R-2R Ladder DAC Design and Testing

The document describes the design and testing of a digital to analog converter (DAC) using an R-2R ladder. The DAC uses an IC 7493 counter and IC 741 op-amp. As the counter output changes sequentially in response to a clock signal, the analog output varies in steps proportional to the reference voltage divided by 2 to the power of the number of bits. The circuit is assembled and the staircase output is observed to test the DAC.

11 DIGITAL TO ANALOG CONVERTER

Aim:

To design and test a DAC using R-2R ladder

Components Required:

IC 7493, IC 741,Resistors.

Principle:

The design of an R-2R ladder DAC is as shown. By the principle of superposition, the
output is proportional to the digital input. As the counter output changes sequentially, the
analog output vary in steps as shown. The height of each step would be Vref /2N-1 in this
case. So the output function will be

Yo=[ Vref /2N-1]( + + )

The counter of IC 7493 increments its count in each of the clock pulse.

Procedure:

Assemble the circuit as shown in figure. Feed the clock signal and observe the stair
case output in DAC

Viva questions:

1. What is/are advantages of R-2R DAC?

2. What is the output voltage level caused by the bit?

3. What is the typical values of R?
