Abstract

Procrastination is the deliberate postponement of a desired course of action in

spite of the negative consequences of doing so. The present study experimentally

investigated the effect of procrastination on the academic performance of the Grade

10- St. Peter Students in Holy Cross of Babak Inc. This quantitative study uses a

survey to determine what is the significant relationship between procrastination and

students’ academic performance. Our survey was administered to 45 respondents to

gather data about our alternative hypothesis and null hypothesis associated with the

research questions. Our study shows that 69% of our respondents engaged in

procrastination and 87% of them says that there is a significant relationship between

academic procrastination and their academic performances. The majority of our

respondents experienced a greater negative impact from procrastinating, according

to the overall results of our survey. Given that procrastination is a descriptive factor

in academic accomplishment, teachers and students can use the findings of this

study to detect procrastinating behavior and related factors.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Procrastination is a widely phenomenon that affects the productivity of

one’s self. According to William James in an 1886 letter to fellow psychologist

Carl Stumpf, “Nothing (is) so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an

uncompleted task”. (James, H. 1926, p 247)

The word procrastination originates from the Latin term ‘procrastinatus”

which is divided into two parts. The first part “pro” means “Forward” and the

second part “crastinatus” means “of tomorrow” (Klein, E. 1971). Thus, delaying

things till tomorrow is what procrastination in translation defines.

Procrastination is a behavior that everyone can relate to and had

experienced, hence there are many definitions available. A commonly used

definition in procrastination research is “the putting off that which is necessary

to reach some goal” (Lay, 1986, p. 475).

Some additional common definitions are “The tendency to delay or

completely avoid responsibilities, decision, or tasks that need to be done”

(Tuckman & sexton, 1986 p. 503). In addition, the Oxford English Dictionary

defines procrastination as “the action or habit of postponing or putting

something off”. And "to be slow or late about doing something that should be

done; to delay doing something until a later time because you do not want to do

it, because you are lazy etc.” (Marriam -Webster Dictionary, n d.)

8
Furthermore, a typical human habit that has historically started in

preschool is procrastination. Another aspect of the definition is that

procrastination is “needless” in nature or avoidable, in addition to a person

intending to put off a task. This idea is necessary because some people

purposefully put off finishing a task so they can do more crucial ones. Delaying

work on lesser or less significant activities would therefore not be regarded as

procrastination when more important tasks need to be finished. One is

effectively managing their time when they put off finishing the little task.

((Jassen, J. O. (2015)). Moreover, academic procrastination might have a

detrimental impact on a student’s life due to the multitude of examinations, term

papers and projects during his or her scholarly career. Academic

procrastination is like general procrastination in that it is negatively related to

self-efficacy and life satisfaction and also positive related to stress and mental

health (Klingsleck, K.B. (2013)).

Procrastination has positive and negative impact to the educational

attainment of the students that may influence their performance quality and

may lead to a poor or excellent performance result. This is one of the reasons

why the researchers pushed it in order to further investigate and determine the

influence of academic procrastination on the performance quality of the Grade

10 St. Peter students in the Holy Cross of Babak Inc.

9
Statistical Notation for Statistical Hypothesis Below:

Ho= There is no significant relationship between the academic

procrastination and performance quality of the Grade 10 St. Peter Students.

Ha= There is significant relationship between the academic procrastination

and performance quality of the Grade 10 St. Peter Students.

English Statement for Statistical Hypothesis Below:

Null Hypothesis: There is no significant between the academic

procrastination and performance quality of the Grade 10 St. Peter Students.

Alternative Hypothesis: There is significant relationship between the

academic procrastination and performance quality of the Grade 10 St. Peter

Students.

10
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study will evaluate and determine the influence of academic

procrastination on the performance quality of the grade 10 St. Peter students of

the Holy Cross of Babak Inc. Due to the issue that procrastination affects the

students' performance quality and causes them to put off their academic work.

The researchers come up with the following problem:

General Problem: Academic Procrastination: A Factor Influencing the

Performance Quality of Grade 10 St. Peter students.

Sub problem:

1. Procrastination’s effectiveness as a study technique for the students.

2. Either the benefits overpower the harmful effects, or its harmful effects be

more evident than the benefits it could hand to the students.

3. Does academic procrastination work to improve performance and motivation,

under what conditions? Does it give satisfaction or disappointment?

