Quality is not about quality control, quality circles, or inspection or recommendation


schemes; rather, it is about creating a total commitment at every level of the business
(Nellist, 1992).

The term TQM refers to a "strategic approach that incorporates everyone in an organisation
in a continuous endeavour to enhance quality and achieve customer satisfaction." It is a
customer-focused mindset that works to consistently raise all levels of the organization's
performance and meet or exceed customers' expectations (Juran 1988).
The globe has adopted TQM to a great extent. Several businesses have concluded that
implementing TQM effectively can increase their ability to compete and give them
competitive advantages.
Providing training and support for staff is an integral part of the approach to quality at Coca-
Cola. (Wilson & Corry, 1997)
QA tests are performed using in-line instrumentation, and the process is entirely computer-
controlled. "Just-in-time" deliveries of raw materials are made for production (Nellist, 1992).
There are seven main computer systems that the factory heavily depends on:
(1) The Materials Management System, which essentially functions as an MRP system, gives
management access to a reactive factory planning system that ensures minimal inventory
levels, an integrated materials system, and improved supplier control.
(2) CIM is supported by data from the Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition (SCADA)
system. It tracks machine breakdowns and generates data, determines yields and
efficiencies at every level of production, and delivers precise and timely stock updates.
3) By complete location control, stock rotation, and delivery tracking, the warehouse
management system ensures control of movement and storage inside the warehouse area.
It has an algorithm that makes the best use of the available warehouse space and ensures
efficient utilisation of those resources. During peak production periods, the system manages
about 15,000 pallet moves each day. Radio data terminals are used for communication with
the warehouse vehicles.
(4) The Preventative Maintenance System offers a reactive planning framework designed to
lower engineering inventories and line downtime while increasing maintenance activity
productivity.
(5) All QC data from automated and human testing points are stored in the quality system.
On all quality metrics, it generates shift reports and SPC trend data.
(6) The site's different loading and unloading operations are scheduled and managed by the
Vehicle Movement Control system. It raises all documentation, keeps track of all deliveries
and despatches, and gives a record.
(7) The Personnel System creates a better planning tool that takes into account the
availability of labour skills (Nellist, 1992)
Quality and cooperation are evident. All employees are divided into specialised teams, each
of which oversees the tasks that fall under its purview. The canning line team, for example,
is accountable for the output of the line, the effective use of resources, the quality of the
product, the maintenance of the line, engineering changes to the line, and the operation
and upkeep of the computer systems. The tasks assigned to technical operators have been
intentionally created to be far more varied, integrating planning and execution as well as
efforts to improve operations rather than just maintain them (Nellist, 1992)
Coca-Cola uses a Questar database system, which enables them to run inspections on the
line. For instance, before the process begins, a bill of materials is produced for each line, and
all supplies are coded. By doing this, it is ensured that the right materials are used. This
check, which aims to remove issues from the production line, is frequently audited. The
level of evaluation of product quality wouldn't be possible without this system. The
packaging and carbonation of the product are also checked for quality, and an operator
keeps track of the results to make sure they adhere to regulations.
