Jennifer Doudna: CRISPR Pioneer Hero

Blake Fuller chose Jennifer Doudna as their modern-day hero for creating gene editing technology. Jennifer, along with her partner Emmanuelle Charpentier, was awarded the Nobel Prize for developing CRISPR, which allows for precise edits to genomes and is used to eliminate diseases in humans, plants, and animals. The technology is planned to treat many currently untreatable disabilities and diseases in the future. Jennifer's creation has had an immense impact on medicine and biology research, as it has become widely used in laboratories worldwide. Overall, Jennifer is considered a hero for the many lives her technology will affect for years to come through new discoveries.

Modern Day Hero assignment

For my modern-day hero, I chose Jennifer Doudna, an American biochemist from the University

of California. Jennifer was awarded the Nobel Prize along with her partner, Emmanuelle

Charpentier, for the creation of gene editing technology. The technology allows precise edits to

the genome and is used to help alter human, plant, and animal genes to eliminate diseases.

Furthermore, in the future, the software is planned to treat many non-curable disabilities and

diseases, such as blindness and cancer. The tech swiftly became a viral necessity in all laboratories

around the world. As Jocelyn Kaiser states, “the first team to disable a disease gene directly in a

person through an infusion of the genome editor CRISPR reported yesterday that levels of the

toxic protein made by the gene dropped as much as 93% for many months.” This quote portrays

the unbelievable accomplishment and impact Jennifer and her team have made on the future of

medicine and chemistry. Overall, Jennifer is a hero because of the many lives and new discoveries

her technology will affect for many years to come.
