4.1 General Maintenance of the Mast
• Ensure that all sliding contacts, stops and guides are kept free of
abrasive/corrosive/damaging substances such as tar or sand. Lubricate with clean grease
before each mast raising or lowering process.
• Closely monitor the condition of all latches. A latch that is fouled with sticky, gummy
material will interfere with the performance of moving parts. If a latch’s movement
becomes sluggish, it should be disassembled and cleaned when the mast is lowered.
Springs must be kept free of all foreign materials. Good quality thin grease should be
applied in adequate quantities.
• Inspect all wire ropes – operating lines, raising lines and load lines – for kinks, broken
wires or other damage. Ensure that all lines are correctly fitted into sheave grooves before
each raising or lowering operation.
• When raising or lowering the mast the engine should be running at idle speed.
• Do not attempt to repair or straighten bent or damaged load bearing parts or compression
members. Replace all such parts.
• Should it become necessary to attach accessories or other items to the mast, clamps
should be used. Never drill or burn holes and never weld on any member component of
the mast as this will reduce the strength of those members.
• Periodically inspect all welds for cracks, and repair if necessary.
• Lubrication of all raising and lowering mechanism equipment should be carried out on a
regular basis. Crown sheave bearings should be closely monitored and lubricated as
necessary. Frequency of lubrication will depend on operating environment and conditions.
• Use extreme caution when carrying out jarring operations under very low ambient
temperatures. Under such conditions, the mast’s capacity is greatly reduced. The operator
should determine how much load the mast can safely withstand before, during and after
jarring.
WARNING: Shock loads under conditions of very low temperatures can cause the
mast to fail. Extensive damage to equipment will result with the
possibility of serious injury to personnel.
