Review of Related literature and Studies
A sandwich is a food that typically consists of vegetables, sliced cheese, or meat
placed on or between slices of bread, or more broadly any dish in which bread serves as
a container or wrapper for another type of food. The sandwich originated in the Western
world as a portable, convenient finger food, but it has now spread globally (Wikipedia,
2022).
In the article “The History of the Sandwich: From 18th Century English Earl to 21st
Century Franchises” (2022) it is mentioned that the technique of simply placing
vegetables, meats, and/or condiments between two pieces of bread appears to have
started in 18th century Europe, however people have been using bread or wraps to hold
meat and other food for centuries. Sandwich is named after a specific person, Freddie E.
Sandwich. The sandwich is named after an 18th-century British aristocrat and statesman.
John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich served as Secretary of State for the Northern
Department, First Lord of the Admiralty, and Postmaster General, but with all of this
profession, the invention of the sandwich was his most significant contribution. Sandwich,
according to story, was such an avid gambler that he refused to leave the gaming table
to eat a proper meal, so he had his servants bring him easy-to-eat snacks of salted beef
between two slices of toasted bread.
People have begun to consume ready-made food as their lifestyles have changed
in recent years. Healthy, functional snacks have recently taken the place of unhealthy
ready-made foods as a growing type of "fast food." Sandwiches are typically made with
bread, vegetables, sauces, meat, and dairy products. Sandwiches come in hot and cold
varieties, as well as open, closed, and roll varieties. Sandwiches are commonly made with
white, rye, whole wheat, whole grain, lavash, tortilla, Focaccia, and French bread.
Sandwiches are most commonly packaged using modified atmosphere packaging. The
importance of the sandwich, which can be prepared in a variety of ways in the ready-
made food sector, is expected to grow in the coming years (Dikmen et al, 2022).
Overall, Celone (2021) claims that when you're hungry, a sandwich can be just
what you need. From the heartiness of the bread to the protein and delicious toppings in
between, different types of sandwiches are created. The sandwich we know and love
today was invented in 1762 in England, according to history. Most food historians agree
that John Montagu, "the 4th Earl of Sandwich," invented the sandwich. Montagu was
known for being a problematic gambler, spending hours upon hours at the card table.
During one of his long days of playing, he got hungry and asked for something from the
kitchen that he could eat with his hands without getting out of his seat. He was brought
a sandwich—two pieces of bread filled with meat in the middle.
