I ntroduction
For every CAT aspirant who has appeared for the exam, the knowledge of score,
percentile calculation matters. Once these are known, it is easier for them to check
out the colleges where they stand a chance of admission. This ebooks is a step in
that direction. Aimed at giving the details of what CAT scores are , calculation of

It is a known fact that CAT exam will be held in three sessions on a single day.
Therefore to ensure equality in marks considering the disparity in difficulty levels of
the sessions, the scores of candidates will be subjected to normalization. The scaled
scores will be converted to percentile for the shortlisting process. Before checking

What is CAT Percentile?

CAT percentile is a relative score that is used to determine the candidates' CAT 2022
performace and ranking. CAT percentile categorises a candidate on the basis of the rest of
the CAT takers scoring less than him/her. If a candidate secures the 99 percentile, that
means his or her performance was better than 99 percentile of all the CAT test takers that
year.

CAT 2022 - Normalization of Score

The first step after the CAT 2022 exam is CAT normalization . Why is it needed?
This is necessary so that there is no incongruity. The parameters on which
normalization is done are location, sessions, and the difficulty level of different exam papers.

All these criteria are equalized while scaling the raw score attained by the student.
Considering all these criteria, a normalized score is attained which is then used for the CAT
2022 percentile calculator. The CAT scaled scores for each of the three sections and the
total scores along with the percentile will be published on the scorecard.

How to Calculate CAT Percentile 2022?

The steps below sketch the procedure to calculate CAT 2022 percentile for a sectional as
well as an overall paper. Here the QA section is chosen as an example.
Step 1: The total number of candidates who appeared

First of all, note down the total number of candidates (say N) who appeared for the paper
both in the morning and afternoon sessions.
Step 2: Assigning rank ® based on the scaled score

After the normalization process, a scaled score is obtained for each section and the overall
scaled score. Based on the scaled score, you will be assigned a rank (r). In case two or
more candidates have attained the same marks in any section, they will be assigned the
same rank for that section.

Step 3: Calculation of percentile score

The formula for computing the percentile is given by

● P = Percentile of a candidate

● N = Total number of candidates

● R = Rank assigned to a candidate

Step 4: Round off

Round off the calculated CAT 2022 percentile score of a candidate up to two decimal points.
A similar strategy is followed for calculating CAT 2022 percentile score for the other two
sections, i.e. DILR and VARC in CAT 2022.

CAT Percentile Calculator - Explained with examples
In simple terms, the CAT percentile refers to the number of students who have scored below
him/her.

For example, there are a total number of 2,27,835 students who appeared in the CAT exam.
Now you scored a rank of 4000, then your CAT percentile will be:

● Your CAT percentile = [1 - { 4000/2,27,835 }] * 100 =

98.24 percentile

The above percentile means that 98 percent of the students writing the CAT exam shall
have a CAT score below you.

**CAT percentile is only calculated up to three decimal places, and then it is rounded off to
the next closest decimal number.

CAT Result 2022

IIM Bangalore will announce CAT 2022 result in the last week of January 2023. The result
of CAT exam mentions the name along with the biometric scanned photograph and details
of the candidates like sectional cutoff and the marks scored and the overall CAT 2022
percentile on the basis of their performance in the exam.
The scaled scores for each section Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC),
Quantitative Ability (QA), and Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) will be
mentioned. Also, the total scores along with the percentiles shall be stated on the scorecard.
Candidates who qualify will have to apply to their choice of college for admissions on the
basis of their CAT scores.

The IIMs will shortlist and call the candidate on the basis of IIM admission criteria . The
candidate has to convert the call by clearing the GD/PI and WAT process in order to finally
procure a seat in the top B-Schools.

 CAT Cutoff 2022
After the declaration of the CAT 2022 exam result, the authorities will release the expected
cutoff. The cutoff of CAT 2022 is nothing but the minimum CAT 2022 percentile a candidate
needs to secure in order to qualify for the next following round of the selection process. CAT
cutoff 2022 depends on various factors such as the difficulty level of the exam, the total
number of candidates appeared, the number of seats, etc.

In order to get shortlisted for the selection process: WAT -GD/PI, candidates appearing for
CAT 2022 exam must qualify the sectional as well as the overall cutoff. According to the past
year's trends, the CAT cutoff for top B-School category colleges like old IIMs and top B-
Schools such as FMS (University of Delhi), SPJIMR Mumbai, MDI Gurgaon, etc. goes over
99 percentile. Newer IIMs like IIM Sambalpur, IIM Trichy, IIM Kashipur, IIM Ranchi, etc. have
a cutoff of 90 percentile and above.

Final Selection for IIM Admission

On the basis of the composite score which is calculated on the basis of their performance in
CAT 2022, WAT/ GD, and PI, academic record, work experience, the candidates will get