11
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The importance of this study is to analyze and understand the influence

of procrastination on the performance quality of the students and help them

overcome if it gives negative impact on their academic performances.

Understanding procrastination will provide Grade 10 students a time to analyze

the influence of procrastination on their studies and even help them improved

their academic achievement. The students might require reviewing the result of

this research in hope they would be encouraged to submit assignments on or

before the assignment dates.

As a result of overcoming procrastination, students are more likely to

complete their work meticulously and make crucial decisions on time. Students

who received intervention may find it easier to manage their time and develop

better study habits. Students’ procrastination is a common occurrence that

occurs throughout the school year. This study focuses on the students’

perspective on why they engage in procrastination, as well as determining

academic related task and its effect on students’ academic performance. The

outcome of this study may be used as a reference to provide the best approach

to help the students overcome academic challenges associated with delaying

tendencies.

This study will serve as a guide for teachers in determining what efforts

they may take to help their pupils overcome procrastination. This research will

also help parents how to form stronger bonds with their kids in order to handle

12
the problems that they experience. This research will assist student become

more self-aware of the variables that cause them to delay. This study will also

help individuals learn about the consequences of academic procrastination on

academic achievements and determine if procrastination helpful or bad for

them. This study’s findings may provide officials with information that will allow

them to solve the academic challenges of the students.

13
SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS

The goal of this study is to comprehend why procrastination is so

prevalent among students and to pinpoint its origins and effects. Therefore, the

study's primary audience is the Grade 10 St. Peter students. The survey will be

administrated by the researchers to 45 students coming from the grade 10 St.

Peter. The researchers will be questioning 22 females and 23 males on the

factor relating to academic procrastination and its influence to their academic

performances.

Due to the trustworthy knowledge of the students and the researcher's

ability to accept both their complaints and compliments, the researchers will be

able to quickly collect the data that needed in order to achieve their goals.

Furthermore, the interview will take place inside the premises of Holy Cross of

Babak Inc. The respondents will be having the same questionnaires to answer.

The study will be limited by the respondent’s beliefs, understanding, and

experienced regarding the influence of academic procrastination on

performance quality of the students.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the review related literature from both local and

foreign sources. Additionally, this chapter includes the theoretical framework

and conceptual framework that will provide further information about the study

and will give clarity and deeper understanding.

FOREIGN SOURCES

Procrastination is a habit and can be considered by some students as

student syndrome when learning becomes an excuse not to take action. While

others use it as a study technique where students think that when the

deadline is approaching their minds and knowledge works better under the

pressure.

According to Itamar Shatz, PhD, Lecturer- University of Cambridge,

(2018), students at all levels are impacted by the serious and pervasive issue

of procrastination. There are many factors to take into account when

determining why students put things off. Due to the fact that different students

delay assignments for various reasons, the issue is also complicated. Student

procrastination is very prevalent. According to studies, approximately 50% of

college students claim to procrastinate consistently and in a way that is

problematic, approximately 75% think they procrastinate, and approximately

80%–95% of students procrastinate to some extent. Procrastination is also

17
widespread among other student populations, including those in elementary

school, middle school, and graduate school.

Students delay tasks because their motivation and self-control are

outweighed by problems like fatigue and anxiety. Students, in particular, rely

heavily on their self-control to motivate themselves to study or complete

assignments. Additionally, their motivation occasionally serves as a support

for their self-control by enabling them to complete tasks quickly. This explains

why many students persistently put off studying and completing their

assignments, despite having the necessary drive and motivation. (Shatz, I.

PhD, Lecturer- University of Cambridge, (2018)).

The well-being of a person is the main source of productivity and

motivation. In fact, there are a lot of reasons behind student’s procrastination

habit but the most dominant factor is mental health. For instance, anxiety,

depression and under pressure is some of the reasons for students'

discouragement that may lead to delaying important tasks and cramming it

later. This may result to dissatisfaction.

Furthermore, modern technology makes it increasingly easier for

people to procrastinate. In the study conducted by Michael Lee, student from

Oakton high school, 100% of the students surveyed by the researcher agreed

that they are using gadgets such as cellphone, laptop, television and they

tend to procrastinate because of it. (Lee, M. (2018)). Subsequently, the author

indicated that technology does not completely reveal as the main reason

behind student’s procrastination habit. Additionally, students frequently use

modern technology as a educational tool to help them on a daily basis in

18
school. However, technology can be a driven distraction that can cause

procrastination and will affect the academic performance of the students.

