ACTIVITY 1
An Exercise to Illustrate the Principles,
Use and Precision of the Vernier Caliper Micrometer Caliper
Introduction:
Vernier caliper and micrometer caliper are precision measuring tools used to measure
distance and/or dimensions with high accuracy. Both are commonly used in fields like
engineering, manufacturing, science, etc. In this exercise we will be testing the use and
accuracy of both compared to one another, and as bonus to also compare it to the ruler.
Materials/Apparatus:
Object to measure
Ruler
Vernier caliper
Micrometer caliper
Paper and pen
Procedure:
1. Obtain all the materials necessary.
2. Use the ruler and measure the object as closely as you can
3. Next use the Vernier caliper
4. Put the object between its jaws and adjust the jaws so that both ends tightly hold the
object, then measure.
5. Next use the micrometer caliper
6. Ensure that the micrometer caliper is calibrated and clean before use. Close the anvil
and spindle so that they are touching. Then place the object to be measured between
the anvil and spindle. Next use the thimble or ratchet to turn the spindle until it makes
light contact with the object. Next use the thimble or ratchet to turn the spindle further
until it is snug against the object. Lastly read the measurement from the sleeves and
thimble scales.
Result and discussion:
Object Surfaces Ruler Vernier Micrometer
