UNDERPAID MEDICAL WORKERS
IN THE PHILIPPINES
Introduction
The country has experienced much hardship due to the death of many people,
particularly in the medical field. The World Health Organization announced that the
virus's origin was in Wuhan, China, and the spread of COVID-19 globally occurred on
March 11, 2020. Medical personnel became in demand during the surge of this virus,
but their salaries were higher for the risks and hazards they must confront. As a result,
most of the staff resigned and applied to other countries to seek high-paying jobs and
fresh opportunities to enhance their work experience. This will result in a lack of
medical workforce in the nation, causing a ripple effect that will affect the community's
ability to seek urgent and intensive medical care. Additionally, the government's
lethargy towards our front-line workers has caused the medical sector to be affected by
the deficiency of the health department, leading to unpolished morale and encouraging
front-liners to go overseas and meet their financial needs.

Governance is an important element of a successful
nation, and in the field of medicine, the medical workers
need to be more emphasized due to poor governance.
The Department of Health's ineffective management is
one of the reasons why the attentiveness of the health
workers is not perceived, and their voices need to be
heard. The front-liners should be one of the
indispensable liabilities in a pandemic, as they have a
high risk of losing their lives and can provide a solution.
Government apathy towards
medical workers impact the
country’s health services
The government of the Philippines is significant to our daily
lives, particularly in the area of health and the services it
distributes. However, due to the government's lack of
interest in medical professionals, many have decided to
pursue and perpetuate their profession in countries that
value them more. This has caused a shortage of medical
professionals, leading to a lack of staff, low salary, and
unstable working environment. If the Philippine government
keeps acting this way, the country's health services will
decline and the people may no longer acknowledge the
value of each medical worker. This could put the safety and
well-being of the Filipino people in danger.

The researchers believe that our democratic government should focus on providing and
improving medical personnel to improve our healthcare structure. 98% of medical workers
prefer better payroll and hazard pay, and the government should increase hazard pay and
other forms of financial assistance. Additionally, the administration should develop
legislation to help medical professionals stay in the Philippines and secure long-term careers.
These proposals will improve the healthcare system and the lives of every Filipino, especially
those at the bottom of society. The proposed changes proposed by this research and the
UHC's goal could improve life and achieve fundamental healthcare rights for Filipinos,
particularly the poorest of the poor.
The UHC aims to attain the highest standard of healthcare services for Filipinos that are
accessible, available, and cost-effective. Medical workers are undervalued and underpaid,
and the government's apathy and contribution to universal health care is evident during the
pandemic. The government should increase the payroll of medical workers to compensate
them for the risks they face in their everyday lives. This research is an instrument to voice out
the health professionals' grievances against the low salary they get, and if not addressed, the
corruption cycle will continue.
Conclusion
The research aims to address four primary questions: in what way
medical workers are undervalued, the improvements the government
can make, the influence of the government's apathy on it, and its
contribution to universal health care. It also looks at how medical
workers have left the Philippines and worked abroad to earn the
wages they rightfully deserve, and how it affects the whole
community and weak medical management. The research seeks to
get attention from the government and to voice out the health
professionals' grievances against the low salary they get.