Procrastination has long been considered a self-defeating and

debilitated practice by researchers and professionals. Dr. Al-mehsin and Dr.

Al-rbahaah Identifies the difference between pessimistic and optimistic

procrastinators. Those who are optimistic procrastinators list their intentions

but do not worry about it. Whether they take the targeted action now or in the

future, they are sure they will be successful in the end. In addition, they

underestimate the time required to complete their task and exaggerate their

progress and success prospects. On the other hand, pessimistic

procrastinators do fret about their tardiness. They are conscious of their

tendency to run late. However, because they are unsure of how to approach

the assignment, they continue to put it off. They believe they are incompetent

and worry that taking on the assignment will demonstrate this. Therefore, they

delay in order to prevent unpleasant situations. The researchers also observe

that pessimists tend to believe that their incidents are negative in the present

and the future and that these incidents are stronger than the positive ones. In

contrast, they also observe that optimists experience pressures with

adaptation because they immediately search for solutions. Optimistic

individuals are more committed in finding a solution, they also more positive

on the difficulties they encounter, and more effort-focused and they confront

them in a more realistic manner than pessimists. Additionally, they have the

desire to gain from their unpleasant experiences and to employ them in order

to better oneself. They also do their best in difficult circumstances, and their

19
optimistic outlook on life aids them in setting goals. Thus, optimism is a

powerful existing strategy to manage demands. (Dr. Al-mehsin, S. A., Dr. Al-

rbahaah, J. K. (2015)).

Nevertheless, procrastination is a widespread phenomenon that has

been negatively affecting students' performance quality. However, we cannot

deny the fact that procrastination is a choice, and you are aware that delaying

important task such as assignments, performance task, quizzes and written

works does not bring you any good but you do it anyway because you are

driven by your anxiety, lack of interest, and lack of time management.

Procrastination is a common issue that occurs throughout the school year and

there are many reasons why students procrastinate and each reason are

different in every individual.

Therefore, Gurumoorthy and Kumar (2019) study about impactful

motivational factors to overcome procrastination, explained that in order to

overcome procrastination habit one’s need to have a comprehensive

supplement and support provided by teachers, acknowledge every student

effort, advanced and updated syllabus, applied learning-more-hands-on-

learning, peer support, and material-reward. (Gurumoorthy, R., Kumar, N.

(2019). Overcoming procrastination not only depends on self-efficiency but

also needs environmental support to help you build a substructure towards

self-motivation, not just to solve procrastination but also to help eradicate self-

doubt in finishing a task on time.

LOCAL SOURCES

20
According to the study from the U.P. undergraduate at the college of

Home Economics (CHE), the reasons behind student procrastination habit are

underestimation of time, difficulty of the tasks, stress, anxiety, lack of sleep,

absence in class, and mediocre works. Researchers also includes the positive

outcomes of academic procrastination such as satisfactory outputs, better

performance, skills development, time for family, friends' leisure, rest, less

time spent doing a task, a sense of accomplishment, and self-handicapping.

This study was conducted on 100 CHE students from the University of the

Philippines Diliman. (Samson, J. T. (2010)). Subsequently, students are

motivated to procrastinate when tasks are piling up and their coping

mechanism is to delay it and to have enough time to meditate and rest before

doing the task. This often led to cramming and disappointment.

As explained by students from the Universidad de Manila,

Procrastination may be considered as a negative study habit and a facetious

issue yet it a widespread phenomenon that need to be addressed. He said

that individuals need to be able to pace themselves in a way that fits the

demands of high performance within a given time frame. It is important to

remember that taking a break is not the same as postponing tasks. Thus,

students should not overwork, but they also should not waste time on

activities that are not beneficial. (Aquino, L., Balay, H. L., Eugenio, J. R. M.,

Jasmin, F. M., Macapagal, M., Sibayan, C. (2019))

Procrastination is a common issue that occurs throughout the school

year and there are many reasons why students procrastinate, and each

reason are different in every individual. Procrastination has numerous causes

and mainly occurs when people are afraid, apprehensive, or anxious about an

21
essential work that awaits them. People postpone in order to get rid of this

terrible feeling; they open a video game or go on social media instead. That

temporarily makes people feel better, but reality eventually catches up with

them. Procrastination is not laziness; it is a reaction to stress in our lives or

erroneous negative thoughts we have about ourselves. Don’t be too hard on

yourself if you procrastinate. Instead, consider whether your behavior is

related to fear, anxiety, ADHD, or another underlying condition.

