Patterns of Mathematics in Nature

The document provides instructions for an activity where students are asked to observe patterns in their surroundings like objects, plants, and buildings. They are to take a photo of one pattern that catches their attention, describe what pattern they see, and explain how mathematics is related to the arrangement. It then gives an example of a flower the student noticed that had 5 petals, and explains how the number of petals in many flowers follows the Fibonacci sequence. This proves that nature incorporates mathematical patterns.

ACTIVITY 1
Go out and observe your surroundings and look for patterns that exist in objects, plants,
trees, buildings, etc. Take a photo of the pattern that catches your attention, describe the
pattern that you perceive and write a brief explanation how mathematics is embedded
in that arrangement. (Note: The teacher and the students may decide on the date of
submission of this activity).

This particular flower that bloomed in our front yard is one of

nature’s creatures which I perceive to have a pattern. Most
notably the number of their petals. This one has 5 petals.
The number of petals in different flowers are always the
following: 3,5,8,13,.. and so on. This sequence is known in
mathematics as the Fibonacci sequence. All flowers follow this
pattern in their petals. This simply proves that nature follows a numerical pattern. This fact
alone has increased significantly the importance of mathematics in one’s life, knowing that
numerical pattern patterns exist everywhere I look. Moreover, one will get to appreciate
mathematics more as it reveals the beauty of these patterns expressed in nature

The Fibonacci sequence manifests in the petal arrangement of flowers through numbers such as 3, 5, 8, and 13, which commonly represent the number of petals seen in different flowers. This pattern illustrates that nature follows a specific numerical arrangement, highlighting the intrinsic connection between mathematics and natural structures. It shows that mathematics is not merely abstract, but is embedded in the natural world, thereby revealing the beauty and ubiquity of mathematical patterns in nature .
