length side (3) and sew up. Try the pad on again, this time pulling it wth a penel, and then turn the pad inside out (that foamside outwards) and se along this seam (4) just inside the peneil mirk, Pull the pad fightside out, try it on and you should have a perfect pad? It feels litle loose, {urn it inside out again and ree the two ends a litle tighter. Now make the oth one inthe same way IE you feel like having a go at sewing some sttpes oF decoration on the pads, the time to do itis just after you've eat out the vinyl and before you've stuck the foam on, Just a couple of stripes in 4 different colour make all the difference. Of course you could also put your name on them — or perhaps a silhouette ofa skater. In fact, whatever you want! The knee pads are made in a srlar way to the arm pads although, as the plctare shows, they are more diamond shaped, with a narrower strip a the back. Another good idea isto make them detachable, using buttons, vlero or poppers Altematively you could make them ‘pull on/ pl off by using elastic. Again measure above your knee,(S)) mark on the vinyl andcut | ‘out, Stick the foam rubber | fon, then taper the two widthways,as shown.(6)Decide which type of fastener you are going to use at the back, then tum under the edges accordingly. If the ‘alternative’ method of astening is used, then only cone narrow end is needed. (7) ‘And that's it; a full set of pads that will protect you for along time to come. If you do tear one, just stick a Square of vinyl on all the pads | to keep them looking smart. Feeling a bit overawed at all the ‘technicalities’. Then try and talk your mum/gitl friend into making ther. For persuasion try the line that it's easier than sewing up rips in jeans! Of course you're going to need some gloves. Wel, several readers have written to say that the super- tough variety from gardening shops are cheap and very good: insert a foam pad in each of the palms, though. So far as helmets are concerned, it’s doubtful that any real money-saving improvisation can be done. The shaping and design of protective headgear is fairly critical so the answer haas to be to invest in one of the proprietary brands. ‘Once you're fully kitted out, you'll be amazed at what it does for your confidence, Here's to "burger-free Sad RTA Aa Skateboard! $3pat nance ures. gen is aura HEATGd.