Today’s college students must quickly complete a lot of educational

requirements that have been provided to them. The majority of them are able

to submit their requirements ahead of time, but others are unable to do so

because of internal (laziness, procrastination, task difficulties) or external

(high traffic) issues. Their academic performance is significantly impacted as

a result. Tarin and Rio (2015) states that College students struggle with

procrastination and motivation all the time at school. Students who

consistently put off tasks run the danger of performing poorly in class.

According to reports, procrastination has negative impacts and jeopardizes

students’ academic performance. And it became a barrier for those children

who become unmotivated and lose focus whenever an unfavorable incident

occurs at school. The results of the study conducted by the researchers

indicates that there is a significant relationship between Procrastination and

Achievement Goal Orientation. The results also indicated that Procrastination

was a predictor of student’s Academic Performance (GWA) in school.

Implications and future recommendations of this study are discussed. (Tarin,

C. A., Rio, M. C. (2015)).

22
In this citation, Procrastination is the predictor of student’s Academic

performance. In which, Majority of the students were significantly impacted

due to their internal and external issues that causes them to put off their work

and unable to do. That resulted to negatively impacts to their academic

performances. Every student struggle with procrastination that causes them to

delay their works. However, delaying work on lesser or less significant

activities would therefore not be regarded as procrastination when more

important tasks need to be finished.

The study conducted by students from polytechnic University of the

Philippines shows a discrepancy between parenting practices, academic

performance, and procrastination in the school. According to the findings,

students perform well academically, as shown by their GWA. A large

percentage of college students have an internal locus of control, meaning they

can influence the results of their activities. Parents are very demanding and

responsive to their children, but they also make time to hear their thoughts.

College students procrastinate on a moderate to high level, particularly when

it comes to the six areas of writing term papers, studying for tests, keeping up

with assignments, academic admin work, attendance tasks, and

extracurricular activities. Academic procrastination has an impact on students’

academic achievement, according to correlations. Low academic achievement

was the result of high academic procrastination. (Nartea, M., Samal, H.

(2020).

Accordingly, academic procrastination is a serious problem that occurs

on every student nowadays. Parents may sometimes a reason for students to

23
be pressured on school but they are more a motivation and guide for the

students to be responsible enough to finish their academic activities on time.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Academic Procrastination is the study’s independent variable and

performance Quality of the Grade 10 St. Peter students is the dependent

variable. In the first column the researchers identify the sex, school and

section of the respondents in order to collect the data properly. Whereas the

researchers used a questionnaires, interviews, and statistical analysis of data

in that serves as the research process that are shown in the second column.

This method is considered suitable to perceive the student whose involve with

academic procrastination and its impact to their performance quality.

Furthermore, the purpose of our research is to examine how procrastination

Chapter 3

Methodology
The purpose of this quantitative study is to survey students who engage on

procrastination and to know its impact on their performance quality. Specifically, the

intent of this dissertation was to explore whether it provide positive or negative

benefits on the academic attainment of the students. This chapter describes the

methods and procedure that the researchers will employ in the conduct of the study.

This section consists of the research study design, respondents of the study,

instrument of the study, data gathering procedure, and statistical tools and

techniques. Additionally, this chapter discusses the approach the researchers used

in order to collect the data and the analysis of the data collected. Thus, those data

serve as the main source to answer the problem of the study.

Research Design

This study involved a quantitative design to enhance the research and

make the study reliable and valid.

Quantitative design emphasizes objective measurements and the

statistical, mathematical, or numerical analysis of data collected through polls

questionnaires, and surveys, or by manipulating pre-existing statistical data

using computational techniques. The population of the present study was

Grade-10 students, St. Peter of the Holy Cross of Babak Inc. This research

study use two research designs or methods which are descriptive research and

Cross section. A descriptive research study described categories of information

26
such as gender or patterns of interaction by simply recording what is being

asked with the specific group that is under the study of the researcher.

Descriptive study report summary data such as measures of central tendency

including the mean and quantitative description. The cross-section is a type of

observational study. In the cross-sectional study, the researchers equally

assess participants’ exposures and outcomes or depended on the study that

was conducted which share other characteristics, such as grade level, school,

and educational background.

Sample and Sampling Techniques

The population of the study comprises Grade 10, St. Peter Students

enrolled in Holy Cross of Babak. The aim of the study is to interview 45 Grade

10 St. Peter Students that engaged in Academic Procrastination.

Sampling is the process of choosing representative units from a study’s

total population. The researchers will use a simple random sample and

systematic sampling as their sampling strategy. Every person in the population

has an equal probability of being chosen for your sample when simple random

sampling is used. Every person in the population is given a number when

systematic sampling is being done. The remaining members are chosen from a

predetermined interval after the first is selected at random. It is crucial how we

choose a sample of people to participate in our research. The population to

whom we may generalize our research findings will depend on how we choose

our participants. The method we employ to assign individuals to different

treatment conditions will decide whether there is bias in our treatment groups.

27
Instruments of the study

The questionnaires and surveys were the primary research tool in this

study. To obtain quantitative information, the researcher created self-

administered questionnaires for the data collection process. The questionnaire

was designed so that it will be simple for respondents to complete. The

Nominal Scale and Likert Scale were thus used to structure the set of

questionnaires. The majority of studies indicate that a nominal scale is merely a

categorization of data without any order or structure, as the name implies. It is

nominal to use a YES/NO scale when conducting research. There is no

hierarchy and no separation between the answers YES and NO. Likert scales,

also known as frequency scales or Likert-type scales, use fixed option

response forms and are used in the study to measure attitudes or opinions. The

respondents had options for their responses in this kind of questionnaire. As

respondents to the questions created by the researchers, Grade 10 St. Peter

Students of Holy Cross Of Babak, Inc. will participate in the surveys.

can be answered by Yes/No. Questions 8 to 10 are constructed using the Likert

scale method, it will be answered by harmful, beneficial, satisfaction,

disappointment, poorly and excellent. Lastly, test II questions are opinions and

own understanding of the respondents of the study.

Data Gathering Procedure

Before the conduct of the pilot study, the necessary consent and

permission were obtained from the principal of the school Holy Cross of Babak.

The researchers made sure that the privacy and security of the information

collected is safe and confidential. After obtaining consent and permission, the

questionnaire was floated out to the Grade-10, St. Peter who are the

respondents of the study. The questionnaire was given to 50 students, and they

were given 30 minutes to answer the questions. The data gathering served as

a basis for further enhancing the research tool and served to test its validity and

reliability.

According to how frequently the participants ticked each item, the data

collected from this study instrument was added together and processed for

interpretation. The study’s findings were supported by secondary resources

29
such as published papers and literature that the researchers used in addition to

primary data.

Statistical tools and techniques

The tools and techniques that the researcher used in order to interpret

and analyze the data collection are frequency and percentage distribution.

Additionally, the researchers used graphs in order to explain deeply the result

of the survey they conducted. In general, a percentage frequency distribution is

a representation of data that shows the proportion of observations for each

data point or collection of data points. The relative frequency of survey replies,

and other statistics are frequently expressed using this technique. Tables, bar

graphs, and pie charts are frequently used to represent the percentage

frequency distributions.

The stages for creating a percentage frequency distribution are as

follows: note the total number of observations; count the total number of

observations inside each data point or set of data points; and finally, divide the

total number of observations by the total number of observations. When using

percentage frequencies, it is important to keep in mind that the relative

frequency distribution is sometimes referred to as the percentage (%)

frequency distribution when percentage frequencies are utilized in it.

30
CHAPTER 4

Data Analysis

The purpose of this quantitative study was to survey students’

perceptions of the impact of academic procrastination on their performance

quality.

As we, researchers conducted this study about “Academic procrastination: A Factor

Influencing the Performance Quality of the Grade 10 St. Peter." We had two hypotheses

consisting of alternative and null hypotheses. As we performed the survey, we observed that

procrastination is a prominent habit among the study participants. Furthermore, they are

aware of what procrastination and its effect to their academic performance. It is noticeable

that students is engaging to this prevalent problem. Thus, we concluded that our research

study is an alternative hypothesis. As shown in the presentation of data analysis, majority of

the students agreed that procrastination has a negative impact on their academic

performance. The overall result of our survey proves that 87% of the study participants said

that procrastination has a significant effect on their academic performance. Otherwise, 13%

of them said that there is no significant relationship between their academic performance

and academic procrastination.

CHAPTER 5

This chapter contains the summary of findings, conclusions , and

recommendations of the whole study. The findings of the study is the part

where the discussion of detailed information can be found, thus it can be a

great help for the future researchers. Additionally, the conclusions and

recommendations can also be beneficial to the future researchers, students,

teacher, administration, and parents in order for them to be knowledgeable

about the impact of procrastination to the academic performance of the

students.

are aware of its consequences to their academic performance. The result

proves that procrastination is a threat to productivity and time management that

40
is a great factors that can help in achieving goals. Moreover, it is also proven

than procrastination has a significant relationship to academic procrastination.

Meanwhile, in table 1.2 shows that Procrastination does not bring anything

benefits to students instead it bring disappointment and this disappointment

often leads to low performance in school. It discourages students in excelling in

school because the habit they using does not bring any good to them. Hence,

based from the answers of the students procrastination is a factor that bring a

negative impact to their performance quality in school.

Conclusion

The study provided evidence to respond to the research topic which states: " Academic

procrastination: A Factor influencing the performance quality of the Grade 10 St Peter

students" It showed that the Academic Procrastination is a behavior that is extremely

prevalent in Grade 10 St peter students and is projected that 87% of students engage in it

on their academic performances. This study looked at a type of procrastination that is

referred to as active procrastination where students intentionally delay homework.

Specifically, this study hoped to support the hypothesis that students who actively

procrastinate has an alternative relationship with academic performance. Strength in this

study was the subject matter, since academic procrastination is a prevalent behavior for

among student it is an area of interest for students who are participating in data collection.

The weakness in this study is that it is limited in generalizability so that the findings cannot

be applied to the general population. Also, the sample size did represent the majority of

41
students on Grade 10 St peter. What the results show is that students who engage in active

procrastination may not be intrinsically motivated in their academic performance.

Throughout the data analysis, the researcher found out that procrastination occurs

for a variety of reasons, including cellphone use, watching movies, house works,

gaming, outdoor activities, and a lack of motivation. Students, on the other hand,

procrastinate due to personal issues such as laziness, difficulty answering the

assigned academic tasks, a lack of understanding and knowledge about the lessons,

and confusion about the assigned learning material. As a result, 87% of respondents

agreed that procrastination has a negative impact on their academic performance,

leading to lower grades and lower grades. Meanwhile, 13% of all respondents stated

that procrastination has no discernible effect on their academic performance, as they

continue to receive passing scores and grades despite their procrastination.

Recommendations

Future Researchers - Researchers should be aware of inflated self-report data in order to

enhance study design. Collect additional information and data on the topic at hand, as well

as any associated issues, to add to the current body of knowledge.

Students - Stay educated and conversant with procrastination, its effects, and its

causes. Assist in reducing procrastination in order to conveniently acquire academic

goals. Focus solely on your academics and complete your prerequisites as promptly

as possible so that you can pass them on time.

42
Teachers - Procrastination is frequent not just among students but also among

professionals. Use the deadlines as an incentive to undertake such tasks as soon as

possible. Assist learners in becoming accustomed with procrastination since it will

benefit them throughout their studies.

Administration - To educate learners, conduct procrastination seminars.

Familiarization can greatly diminish its occurrences, paving the path for a brighter

future for an adolescent.

Common questions

Powered by AI

The studies propose that procrastination can have both benefits and drawbacks. Some researchers argue that under certain conditions, procrastination may serve as a motivator or allow time for ideas to develop, potentially leading to creative solutions and refined work. However, this is contingent on specific factors such as the nature of the task, individual differences in stress tolerance, and the availability of external support. The drawbacks, however, are more commonly cited, including increased stress, reduced quality of work, missed deadlines, and lower overall academic performance. The determining factors between benefits and drawbacks include a student's time management skills, stress coping mechanisms, and personal motivation levels .

The study on procrastination among Grade 10 students utilized questionnaires, interviews, and statistical analyses to gather data on students' procrastination behaviors and the impact on their performance quality. By employing these diverse methodological approaches, researchers could gain both quantitative and qualitative insights into students' academic habits and outcomes. Questionnaires allowed for the collection of structured data across a larger sample, while interviews provided deeper insights into individual experiences and motivations. Statistical analyses helped in identifying correlations between procrastination and academic performance, leading to a comprehensive understanding of its effects .

Procrastination is prevalent among students due to a combination of internal and external factors, including a lack of motivation, poor time management, low self-efficacy, and avoidance of task-related anxiety. These factors lead students to delay important academic tasks in favor of less significant ones. The effects of procrastination on academic performance include increased stress, lower life satisfaction, and poorer academic outcomes, as seen in decreased grades and missed deadlines. Academic procrastination is negatively related to self-efficacy and positively related to stress, which can ultimately impact students' academic achievements and mental health .

Interventions can play a crucial role in helping students overcome academic procrastination by fostering time management skills, enhancing self-efficacy, and promoting intrinsic motivation. Effective interventions might include time management workshops, personalized coaching sessions, and the implementation of structured routines that encourage accountability. Cognitive-behavioral strategies can help students reframe negative thoughts about tasks, while motivational interviewing can boost intrinsic motivation by aligning academic tasks with personal values and goals. Additionally, peer support systems where students collaborate can provide mutual encouragement and decrease procrastination tendencies .

Academic procrastination is underpinned by several psychological theories, including the Temporal Motivation Theory, which posits that procrastination results from the interplay between expected utility, likelihood of success, delay, and impulsiveness. Another framework is the Self-Determination Theory, which correlates procrastination with motivation types—students motivated by intrinsic goals are less likely to procrastinate than those driven by external pressures. Additionally, the Ego Depletion Theory suggests that procrastination is a result of decision fatigue, where the ability to self-regulate diminishes over time, leading to task avoidance. Understanding these frameworks helps in addressing students' motivational challenges and improving academic behaviors .

The study of Grade 10 students' procrastination enriches the understanding of its impact on educational attainment by highlighting its role as both a hindrance and a potential, albeit rare, benefit. It provides insights into how foundational academic behaviors can affect long-term learning and performance outcomes. By focusing on a specific age group, this research underscores the developmental stages where intervention can be most effective, contributing to strategies aimed at mitigating procrastination's negative effects on learning processes, thereby enhancing overall educational attainment .

Academic procrastination inversely affects a student's self-efficacy, which is the belief in one's ability to succeed in specific tasks. Low self-efficacy can increase feelings of helplessness and reduce motivation to start or complete assignments, leading to more procrastination. This creates a negative feedback loop where procrastination leads to poorer task performance, reinforcing the student's belief in their lack of ability, ultimately diminishing academic performance and quality. The research has shown that procrastination is negatively correlated with self-efficacy, contributing to lower academic achievement and increased levels of distress .

Key challenges in studying procrastination in academic settings include the variability in students' reporting of procrastination, the subjective measurement of academic performance, and isolating procrastination from other academic influences. Overcoming these challenges involves utilizing mixed-method approaches for comprehensive data collection, ensuring diverse sampling to capture a range of procrastination behaviors, and employing longitudinal studies to track changes over time. Additionally, implementing rigorous statistical analyses and establishing clear operational definitions of procrastination can help isolate its specific effects on academic performance .

The research indicates that procrastination often results in decreased personal satisfaction in academic settings, primarily due to the stress and anxiety associated with last-minute work and unmet deadlines. While some students may initially feel relief by delaying tasks, the accumulated stress from pending responsibilities typically reduces overall satisfaction. This cycle can diminish students' enjoyment of learning and their sense of accomplishment. However, under specific conditions, such as low-pressure environments or when creativity is essential, procrastination might not negatively affect satisfaction levels, highlighting the nuanced relationship between procrastination and personal well-being in academic contexts .

External factors, particularly parenting practices, significantly influence a student's tendency to procrastinate and their academic outcomes. Parenting that is both demanding and responsive can motivate students to complete tasks promptly by fostering a supportive environment that encourages responsibility and discipline. Conversely, excessive pressure from parents might increase anxiety and avoidance behaviors in students, leading to procrastination. Studies showed that students with a supportive home environment have an internal locus of control, which can mitigate procrastination's negative impact on academic performance, whereas those experiencing higher pressure may procrastinate on significant tasks, negatively affecting their academic achievement .
